Be it known that we, LAYTON EUGENE ORoE and FEED L. MILLER, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimneys or Stacks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in chimneys or stacks. The objects of this invention are, first, to provide an improved chimney or stack which is practically fireproof and also an effective ventilator; second, to provide an improved chimney or stack having the advantages above stated in which the parts are economical toproduce and quickly and economically assembled.

Further objects and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the v detailed description to follow.

We accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.

The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.

A structure embodying the features of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a detail side elevation view of a structure embodying the features of our in-- vention, portions of a building being illustrated in section to show the relation of the parts. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional view taken on a line corresponding to line 2 2 of Fig. 1. In the drawings the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section-lines, and similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings, our improved chimney or stack is made up of an outer or exterior wall and an interior wall forming the smoke-flue. The exterior wall is of such size that when the interior wallor smoke-flue is placed within air passages or chambers are formed about the same within the exterior wall. The outer or exterior wall is made up of rectangular tile-like blocks of artificial These blocks are preferably made of suitable Portland-cement com position. These exterior-wall blocks are secured together and their joints sealed by laying them in cement, so that when a chimney is constructed itis, in effect, one continuous artificial-stone wall.

The exterior wall of the chimney is made up mainly of the plain rectangular hollow blocks A.

The outer-wall sections are provided with oppositely-arranged inwardly-facing curved seats 8, adapted to receive the tubular sections D, of which the inner wall or smoke-flue is made up. These sections D are also preferably made of a suitable artificial stone or concrete.

Cap and base pieces-B are provided. These cap and base pieces have. central openings 6 therethrough and inwardly-extending projections 6. These projections b are conformed to fit within the outer wall and about the inner wall, thus firmly securing the parts in position and sealing the ends of the air passages or chambers about the smoke-flue. I The cap and base pieces are identical in form, so that they may be formed in thesame mold. In constructing a chimney or stack the base-piece is placed in an inverted position upon the chimney-foundation, as C. This foundation may be made of masonry, as illustrated, or of concrete, as may be desired. The foundation (l is provided with a suitable chamber to receive the clean-out receptacle C. (See Fig. 2.)

The sections forming the outer and inner walls are arranged so that they overlap or break joints, thus adding to the strength of the chimney and also assisting in centering the sections as they are laid. The sections forming the outer wall are corrugated upon one edge, as clearly appears in Fig. 3, to better hold the cement in laying them.

The sections of the inner wall or smoke-flue are each provided with an annular mortise, having a curved bottom on one end and a corresponding tenon having its end curved on the other end. This particular shape of mortise and tenon aids in adjusting the sections in laying them, as the wet cement can be readily worked out of the mortise by turning or rotating the section which is being laid.

The sections D of the inner wall of the smoke-flue fit within the seats 8 in the outer- Wall sections, so that both the inner and outer wall sections are centered, as described. Thus arranged air passages or chambers are formed in the chimney,which practically surround the smoke-flue. With the cap-piece in position, the upper ends of these passages are covered. (See Fig. 5.)

Laterally-opening outlets a are provided for the air-passages. These outlets are formed by forming notches in adjoining edges of a pair of outer-wall sections. Thus formed the sections are not materially weakened in forming the openings therethrough.

The sections A may be formed in the same mold, the top section being placed in an inverted position.

The sections A, having a combined pipe and ventilator opening therein, are provided. (SeeFigs. 1 and 4:.) This combined pipe and ventilator opening consists of a ring a, which is east in the body of the wall-section, and a face-plate (4", having a central opening therethrough adapted to receive the Stovepipe. A plurality of ventilator-openings communicating with the air-passages of the chimney are grouped about the Stovepipe-openings.

An inner wall or flue section D, having a pipe-opening d therein, adapted to register with the pipe-opening in the face-plate a, is provided.

A section A, having a ventilator a cast therein, is provided. This section is preferably located adjacent to the floor of the room. (See Fig. 1.)

When it is desired to connect a furnace to the chimney, a section A, having a ring-like thimble 0;"'' east therein, is provided, and the inner wall or flue section is provided with a suitable pipe opening adapted to register therewith, as clearly appears in Fig. 2. This ring or thimble a is provided with an outwardly-projecting lug f, through which the thumb-screw f is arranged, by means of which the pipe may be secured in the thimble.

With the parts arranged as illustrated and described we secure a chimney which is practically fireproof and is also a very effective ventilator. The air and ventilator passages are sufiiciently heated by the smoke-flue to insure the circulation thereof.

The parts of our improved chimney or stack are simple and economical to produce and very economical to assemble in constructing a chimney.

The combination thimble and ventilator is very desirable in use in kitchens and the like, as it is so arranged as to carry away the vapors arising from cooking, although it is of advantage in other relations.

We have illustrated and described our improved chimney or stack in detail in the form preferred by us on account of the simplicity and economy of constructions of its parts and the ease and economy of assembling them in constructing a chimney, although we are aware that it is capable of considerable structural variation without departing from our invention.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a chimney or stack, the combination of an exterior wall made up of rectangular sections having oppositely-arranged inwardlyfacing curved seats therein; an inner wall or smoke-flue made up of tubular sections arranged. in seats in said outer-wall sections, said inner and outer wall sections being arranged to overlap or break joints; a foundation having a clean-out chamber therein; cap and base pieces for said walls having central openings therethrough, and inwardly-projecting portions conformed to fit within said outer wall and about said inner wall or smoke-flue; outlet-openings through the sides of said outer wall toward the top, formed by notching the edges of twoadjoining sections; an outer-wall section having an opening with a combined thimble and ventilator arranged therein; an innerwall section having a pipe opening adapted to register with said thimble; and an outer-wall section having a ventilator-opening therein, for the purpose specified.

2. In a chimney or stack, the combination of an exterior wall made up of rectangular sections, having oppositely-arranged inwardlycurved seats therein; an inner wall or smokeflue made up of tubular sections, said inner and outer wall sections being arranged to overlap or break joints; a foundation having a clean-out chamber therein; cap and base pieces for said'walls havingcentral openings therethrough, and inwardly-projecting portions conformed to fit within said outer wall and about said inner wall or smoke-flue; outlet-openings through the sides of said outer wall toward the top, formed by notching the edges of two adjoining sections; and an outerwall section having a ventilator-opening therein, for the purpose specified.

In a chimney-or stack, the combination of an exterior wall made up of sections having inwardly-facing curved seats therein; an inner wall or smoke-flue made up of tubular sections arranged in said seats in said outer-wall sections, said inner and outer wall sections being arranged to overlap or break joints; a foundation having a clean-out chamber therein; a base-piece for said Walls having a central opening therethrough, and inwardly-projecting portions conformed to fit within said outer wall and about said inner wall or smoke flue; suitable pipe-openings .in said walls; and a ventilating-opening in said outer wall, for the purpose specified.

In a chimney or stack, the combination of an exterior wall made up-of sections having inwardly-facing curved seats therein; an inner wall or smoke-flue made up of tubular sections arranged in said seats in said outer-wall sections; a foundation having a clean-out chamber therein; a base-piece for said walls having a central opening therethrough, and inwardlyprojecting portions conformed to fit within said outer wall and about said inner wall or smoke-flue; suitable pipe-openings in said walls; and a ventilating-opening in said outer Wall, for the purpose specified.

25. In a chimney or stack, the combination ofthe exterior wall having inwardly-facing curved seats therein; an inner wall or smokeflue, arranged in said seats, the portion inclosed in said outer Wall about said smokeflue forming ventilating passages; outletopenings for said ventilating-passages toward the top of said chimney; and an opening in said outer wall with a combined thimble and ventilator arranged therein, for the purpose specified.

26. In a chimney or stack, the combination of an exterior Wall having inwardly-facing curved seats therein; an inner wall or smokeflue arranged in said seats, the portions inclosed by said outer wall about said smokefiue forming ventilating-passages; and suitable ventilating-openings for said Walls, for the purpose specified. r
