The relative positions of the folded goods, the guide, and the presser-foot are somewhat diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 6, and from which. and the foregoing descriptionthe operation of the invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art and in which the vertical lines m indicate, approximately, the positions of the needles in the sewing operation.

Owing to the fact that the pivot-pin c of the foot-piece Z) is intermediate the ends of said foot-piece, the rise of the presser-i'oot shank a and of the guide 6 rigid therewith when cross-seams or other thick parts of the work pass beneath the presser-foot is about equal to the mean rise of the opposite ends of the foot-piece or about one-half of the rise of the toe portionof the said foot-piece, so that the said guide will always maintain such a proper relation to the bottom of the footpiece as will prevent lateral displacement of the work at all times.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A sewing-machine presser-foot comprising a shank, a foot portion pivoted thereto, and an edge-guide rigid with said shank and extending downward beneath the upturned toe portion of the said pivoted presser-foot between the outer sides of the latter.

2. A sewing-machine presser-foot comprising a shank, a foot portion pivoted thereto, and a guide rigid with said shank and extending downward beneath the upturned toe portion of the presser-foot, said guide being adjustably connected with said shank so that its working position may be varied.

3. A sewing-machine presser-foot comprising a shank, a foot portion pivoted thereto, a guide rigid with said shank and extending downward beneath the upturned toe portion of the said pivoted presser-foot between the outer sides thereof, and a spring bearing against said foot portion rearward of its pivot, so as to have a tendency to lift the said toe portion.

A sewing-machine presser-foot comprising a shank, a foot portion pivoted thereto, and an edge-guide rigid with said shank and extending downward beneath the upturned toe portion of the said pivoted presser-foot between the outer sides thereof, said toe portion being inclined, transversely of said foot, away from said guide.

5. A sewing-machine presser-foot compris-' ing the shank a, the foot 6 pivoted thereto, the guide 6 extending through and beneath the upturned toe portion of said foot and the right-angular shank f carrying the said guide 0 and rigidly attached to the said shank a.

A sewing-machine presser-foot comprising the shank a, the foot 6 pivoted thereto, the guide 6 extending beneath the upturned toe portion of said foot and the right-angular shank f carrying the said guide 6 and rigidly attached to the said shank a, said shank fhaving a slot h to permit its working position to be varied, and through which slot the setscrew 9 passes.

7. A sewing-machine presser-foot comprising a shank, a foot-piece pivoted to said shank at a point intermediate the ends of said footpiece, and a guide rigid with said shank and extending through and beneath the upturned toe portion of said pivoted foot-piece.

8. A sewing-machine presser-foot comprising a shank, a foot-piece pivoted to said shank at a point intermediate the ends of said footpiece, and a guide rigid with said shank and extending beneath the upturned toe portion of said foot-piece, said guide being adjustably connected with said shank so that its working position may be varied.
