TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONURN:
Be it knownlthat I,`E. H. RIPLELAof North Chelmsford,4in the'countyvofMiddlesex, and State of Massachusctts, have `invented a new and useful Improvement in MouldingMaehine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a'full, clear, and exact'description thereof, which will enable those skilled in theK art to 'make and use the same, reference being had to theI accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-` Figure 1 is aside view of my improvedmachine, partly in section, to show the construction. Figure 2 is a detail view of the eccentric rocking-plate or frame. Y l Figure 3 is a top view' of my improved4 machine, part broken away, to show the construction. Figure 4 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the line `:c x', iig. 3. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. My invention has for its object to furnish a neat, simple, and effective machine for forming mouldings, which shall be so constructed and arranged that by very simple adjustments the same cutter may be used for cutting mouldings of many different designs.
, And it consists in the construction and 'combination of the various parts, as hereinafter more fully described.
A are the end-frames of the machine. Y B is thel horizontal frame, the ends of which are attached-to the middle parts of the end-frames A. `C is the top plate or table of the machine. l
D is the cone-pulley, by means of which 4motion is communicatedto'the machine, and which revolves upon a jour-nal attached to the outer side of one of the-end-fram'es A.
E is a small gear-wheel, attached to, orconnected with the cone-pulleyD in such a way 'as to be carried-.with
said cone-pulley in its revolution.
YF is a gear-wheel attached to the end of the shaft G, and the teeth of which mesh into the teeth of the gear-wheelE.
The shaft G revolves in bearings attached to the frames A and B, and to its innerend is attached a gearwheel, H, the teeth4 of which meshinto `the teethfof the gear-wheel I, attaehedto the cam-shaft J.l

To the inner end of the shaft J are `attached'two cams, O and l?, which operate the levers Q and R. I. The lever Q is p'ivoted to a standard, S, attached to the frame B,'a\nd one of its ends rests upon the can; O, so as to be operated by the movementof saidcam.
The outer end ofthe lever Q isfcurved, as shown iufig. 1, so that the cam P mayrevolve without touching the lever Q.
From the extreme end of the lever Q is suspended a weight, .l, :to bring the level' .Q .bwk t0 its Place when released from the cam 0. l
To the inner end of the lever Q is'pivoted the lower end of the connecting-rod the upper end ofwhich` is pivoted to the side or edge of the pivot'ed frame or plate V, or to an arm .projecting from sald plate or frame.'
The rod U, I prefer. to make in tworparts, having a right and left screw-thread cut upon'their adjacent ends,
which enter the opposite ends of the hand-nut W, so that by turning the said hand-nut the said ends'of the said parts may be moved closer together or farther apart., to adjust the length of the said rod U as may be required.
The lever Ris suspended from audpivoted to the head of the screw-bolt X, which passes up through a hole in the frameB, and has hand-nut, Y, screwed upon. its upper end, so that it may be adjusted as required.
To one end of the lever R is pivoted thelower end of the rod Z, which passes up through a guide into4 such a position thatv its upper end mayrest against the 'cam P, so that the lever R may heoperated ,bythe movement of the said cam P; i
To theother end of the lever R is pivoted a short rod, A', having a. socket formed in its upper end, and
which is held in a vertical position, and made to move up and down in a vertical line, by the cross-bar B',-
'facce 2 through which it passes, land which is kept in proper position by the guide-pins C', which pass through its ends, and which are attached to theframe B, as shown in tig. 4. i'
D'- is a vertical shaft, the lower end of which enters yand works in the socket A'.
The vertical shaft D' passes up through the-collar E', and to its-upper end s attachedthe plate F'.
The collar E is pivoted to the plate or frame V by two set-screws, G', which pass longitudinally through the middle part of the frame or plate V, in the same vertical planewith the pivoting-.points of said frame, but at a higher level than said pivoting-points, so that the frame may rock upon the said collar.
The ends of the frame or plate V arel curved downwards, as shown in figs. 2 and 4, and are pivoted to arm-s H', attached to the under side of. the table C, so that, as the said plate or frame V is rocked upon its pivotingpoints, the upper end of the vertical shaftvD' may be .moved forward or back.-
To the rear-edge of 'thc plate F' is pivoted or hinged the lower edge ofthe plate or frame I', the upper edge of which is rigidly attached to the rear edge of the feed-box J.
To vthe forward edge of the plate F' is pivoted the lowerk end of a. curved guide-rod, K', which passes up through va hole in the forward part of the`feed-box J', or in a guide-block, L', rigidly attached to the forward edge of said feed-box.
This construction allows the-feedbox' to bc tilted or adjusted at 'any desired angle with theplate F'.
When adjusted, the feedlbox J' is secured in place by the set-screw M', the forward end of which presses against the guide-rodK, :ts-*shown iniigs. 1 and 3. o
N" are the lower feed-rollers, which are placed beneath the feed-boze J', in such positions that their upper sides may project` through slots or openings in said feed-box, to takehold of the material to be fed forward'to the cutter.- l
The feed-rollers-N' are toothed spil-ally, as shown in figs. 1 'and 3, so that they may'always hold the material close up against the guide-plate 7' of the feed-box J'. i
The journals of the feed-rollers N' revolve in bearings attached to the under side of the feed-box J', and to their projecting ends are attached the gcarqvheels O', the teeth of which mesh into thetceth of the gearwheel P', attached to the end of the feed-shaft Q', to which motion is communicated by a band passing around the pulley R', attached to said shaft, and around the pulley N, attached to.4 the shaft M.
The feed-shaft Q' has a universal joint, S',formed upon it, so thatthe gear-wheels O' and P may always workfreely, at whatever angle the feed-box J' may be adjusted.
.'1" are the upper feed-rollers, thc journals of which are adjustably secured to lthe guide-plate j" ofthe feed-v v box J', or to standards attached to said feed-box, as shown in iig. 4, so that they maybe raised onlowered according tothe thickness of the material tobe operated upon.
I U' is adownwardly-projecting arm, attached to the lower part of the collar E'.below the pivoted or rockingplate or frame V, the lower end of` which is slotted, to receive theendofthe arm V', adjustably secured to the vertical shaft D' by a seit-screw, as shown in fig. 1.
This construction allows the feed-box J' to be set at an angle with the cutter, so that the said cutter may strike the material obliql'uely, and thus cut a wider groove than would be possible if the cutter struck .the material at right angles'to its length` W' is the cutter, which is attached to the cutter-head in the ordinary manner.
X' is the cutter-head shaft, to which motion is given in the ordinary manner,v by a band passing around a pulley, Y', attached to said shaft, or by any other-convenient means. i
I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I 1. Pivoting or hinging the feed-box J to the plate F'qattached tothe upper end' of the vertical shaft D',
substantially as herein shown and described and for the purpose-set forth.
2. '.lhe eccentric-plate or frame V, constructed substantially-as herein shown and described, in combination with the vertical shaft D', as and for the purpose. setforth'. l
.3. The combination of the adjustable connecting-rod U, and weighted or balanced lever Q, with the cani() and pivoted eccentric-plate or frame V, s'ubstantiallylas herein shown and-described and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination and arrangement of the slotted lever R, centrally pi-vted to the vertically-adjustable support XY, the rod Z and step A', with vrelation to the cam P and vertical shaft D', all constructed and arranged to operate in the manner and for the purpose, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. The combinatiouof the adjustable arm V' and slotted rigid arm U with the vertical shaft D' and piv- -oted collar E', through which said shaft passes, substantially as hereinshown and described, and for the purpose sel for-th n. H. RIPLEY.
