TEMPORAFiY BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1905.
Application filed ly 23, 1904:. Serial No. 217,850.
To all 107007 it 17mg concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS LEE, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain Improvements in-Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to so construct a temporary binder as to insure the quick clamping or release of the sheets or leaves of paper to be held thereby and to prevent the accidental removal of the adjustable clampingbar from thedevices which normally control and retain the same. These objects I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the manner in which my improved binder is intended to be used. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the adjustable clamping-head of the binder, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on a still larger scale.
In Fig. 1 of thedrawings 1 represents a number of leaves or sheets of paper to be clamped together, and 2 and 3 the bars between which these sheets are clamped at one end, the bar 2 being the fixed bar and having upwardly-projecting posts or standards 4., one near each end, these posts passing through suitable openings or slots in the sheets 1 and through similar openings 5 in the movable clamping-bar 3. so that the latter is guided on said posts and can be raised and lowered thereon to accommodate the number of sheets to be clamped. The bar 3 is hollow throughout the greater portion of its length, but has at each end a block 6, which partially embraces and constitutes a bearing for the corresponding post 1, as shown in Fig. 2.
Pivotally mounted in the center of the bar 3 is a two-armed lever 7, and to each arm of the latter is pivoted the inner end of a locking-bolt 8, whose outer end projects into a slot formed in the block 6 and is recessed to fit to the inner face of the post 4 when said bolt is projected, as shown by full lines in Fig. 2. Under these circumstances the bar 3 is firmly locked to the posts 4:, and having been previously pressed firmly down upon the top sheet of paper it serves to clamp the sheets between itself and the fixed bar 2; but
if the lever 7 is moved to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 by means of a suitable key inserted in a central socket 9 of the lever the locking-bolts 8 will be withdrawn sufficiently to relieve the posts 1 from pressure, and the bar 3 can then be raised on said posts so as to permit of the introduction of any desired number of extra sheets or leaves of paper, which can be again clamped by pressing the bar 3 firmly down upon the same.
and then looking it in this position by restoring the lever 7 and bolts 8- to their normal locking position, as shown by full lines in Fig. 2, the pivots of the bolts in such case being in line between the central socket 9 of the lever and the posts 4. The lever then has the maximum projection, and certain lugs 10 on the lever serve by contact with the bolts 8 to prevent any further movement of said lever in the direction of the arrow, and thus prevent the loosening of the bolts after they have once been fully projected by the looking movement of the lever.
The openings 5 in the bar 3 are countersunk, and the upper end of each post 4: has formed in it a threaded opening 11 for the reception of the stem of a set-screw 12, whose head projects beyond the top of the post and enters the countersunk opening in the bar 3, when the latter is fully raised, providing a neat stop flush with the upper face of the bar for preventing removal of the latter from the posts 4.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, in a temporary binder, of a fixed bar having projecting posts thereon, a movable bar having at the ends bearingblocks partially embracing said posts, a lever pivoted in a chamber between said blocks, and locking-bolts having pivotal connection with said lever and constructed at their outer ends to engage the projecting posts, whereby the latter are clamped between the bearingblocks and the locking-bolts, with stops on the lever to engage and limit the movement of the locking-bolt, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, in a temporary binder, of a fixed bar having posts projecting upwardly therefrom, a movable bar having at its outer end bearing-blocks partially embracing said posts and having slots therein, a lever pivoted in a chamber between the bearing-blocks, and locking-bolts pivoted at their inner ends to said lever and guided at their outer ends in the slots of the bearing-blocks, said outer ends of the locking-bolts bearing upon the posts whereby the latter are clamped firmly between the bolts and the bearingblocks, the ends of said lever having extensions on opposite sides placed to engage said bolts when the binder is locked to prevent further movement of the lever, substantially as specified.
3. The combination in a temporary binder, of a fixed bar, projecting posts thereon, a movable bar guided on the posts, a lever pivoted to said movable bar, locking-bolts pivoted at their inner ends to said lever and movable into clamping engagement with the said posts, and a stop on one of a pair of the mem bers comprising the lever and a'locking-bolt placed to-engage the other one of said members to prevent movement of the lever beyond the point of maximum projection of the bolts, substantially as described.
4. The combination in a temporary binder, of a fixed bar, projecting posts thereon, a movable bar guided on said posts, a lever pivoted to said movable bar having recesses in its ends, locking-bolts pivoted at their inner ends in said recesses of the lever and placed to be engaged by the walls of the respective recesses when in certain positions, the outer ends of said bolts being movable into clamping engagement with said posts, substantially as described.
5. The combination in a temporary binder, of a fixed bar, projecting posts thereon, a movable bar guided on said posts, a lever pivoted to said movable bar having recesses in its ends, locking-bolts pivoted at their inner ends in said recesses of the lever, the outer ends of said bolts being movable into clamping engagement with said posts, one side of each of said recesses being placed to serve as a stop for the locking-bolt pivoted therein, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
