To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW R. COBB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Shorthills, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Easel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates particularly to improvements in artists sketching-easels,the object being to provide an easel of strong yet light construction that may be compactly folded when not in use or for convenience in carrying about.

I will describe an easel embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of an easel Fig.- 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 shows the device as folded, and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of one of the easel members.

The device comprises astool having crossed pivotally-connected rear legs 1 and front legs 2, and on the upper ends of the legs are crossbars, to which the seat material 3 is attached. The stool, however, it may be here stated, is no part of the present invention, as the real invention resides in connection with the stool of the easel members or extension-pieces 4. The upper ends of the front legs 2, which when the stool is opened extend at a forward and upward incline, are provided with metal loops 5, which receive the lower ends of the extension-pieces 4, and they are limited in their downward movements by means of lugs 6, attached to said pieces and engaging with the upper ends of the legs. The extension-pieces 4 are provided with perforations 7 to receive pins 8 for supporting a sketching-board, canvas-stretcher, or the like, and this board or stretcher may be held at any desired angle by means of holding-arms 9, having hook ends 10 for engaging over the upper edge of the board or stretcher. These holding-arms are longitudinally slotted to receive bolts on the upper ends of the extension-pieces, and on these bolts are clamping thumb-nuts 11.

Figs. 1 and 2 show the position of parts when the easel is in use. When not in use, the stool may be folded and the extensionpieces 4 reversed and slid into the loops 5 and the hook ends .10 of the arms 9 engaged with pins 12 on the legs, and, if desired, the pins 8 may be passed through perforations in said extension-pieces into perforations in the legs.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent 1. An easel comprising a stool having pivotally-conneeted leg members, loops at the upper ends of thefront leg members, extensionpieces for engaging in said loops, and holding-arms adjustable on said extension-pieces.

2. An easel comprising a folding stool,loops on the upper ends of the front legs of said stool, extension-pieces adapted to engage in said loops, stops on said extension-pieces for engaging with the upper ends of the leg members, and means for holding a drawing-board or the like on said extension-pieces.

8. An easel comprisinga folding stool, loops on the upper ends of the front legs of said stool, extension-pieces adapted to engage their lower ends in said loops, stops for limiting the downward movement of the extensionpieces, said extension pieces having perforated pins for engaging in the perforations, longitudinally-slotted arms having hook ends, bolts passing from said extension-pieces into said slots, and clamping-nuts on said bolts.

4. An easel comprisingafolding stool, loop members on the legs of said stool, extensionpieces adapted to engage in said loops and to extend upward therefrom, the said pieces also being adapted to engage in said loops, and lie against the legs to which the loops are secured, and holding-arms adjustably mounted on said extension-pieces.
