PATENT OFFICE.
ROLLA MOUNT, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO GEORGE S. OOX AND ONE-FOURTH TO ALICE MAGNER, OF ST. LOUIS,
MISSOURI.
COLLAR-FASTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,380, dated May 23, 1905.
Application filed May 19 1904. Renewed March 2'7, 1905. Serial No. 252.264.-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that-I, RoLLA MOUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, in theState of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Collar-Fas tening Device, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a device for fastening apparel-collars, and is more particularly adapted for use with tall turned-over collars.
In collars of the kind above mentioned it is desirable that the upperedges of the flaps be held closely together, so that the collar will present a neat appearance. Owing, however, to the distance of the upper edges of the flap from the buttonholes, they are very easily separated by pressure upon the upper edge of the collar when the collar is only fastened by the collar-button in the usual way.
One of the principal objects of my invention is to provide a device which will eifectively hold the upper edges of the flaps in proximity.
Another object of my invention is to reduce the wear upon the buttonholes of the collar.
In the accompanyin drawings, which illustrate one form of col ar-fasteningdevice made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a front view, on a reduced scale, showing the fastening device applied to a collar, parts of the collar bein broken away. Fig. 2 is a'front elevation of the fastening device alone. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Like marks of reference refer to similar parts in the similar views of the drawings.
The fastening device is formed by a strip of sheet metal 10. This strip of metal has formed at one end a hook 11, adapted to engage with the lower edge of the inner or short.
.the buttonhole of the end 12 of the collarband. It will be evident that through the medium of the loop 13 and the collar-button 14 the fastener is enabled to engage with the inner or shorter end 12 of the collar-band intermediate of its height. At the opposite end of plate 10 from the hook 11 is a second hook 15, which is adapted to engage with the under edge of the outer or long end 16 of the collar-band. Adjacent to the hook 15 the plate 10 is provided with an upturned portion 17, adapted to embrace the lower edge of the outer end 16 of the collar-band. This upturned portion 17 is provided with lugs 18, in which is pivoted a detent or locking device 19, provided with a finger-piece 20. The upper edge of the upturned portion 17 may be flared at 21, as shown in Fig. 4,-so as to allow for the more ready insertion of the edge'of the end 16 of the collar-band, and theentire plate 10 is preferably somewhat curved, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to correspond with the curvature of thecollar. 22 (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1) represents the flaps of the collar.
In using my device the collar is fastened at the back in the usual way, and the inner or short end 12 of the collar-band is placed over the usual collar-button 14, passing through the collar-band of the shirt. The hook 11 is now placed around the under edge and the recess 13 brought into engagement with the shank of the collar-button 14. The
' long or outer end 16 of the collar-band 16 is now placed between the upturned portion 17 and the body of the plate 10. This will also cause the hook 15 to engage with the lower end of the band. The end of the band is then passed between the short end 12 and its corresponding flap 22 andslidin until the two flaps of the collar are brought together at their upper parts, as indicated in Fig. 1. The finger-piece is now operated to bring the detent or locking device 19 into engagement with the collar. The collar will now be locked firmly in place, and it will be unnecessary to pass the collar-button 14 through the buttonhole of the outer flap 16, as the collar will be firmly held in placeby the-locking device.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-' 1. A collar-fastening device consisting of a body portion adapted to lie between the ends of the collar and engage one end thereof at a point intermediate of its height, an upwardly and rearwardly turned member for engaging the lower edge of the inner end of the band of the collar, and an upwardly and outwardly turned member for engaging the lower edge of the outer end of said band.
2. A collar-fastening device consisting of a body portion adapted to lie between the ends of the collar and engage one end thereof at a point intermediate of its height, an upwardly and rearwardly turned member for engaging the lower edge of the inner end of the band, an upwardly and forwardly turned member for engaging the lower edge of the outer end of the band, and locking means carried by one of said members for positively locking the collar.
3. A collar-fastening device consisting of a body portion adapted to lie between the ends of the collar, said body portion being provided with a loop for engaging the collarbutton, and upwardly and rearwardly turned member for engaging the lower edge of the inner end of the band of the collar, and an upwardly and forwardly turned member for engaging the lower edge of the outer end of the band.
4. A collarfastening device consisting of a body portion adapted to lie between the ends of the collar, said body portion being provided with a loop for engaging the collarbutton, an upwardly and rearwardly turned member for engaging the lower edge of the inner end of the band, an upwardly and forwardly turned member for engaging the lower edge of the outer end of the band, and locking means carried by one of said members for positively fastening the collar.
5. A collar-fastening device provided with means for engaging the lower edge of the inner end of the band of the collar, means for engaging with the said inner end, at a point intermediate of its height, and with a locking device for engaging with the outer end of said band.
6. A collar-fastening device provided with a hook for engaging the lower edge of the inner end of a collar-band, a recess for engaging a collar-button in said inner end, and a locking device for engaging the outer end of said band.
7. A collar-fastening device provided with a hook for engaging the lower edge of the inner end of a collar-band, a recess for engag ing a collar-button in said inner end, a locking device for engaging the outer end of said band, and a hook for engaging the lower edge of said outer end.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal in the presence of the two subscribing witnesses.
