IMPROVEMENT IN GANG-PLOW.
@te Schnitte referat in in igise ttta's ntent mit mating peut tf tip time.
TO ALL WHOM, IT MAY CON CERN:
4,Be it known that I, JAMES T. WATKINS, of Santa Clara, county of Santa Clara, State of California, have invented an Improved Gang-Plow; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are snilicient to enableany person skilled in the art or sciencet'o which itniost nearly appertains to make and use my snid invention or improvements without further invention or experiment.
The nature of my invention is the construction ofan improved gang-plow, having for itsohce, nrst, anovel method of raising and lowering the plows, either separately or' collectively, so as to entirely clear the ground; second, a device by which the depth of the furrows is determined and regulated; it also relates to a simple mode o f raising, and lowering the furrow-wheel, so that the machine shall at all times stand horizontal, whether at work, or passing from one point to another." T
Theniachinc is mounted upon three wheels, the steering-wheel being'placed behind, and so mounted as to follow easily in the furrows. Its periphery is made convex, in order to give it a hold upon the ground, and to guide more easily, as well as to make it self-cleaning. The same form is used for the other wheels.
To more fully explain my invention, reference is. had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, of Which- AFigure 1 is a plan of my plow.
Figure 2 is a side elevation,rwith a section through X Xp.
Similar letters of reference in each of the iignres indicate like parts.
A is a strong framework of wood, mounted upon two `bearing-wheels, B B', and supporting the shafts or axles C C, to which the plows are attached. These axles turn in boxes, D, on the frame. Iron blocks E E' are attached to the axles by set-screws F F, and the Shanks G G'ot` the plows H H pass `entirely through these blocks, and are held by set-screws I, so that the plows may'be elevated or lowered, at pleasure. Bent arms J .and J' extend forward from the blocks E E', and have the regulating-screws K K' passing vertically through their front ends, the screw K' resting on the bar L while the screw K rests upon the block E". By turning the'se screws to .the right or left`,`r`the plows are either raised or lowered, so as to vary the depth oi' the furrows, while by the wedgesa'ftthe plows may be turnedto or from the land.
The arm J is bent upward far enough-to form a convenient handle at M, by which the driver can raise the plow. Anotherbent arm, N, extends forwardfroln the block E", and has a loose connecting-rod,. O, which can be attached to the lever-handle M, so that both plows can be raised to clear obstructions, or one may be raised by detaching this rod. A catch, P, is attached to the frame, so that, when desired, the plows may be permanently raised from the ground, the catch holding uprthe arm J', and by means of that the arm J.
The wheel B is mounted upon a stationary axle, extending partly across the frame, while the axle of the wheel B' is bent at right angles, so as to extend upwards at the side of theframe. At the topit is again bent, soas to form a strong nut, R, over the frame. Through this'nut the screw S passes vertically, its lower end resting upon an iron plate on the frame, while .the upper end may be provided witha crank or hand-wheel, V, by
which to operate it. The screw passes, with a shoulder, through thestandard T, by which it is supported, so as to move the' wheel and its 4axle up and down when turned. v
By this arrangement. the furrow-wheel can be lowered, so as to level the machine, when it is not at work, or it may be raised so :is to be level when moving from place to place on the road, and the plows can be Vthrown np at the same time, and be retained by the catch P, thus making a simple and easily-regulated plow.
The wheel B B' and the centre-wheel I; are made convex, as shown at C C, so that they will run steadiel" and the soll will not adhere t0 them, thus makingthem self-cleaning.
I Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. -The plows' H H, in combination with the blocks E E', thc holding-screws I I, by which the plows are adjusted, and the wedges a a, constructed and arranged substantially as described. v
2. The'bloeks E E mounted upon the axles C C', and the bent arms J J', witht-he set-screws K K' for regulatf `ing the depth of the farrows, substantially as described.
3. The bent arm N andconnecting-lod O, with the handle M and the `09.12011 P, for diseugaging the plows,
substantially as described.
4. The beni'l axle R, with the nut; R and the screw S, formaising and depressing the furrow-wheel, substan tially as described. l
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal. l
' J. T. WATKINS. [L. 8.]
