Be it known that I,.VVALTER H. Con, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pressure-Pads for Gilders Tools, of which the following is a specification.
In depositing gold, silver, or other metallic leaf upon uneven surfaces it is necessary to press the leaf into the hollows which occur between the raised portions of the surface which is to be ornamented; and my invention relates to an improvement in the pressure-pad employed for this purpose, as hereinafter set forth. r
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a gilders tool provided with the improved pressure-pad, a portion of the frame being broken away to show the package-roll of metallic leaf, the pad being shown in side view. Fig. '2 represents an end view of the gilders tool provided with the pressure-pad. Fig. 3 represents a section taken in the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A represents the pressurepad, which is made of porous rubber, having an integrally-vulcanized covering-rind 6 extending along its bearing portion 0 and around its ends, but not extending over the sides at (Z of the pad, the pores e c of the rubber being left exposed at the sides of the pad, as shown in the drawings, whereby a pressure-pad is produced having the desired yielding quality and a proper bearing-surface for action upon the paper strip.
B represents the backing-support for the pad, and G a handle by means of which the gilding-tool is operated.
In using the improved gilding-tool for depositing metallic leaf upon uneven surfaces the paper strip D is to be first drawn from the package-roll E around the end of the pressure-pad A, thence along the face of the pad, and then over the guide-bar F, by means of which the paper strip D after the metallic leaf G has been deposited therefrom will be held in an elevated position. When a suflicient length of the metallic leaf has been brought forward from the package-roll E by pulling upon the end of the paper strip D, the metallic leaf and paper strip are to be pressed upon the prepared surface which is to be decorated, thus causing the said metallic leaf and strip to be pressed into the recesses of the said surface by the yielding nature of the pad, and then upon raising the pad the paper strip freed from the deposited metallic leaf is to be brought forward over the guide-bar F, and thus held away from the surface upon which the metallic leaf has been deposited.
The pad A, formed of porous rubber having a vulcanized covering-rind b, which extends along its bearing portion and over its ends, provides a suitable even surface over which the paper strip may be drawn from the package-roll, and at the same time the open sides (Z (Z allow the desired extent of yielding movement inthe porous material of the pad.
I claim as my invention The combination of the support for the pad, and means for holding a spirally-wound package-roll of metallic leaf, with the yielding pressure-pad formed of porous rubber having an integrally-vulcanized covering or rind at the bearing-face of the pad and at its ends beyond the said bearing-face, and having the pores of the rubber exposed at the sidesof the pad, substantially as described.
