NFEIERS, PNDTO LITHOGRAFMER WASH D. W. CUTTING, OF CAMBRIDGE, VERMONT.
Letters'Patent No. 79,212, dated June 23, 1868...
' IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-DRUMS.
fiilge fidgzlmls mime h! in tiger new; patent ant mating part at tht smut.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I
Be it known that I, D. W. CUTTING, of Cambridge, in the county of Lamoille, and in the State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating-Stoves; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the adjustability of the heating-drum or pipes, so that the degree of heat may be lessened or increased, as may be desired; and, also, in its movability, so that the drum or pipes may be taken out, if so desired.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construc tion and operation.
In the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, A represents a cooking, box, or other stove, and has one hole on each side, at the top, near its rear end, which holes or apertures have a rim or shoulder fitted into them, over which a sheet-iron cap may heplaced when the pipes are withdrawn from the stove. The elbows B B, extending through these holes on the side of the stove, are so fitted that they will easily turn in them. The other ends of the elbows B B are fitted into pipes C, extending towards the front of the stove. A
pipe may be attached to the end of one of the elbows, extending through the stove, so as to conduct the cold air from the outside, if desired. This cold air, passing through the pipes C, becomes heated, and may be conducted to any roomdesired by pipesattached to the end of the other elbow. The rod a, running through the stove transversely over the pipes, is bent in the centre, so as to hook on to the wire hook I: on the pipes, and serves to raise or lower the pipes by turning either backwards or forwards. By this arrangement, the degree of heat communicated can be regulated at will. When it is desired to remove the pipes, turn the wire rod a, so that the end will be behind the little float on the outside of the stove. This will let the end of the pipes 0 next to the front door drop. Then detach this wire rod, on the inside/from the hook b on the pipes to which it is attached, and the pipes C may be drawn forward through the front door, as they are fitted to slip readily into the elbows inside, and cannot get out until they are lowered. One of the elbows isthon moved further out, through the hole in the side of the stove, to give room, so that the other elbow may be taken out from the inside through the front door. The first-namcd elbow will then be taken out in the same manner. The sheet-iron caps are then placedover the rims or shoulders in the holes or apertures through the sides of the stove.
By this it will be easily seen how thc'pipcs and elbows are put in the stove.
A drum may be substituted for the pipes C, which drum must then have two holes, to admit the ends of the elbows B B inside the stove, and it is raised and lowered by the same means, and for the same purpose, as the pipes, and may be drawn forward and backward by a rod running from the top of the drum through the front of the stove. The pipes or drum may be raised or lowered by the device described, or any other suitable device.
Any suitable device may be used for securing the drum in the stove at the required distance from the fire.
I am aware that a heating-drum capable of being moved and adjusted within the stove is not now.
What I claim is- The arrangement of the drum C over the lire-box of a cooking or box-stove, when said drum is provided with an opening near each side, from which project two pipes B B, that lie parallel to each other in the stove, and are provided with elbows, that pass through openings in the side of the stove, opposite to each other, for receiving and transmitting air, as and for the purposcsset forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this 29th day of April, 1868.
V D. W. CUTTING. a 5.
