Description

No. 791,203. I
I UNITED." STATES Patented May 30, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
STACEY J'. OFFORD, OF HELENA, MONTANA.
STRAP-LCQKING' VDEV-IYOYE.
SPECIFICATION aim part of Letters Patent No. 791,203, dated May 30, 1905.
. Application fi1ed Apri 1 28,:1QO4. SerialNo.205,377:
To all w hojm may concern.- I g Be it known that I, STACEY J. ,OFF'ORD, a citi,
zen of the United States, residing at'I-Ielena,
of. Montana, have invented'a new and useful Strap-Locking Device, of whichthe following is a specification. s o
This invention relates to strap-locking devices, and has for its principal object to provide a locking device having means for permanent securement to one end of the strap, the lock being provided with a pivoted shackle that partly encircles the tongue end of the strap, suitable means being employedfor entering an opening or passage in the tongue end of said strap in order to firmly lock the sameand prevent release of the strap until the lock is opened and the shackle thrown back.
A further object of the invention is to pro. vide a lock-casing having means for attachment to a strap at a point adjacent to its buckle and provided with a pivoted shackle portions, size, and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages .of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a strap-lock constructed in accordance with the invention, the tongue or billet of the strap being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating a slight modification of the invention. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showing one of the preferred forms of construction. Fig. 4c is a similar view illustrating a modified construction of strap and locking-yoke. Fig. 5 illustrates in perspective a still further modifica- 'to indicate corresponding .parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In carrying out the invention a padlock 10,
having a pivotally-mounted shackle 11, is employed. The padlock is in the form of a casing having means at one end ,for pivotally connecting it to one end of the shackle and provided with an opening for the entrance of the opposite end of said shackle. The casing contains any suitable form of locking mechanism to be actuated by a key or spring.
The casing is provided with means for per manent securement to one end of the strap, and Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate one form of simpleloop or eye that is formed integral with the lower portion of the casing. The tongue or billet 15 of the strap 14: is provided, as
, usual, with a number of openings 16, and when the shackle has been thrown back to open position the'strap is drawn taut, and then the shackle is moved down to the position shown in Fig. 1 until the pin 13, carried by the shackle, enters one of the openings 16, and
after the free end of the shackle has entered in the opening of the casing and been locked within thesame the strap cannot be released until the key is turned in the lock.
In'the modified construction illustrated in Fig. 2 the locking-pin 23 projects from the lock casing, and this forms a convenient structure in that it permits the ready adjustment of the strap and the passing of the pin into one of the strap-openings before the shackle is moved down to confine the strap in place.
In the construction illustrated in Fig. 3 the lock-casing is provided with an extended arm able opening in the casing and is locked there- 1 In this instance the shackle is provided with the'locking-pin 13, and the device as a whole is placed immediately to the rear of an ordinary form of buckle 18 and serves as an auxiliary locking means to prevent unbuckling of the strap. w
The construction shown in Fig. 4; illustrates a pivotally-mounted shackle that is provided 100 with a pair of projecting lugs or shoulders 19 and 20, that are arranged to enter notches 22 21, formed, respectively, in the opposite edges of the tongue or belt of the strap.
Fig. 5 illustrates a further modification of the invention, in which the lock-casing 10 is attached bodilyto the strap 14 at a point adjacent to the buckle 18, as by rivets 24:. The shackle 11 in this case is of the resilient instead of the pivot form previously described, and the keyhole 25 is arranged to one side of the center of the lock-casing, so that it may be accessible when the strap is locked.
It will be observed that in all of the constructions shown the strap is encircled by two members, one of which is the lock-casing or a permanent part thereof and the otherthe shackle.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a strap-locking device, a strap having an opening in its tongue or billet end, a lock formed of a pair of tongue-end-encircling members one of which is a pivoted shackle, a casing having an opening for the passage of one end of the shackle, a shacklclocking means within the casing, and means carried by one of said members for entering said strap-opening, movement of the shackle to open position leaving the tongue end of the strap free for removal and adjustment.
2. In combination, a strap having at one end a buckle, the opposite end of the strap being provided with openings, a padlock, an arm projecting from the casing of the padlock, means for securing said arm to the strap at a point adjacent to the buckle, a shackle pivotally connected to said arm, and a strapengaging pin projecting from said shackle.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixcd my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
STACEY J. OFFORD.
