Description

@hitch tetes stent @fitte BERNARDBAVAN'AGH, or NEW Yoann. v.A
Letters Patent No. 79,117, dated June 23. 1868; antedated June 13, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH=BASIN OVERFLOW AND DISCHARGE-PRES.
ro AL'L WHoM -Ir MAY coneau-N; y
Be it known that I, BERNARD HAVANAGH, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and
v applied to use, a certain new and useful Improvement in Setting'Wash-Basins; and'I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing; making pnrt oi this speoiication, whereinu Figure 1 is a vertical section et said basin and its attachments, and
Figure 2 is a sectional plan at the line :z: x.
Similar marksof reference denote the s athe parts. A
My invention is intended to remove the risk of injury to buildings resulting from leakage of the couplings and connections of basins, and at the same time facilitate repair. l 4
I make use of a metallic drip-pan beneath the basin, in which is formed a trap for the waste-pipe, and I support the basin upon a hollow` screw that forms the -vertical Weste-pipe, so that risk of leakage is prevented, nnd-the fitting up of theplumbing-work is greatly facilitated. l
InV the drawing, a represents e slab of marble or other material; b and o are the basincocks for hot and cold water ot" any usual character.
d is my metallic drip-pan, which I prefer to have made of cast iron. The pipes that supply water to the cocks b and c'pass up through thimbles or raised projections in the said pan d, and are packed with'putty or 'suitable cement, so that any leakage, consequent upon the coupling of either cock becoming loose, the water is received by this pan d. p
This pan d is set upon the tioor or any suitablesupport, and is formed -with a box; e, that is on the under side of said pan, and communicates to the sewer-pipef, and acts as a trap to excludesmell, the cylindrical projcction 2 reaching to the surface of the water that remains in the box e.
The cylinder 3 rises above the pan d, and is provided with an interior thread that receives the screw of the tubular lcolumn g, at the upper end of which is a ring-seat, 4, for the basin 5, and iis a hollowv arm from the column g to the overflowhorn 6 of the basin 5.
It will now be understood that when the column g is screwed down into the box e, the basincan be placed on the ring-seat 4, yvithsuitable packing at the `iunction of -the parts, the horn 6 entering the arm Z, and the two are rotated until the upper edge of the basin is firmly pressed against the under side of the slab, putty or other suitable cement being employed at this point to make a tight joint,
This construction allows for the introduction or removal of basins with facility, and any leakage cannot fail to be taken by the drip-pan d, and from that be conveyed to the sewer by a pipe, m. This pipe m should be connected to the main sewer-pipe to avoid' the risk of an overflow if'the pipefshould become stopped at some distance from the drip-pan d, but, if desired, this pipe nnmight connect directly to the pipef, as shown by dotted' lines, sg. 2.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The trape and pipefbeloiv the drip-pan cl,'in combination with the hollow column g, supporting the basin,
and arranged to receive its discharge and overiiow, as and for the purposes set forth.
Dated October 14, A. D. 1867. y
