F. MURER. LOCKING DEVICE POR PRINTING `FORMS.

UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
LOCKING DEVICE FOR` PRINTING-FORMS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1'9, 1905.
Application led August 18, 1904. Serial No. 221,264.
T @ZZ whom it' may concern:
Be it known that I, FRITZ MURER, engineer, whose post-office address is No. 29 Ostendstrasse, Nuremberg, Bavaria, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices for Printing-Forms; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in locking devices for printing-forms adapted to be interposed between the furniture or chase and the matter set up and to lock or adjust said matter in a prescribed position within the chase.
My invention consistsA in a locking device comprising a chase-block provided with an eX- tensible or reciprocating quoin and means for reciprocating' the quoin consisting of a spiral adapted for engagement with a spiral segment on the quoin and means for limiting movement of the quoin in opposite directions, thereby preventing disengagement of the reciprocating means.
My invention will be more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure lis a view in plan of my improved locking device, showing the quoin in a retracted position. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on lineA B of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line C D of Fig. 2 looking toward the left. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the same line looking toward the right.
Like characters of reference designate similar parts throughout the different figures of the drawings.
My invention comprises a chase-block a, provided on one side with an elongated engaging surface for contact with the chase or body portion c of the quoin is provided with a centrally-disposed recess e. One member of the means for actuating the quoin consists of a segmentblock provided with a spiral segment 7c, which is located in said recess `and secured to the quoin by a screw Z passing through said block and having screw-threaded engagement with the body portion c of the quoin. Said screwZ is desirably of sufficient length to enter the groove m, with which it cooperates to limit reciprocation of the quoin in opposite directions. The other member of the quoin-actuating means comprises aiiat spiral member g, rotatively mounted in the chase-block Z and adapted to cooperate with the segment ,zu in reciprocating the quoin in opposite directions. The spiral member g is provided with a projecting hub extending through and fitting snugly within the circular aperture in the block ci.
By my improved construction the body portion of the spiral member is interposed between the segment-block and the upper wall of the chaseblock o, while the projecting hub directly engaging the chase-block serves to not only effectively secure the spiral member in position, but also to directly transmit stress of the quoin to the chase-block. This is an advantage of great practical importance,
since I am enabled to entirely avoid the necessity of providing additional anchorage for securing the spiral member in place. l It will also be noted that the screw Z, operating in the slot m, serves to limit movement of the quoin and to prevent the spiral member g from becoming disengaged with the segment rZt', thus enabling the screw Z to perform the double function of a clamping means for the segment-block and a stop for the quoin. It will be obvious, however, that this feature of the invention might be realized in structural parts differing from those shown.
vThe hub of the spiral member g is provided with a square recess Zi, adapted to receive an operating-key a', whereby the spiral member may be manually rotated to actuate the quoin. This actuating means, however, may also be varied, as it will be obvious that. any detachable form of device for rotating the spiral member would be eifective.
My invention has the advantage of simplicity and compactness of construction, the parts thereof being readily accessible and easily removed in case of repair or renewal. The operating parts are designed to transmit the strain IOO IOS
IIO
directly to the chase-block, which may be constructed of suitable material and in a manner to easily sustain the strain imposed thereon.
Vhile I have herein shown and described a single embodiment of my improved locking device, it Will be obvious that changes may readily be made therefrom Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Therefore What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isw v l. A locking device for printing-forms comprising a chase-block provided with a transverse passage, an extensible quoin slidable in said passage, a spiral-worm segment removablysecured to said quoin, `and a spiral-worm member located in said passage and engaging said segment', said Worm member having a h ub projecting through an aperture in the chaseblock, provided with a recess adapted to receive an actuating-key.
2. A locking device for printing-formscomprising a chase-block provided With a transverse passage, an extensible quoin slidable in saidv passage, a spiral-Worm segment for said quoin, and a spiral-Worm member engaging said segment, said Worm member having a hub projecting through an aperture in the chaseblock.
3. Alocking device for printing-forms comprising a chase-block provided with a transverse passage, an extensible quoin slidable in, said passage, a spiral-Worm segment removably secured to said quoin, a screw passing through said segment and quoin and engaging a slot formed in said passage, and serving thereby to limit movement of said quoin.
4. A locking device for printing-forms comprising a chase-block provided with a transverse passage, an extensible quoin slidable in said passage, a spiral-worm segment removably secured to said quoin, a screw passing through said segment and quoin and engaging a slot formed in said passage serving thereby to limit movement of said quoin, and a spiralworm member engaging said segment Whereby said quoin may be actuated.
5. Alockingdeviceforprinting-orms comprising a chase-block provided with a transverse passage, an extensible quoin slidable in said passage, a spiral-Worm segment removably secured to said quoin, a screw passing through said segment and quoin and engaging a slot formed in said passage, serving' thereby to limit movement of said quoin, and a spiral- Worm member located in'said passage engaging said segment, said Worm member having a hub projecting through an aperture in the chase-block and provided with a recess adapted to receive an actuating-key.
In testimony whereofl 1 afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
FRITZ MURER.
