T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: 'Be it known that I, Grmun JosLm, of Boston, l invented certain new andfnsefnl I'mproyements in`Elevutors and I do hereby declare tho-follouing toben fu-ll and exact description thereof, reference being` had to the accompanying. drawings, 'and to the letters of Areference` marked thereon'.
'To enable others skilled' in the art to' make and use roy-invention, I will proceed to describe its nature,`
construction, and use.
The nature of my invention consists- First, in hanging a series of buckets or carriages upon two endless 'chains orbands, said chains Qnbands so arranged audcon structed that the'cariages pass or swigbetweenthe sprocket-wheels', Second, Vin vso enclosing the endless chain or'band within grooves, eannotfall, sinceit completely fills the channel in which it runs.'
Third, in arranging a.guido near .the top of the elevator 'to ass swinging between the upper sprocket-wheels, as it passes from the ascending to the descending well-room.
-Fourth, in bevelling the bottom ofthe carriage so that 'Ait may, in combination with the partition beturcen the ascending and descending we'1l-room ,\assist in'guiding'itsel-f into thedescending Wcll-room. Fifth, in arranging, in that part oljtbe door that forms the edge of the ascending nell-rooms, anarr'ow trap* door, which-may open upward, in case,"l rom carelessness or accident, any part of the person of the passenger extends outvrard beyond thc well-room suflioicntly far'to comein contact 'with it, the said door.V

Drawings.
Figure 1 shows, in part elevation and part section, my improved elevator,
Figure 2 shows in. elevation the upper sprocket-wheels, their hangings, the chaiinbands with theconneetngbar, end one of the bucketsor carriages hung thereto. l Figure 8 Shows a part of one of the sprockctvheels and chain, and also in 'elevation andsec'tion the boxor 'channel in which the chain or band r'uns. l
'The sprocket-wheels D D', ig. 2, are provided'with teeth or sprockets, meshaecurately with them. The form of the teeth or ofthe links may be being essential that the links of the chain or corrugations of a rope, fectly with the teeth or corrngationsot` the sprocketwheels..
The'sprocket-wheels are suspended to the hangers, by short pins -R Rf, the hangerslenly tothe innersurfaceof the sprocket-wheels, and n'ot across the space between the wheels is open-and freefor the passage of the buckets.
The chains H H', iig. 2, are connect'edat intervals by rods, one of "which, N, is shovrnings. and 2i so that the links of the chninH may varied to suit circumstances, it only ig 2, which extend inwardly from -Upon each vof these rods n carriage or bucket,O O 0"', is hung.
In iig.' 1, one of the carriages, 0, is represented as having just cleared the partition V, between theascend'- ing well-room W andthe descending wel1-room W', and as'pussing between the sprocket-Wheels, while the-chains H Hl', iig. 2, which carry it, are passing ove-r the sprocket-wheels.
S, g. 1, is a' guide, which, bearing against the inclined upper endl of the carriage, Acarriage in a vertical position in case it should be unevcnly loaded. A,
The incline a' b', at the bottom of the carriage, bearing against the partition V, also serves to keep the carriage erect.' The incline ab, .on the bottom of the carriage, is .to prevent the carriage, in its descent, from striking 'on the partition V- vrvhen it begins to descend.
pieces K K'. As this chain is always The chainor-band H iits'nicelyin a groove, I i, 3, formed bythe it would not fnll,^in 'caso it should break, as 'the sides of tho 'groove would tu' support for the rod N.

stjn keeping the carriage verticnl,-while' `supposing a rope is used, shall agree pera from one, wheel tc another, so that' serves to keep the By this arrangement, that is, confining the chain within a groove, I avoid the great danger attendant upon chain or rope elevators. l
The pair of lower sprocket-wheels are not shown, but arelidentical in construction with the upper ones, and may revolveon short pins, similar to It R,'g. 2, or both sprocket-wheels may be hung or. a single shaft, since thebuckets or carriages hang entirely below the axis of the lower wheels, as they pass from one well-room to the other.
My elevator is actuated by the pinionlA` operating on the large gear C, or by any convenient actuatingdevice.
Xis a'narrow trap-'door on the verge of the ascending well-room, so arranged that, incase, from accident or carelessness, any part* of the person of the passenger projects outward beyond the well-room4 sufficiently t-'ar vto come in contact with the door, it will open upward',thus preventing injury to thel passenger.
Having thus described4 my invention, what I claimus my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is- I y l 1. The arrangement of the upper sprocket-wheels and independent journals, leaving' the space between the two wheels openfor the passageoi` the carriages, substantially as described, and'for the purpose set forth. i
2.' The guide S, operating in combinationjvith the carriage, v.substantially as described, and'for the purpose set forth.
3.' Bevalling the bottom of a chainelevator carriage and arranging the top of the partition'V, substantially as described, and for the purpose setforth. Y
4. The narrow trap-door arranged and tv orlring substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
.5. 'The endless chain or band enclosed within guides, substantially as described, and forthe purpose set forth.
