TOOL-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,590, dated May 23, 1905.
Application filed June 13,1904. Serial No. 212,309.
To (tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we,WILLIAn R. REYNOLDS and JOSEPH R. GORDON, citizens of the United States, residing. at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool- Handles, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tool-handles; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is designed for use in connection with a screw-driver, ice-pick, chisel, or any other similar tool having a shank adapted to be inserted longitudinally into the handle, a further object being to provide a tool-handle of this class whereby the tool may be locked in the handle or securely held therein; and With these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1' is a central longitudinal section of a tool-handle made according to our invention and showing an ordinary screw-driver connected therewith; Fig. 2, atransverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a section, on a larger scale, on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a section similar to Fig. 1, but showing only the locking devices by which the tool is held in the handle; and Fig. 5, a side view of one part of the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 4:-
In the drawings forming part of this specification we have shown at (Z an ordinary screwdriver having a shank adapted to be inserted into a handle, and in the practice of our invention we provide a handle Z for tools of this class which is of the following construction: The handle Z) is provided with a longitudinal bore 6 and that end of the handle Z) into which is passed the shank of the tool (Z is provided with a metal sleeve 0, having at its outer end an inwardly-directed annular flange or rim 0 and within the sleeve 0 is placed a circular plate (Z, which is secured in position either to the handle bor to the sleeve 0 and is provided with a hub (Z in which is formed an eccentric opening d", which also extends through the plate (Z.
Mounted on the hub (Z of the plate (Z is a cap 0, having a circular opening 0 which receives the hub (Z 2 of the plate (Z, and the circular opening 6 is formed eccentrically in the cap 6, and said cap is provided with a hub which passes through the flange or rim 0 of the sleeve 0 and is provided with an annular milled head f, which is rigidly secured thereto in any desired manner. From this construction it will be seen that by turning the cap 6 in either direction the central bore 0* through the hub 6 may be made eccentric to the central bore of the hub (Z of the plate (Z, and this will cause said hub c to grasp and securely hold the shank of the tool (Z.
We also secure in the outer end of the handle 6 a steel block 9, the inner endof which is provided, in the form of construction shown, with a reduced portion 9 and a further reduced portion and mounted on the reduced portions g and g of the block 9 is a sleeve it, and said block g is provided in the inner end thereof with a transverse recess 9, and the shank of the tool (Z is provided with a corresponding extension (63, adapted to enter said recess. The object of reducing the inner end of the block 9, as shown at and 9 is to facilitate the forming of the recess g* therein; but this construction is not absolutely essential, and said recess may be formed in any desired manner, one of the objects of the block 9 being to form an inner bearing for the end of the shank of the tool, so that a hammer may be used in connection with the end of the handle, which is frequently necessary with tools of this class, and the block 9 also prevents the hammer from splitting or otherwise injuring the handle.
It will be understood that the bearing of the shank (Z2 of the tool at the inner end of said shank is such as to prevent the handle from turning on the tool or on the shank thereof,
and no amount of wrench or twist in the operation of the device will turn the handle on the tool. The lock composed of the parts (Z and d and e and e also serves to an extent to prevent the handle from turning on the tool, and this look also prevents the movement of the tool longitudinally of the handle.
It will be apparent that handles made in this manner may be applied to a large number of tools having shanks adapted to be inserted into the handle, and any suitable material may be used in the construction of the handle.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A tool-handle adapted for use in connection with a tool having a shank adapted to be inserted longitudinally thereinto, said handle being provided at the end into which the shank is inserted with a sleeve having an inwardlydirected flange or rim at its outer end, a hub secured in said sleeve and provided with an eccentric opening through which the shank of the tool passes, a cap mounted on said hub and adapted to turn thereon and the opening therein in which the hub fits being also formed eccentrically in said cap, said cap being provided with an outwardly-directed hub which passes through the flange of the sleeve and is provided with a head by which said cap may be turned, substantially as shown and described.
2. A tool-handle adapted for use in connection with a tool having a shank adapted to be inserted longitudinally thereinto, said handle being provided at the end into which the shank is inserted with a sleeve having an inwardlydirected flange or rim at its outer end, a hub secured in said sleeve and provided with an eccentric opening through which the shank of the tool passes, a cap mounted on said hub and adapted to turn thereon and the opening therein in which the hub fits being also formed eccentrically in said cap, said cap being provided with an outwardly-directed hub which passes through the flange of the sleeve and is provided with a head by which said cap may be turned, and the end of the handle opposite said sleeve being provided with a metal
