WATER-HEATER FOR BOILERS. I
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHNMILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hot-Water Heaters for Boilers, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and Y use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in water-heaters for heating the feedwater for boilers prior to the entrance of the water into the boiler or boilers; and the invention relates more especially to a novel arrangement and combination of devices and parts comprising a system for preheating the feed-water for a boiler or boilers by means of the utilization of the waste heat nowordinarily lost in the fiue'or Smokestack of the boiler.
The present invention has for its principal object to provide a novel arrangement and.
combination of devices and parts with a view of producing a system for preheating the feedwater of a boiler or boilers 'by means of the lost or waste heat andto provide a simply and cheaply constructed system which shall be iafficient in its operation and most economica My invention consists, primarily, in the novel feed-water heater hereinafter set forth; and, furthermore, this invention consists in the arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be more particularly described in the following specification and then finally embodied in the claim which is appended to and forms an essential part of the said specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of a set of boilers with their smoke-flue shown in longitudinal tion. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section taken on line 3 3 in said Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow re, the parts being shown on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 4: is a similar section taken on line 4 4 in Fig. 2 of the drawings looking in the direction of the arrow y. Fig. 5 is a front view of portions of a pair of boilers and a longitudinal sectional representation of the smoke-flue thereof, showing in elevation a feed-water heater of still another modified arrangement and construction of parts, but still embodying the principles of this invention; and Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical section, on an enlarged scale, the said section being taken on line 6 6 in said Fig. 5 looking in the direction of the arrow 2.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference character 1 indicates one or more boilers of any known construction, and 2 is a smoke-flue arranged between the boiler or boilers and a stack 3 substantially in the manner illustrated. Suitably arranged within the said flue 2 is a support or supportsi, upon which is arranged and supported substantially in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings a coil 5. The said support or supports 4 are provided with suitably-disposed legs 6, preferably provided with the perforated lugs 7 and rivets or bolts 8, by means of which the support or supports are secured within the flue 2 substantially in the manner illustrated and by means of which the heating-coil can be located in close proximity to and is made to conform to the general inner contour of the flue to provide an inner central and unobstructed draft-passage. The feed-water to be preheated is forced into and through this heating-coil 5 from a pipe 9,
connected at one end with the inlet 10 of the ing-tank 16, the said pipe leading to a point near the inner lower portion of the tank 16, substantially as indicated in the dotted outline in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Connected with the said pipe 141 and leading into the boiler or boilers 1 are suitable feed-pipes 17, each feed-pipe being provided with the usual check-valve 18 and ordinary hand-valve 19. A pipe 20 may lead from the receptacle or tank 16 to any other part outside of the boiler or boilers for conducting the preheated water to any other point desired.
Referring now more particularly to said Fig. 1 of the drawings, it will be seen that the feed-water is pumped through the pipe 9 and into the heating-coil 5 in the flue 2, where the water is preheated by the escaping heat and gases in said flue, and is then drawn from the said coil, by means of the pipe 14, either into the hot-water receptacle or tank 16 or by means of the feed pipe or pipes 17 into the boiler or boilers. To remove any soot and other foreign matter from the said coil 5, I have arranged and connected a pipe 21 with an end or other suitable portion of the flue 2, from which steam or other matter, as compressed air, can be forced into said flue and between the members of the coil, thereby thoroughly keeping the said coil clean, as will be clearly understood. A valve 22 may be placed in the said pipe 21, if desired.
Instead of arranging the heating-coil 5 in the form of a spiral, as clearly indicated in said Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, I may use in place of this coil a sinuous arrangement of heating-pipes 23, forming a hollow cylinder, substantially as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4: of the drawings. This cylindrically-formed pipe-body 23 is arranged in suitably-constructed supporting-rings 21, which are secured concentrically with the inner cylindrical surface of the said flue 2 by means of the securing-bolts 25 and nuts 26, substantially in the manner shown in said figures of the drawings; but of course it will be understood that any other suitable supporting device or devices may be employed for securing the said pipe-body 23 in its operative position within the said flue 2. The arrangement of the connecting-piping leading to and from the said pipe-body or heater 23 within the flue 2 and the remaining devices such as the hot-water receptacle or tank, the pump, and the feedwater pipes leading to the boilersis the same as that hereinabove described in connection with Fig. 1 of the drawings.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have illustrated still another modified arrangement of the devices and parts embodying the novel features of my present invention. In this construction the flue 2 is provided with a heating-coil 5, which is hung in the said flue by means of hangers 27; but other suitably constructed supporting means, such as are shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, may be employed. In this construction the inlet-pipe 10 of the coil 5 has connected therewith a pipe 28, leading from a condenser or other water tank or receptacle 29, placed at a suitable point above the boiler or boilers and the flue 2. Leading from the op-' posite and outlet end 13 of the said coil 5 is the pipe 14, with which is connected a pipe 30, the said pipe 30 extending into a waterreceiver 31 for the reception of the preheated water coming from the said heating-coil 5. Connected with the said receiver 31 is a pipe 32, provided with a valve 33, said pipe 32 beingconnected with a pump 34 for forcing the preheated Water into a suitable feed pipe or pipes 35, leading to the boiler or boilers 1. The said feed-pipes 35, which may be of any known and suitable arrangement, are provided with suitable check-valves 36 and ordinary hand-valves 37, as shown.
From the foregoing description of my invention it will be seen that I have devised a simple device and system for preheating the feed-Water for boilers and other purposes, which is most economical and eflicient.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of this invention. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts as describedin the foregoing specification and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a water-heater for preheating the feedwater for boilers and the like, the combination, with a smoke-flue through which the hot gases from the combustion-chamber of the boiler escape, of a water-heating coil in said flue, said coil being located in close proximity to and conforming to the inner contour of the flue to provide an inner central and unobstructed space for a draft-passage, said coil having an inlet and an outlet, a pipe connected with said inlet, and a pump connected with said pipe, a second pipe connected with said outlet of the coil, a feed-pipe between said second pipe and a boiler into which the preheated water is to be fed, a receiving-tank in which said second pipe terminates, and an outlet-pipe leading from said receiving-tank, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
