UNITED sTATns PATENT OFFICE.'
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29, 1905.
v Application led June 22, 1904l Serial NO- 213,664
To all whom, it muy con/cern."
Be it known that I, Josnrn Fossnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crawfordsville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to hinges.
It has for its object to retain the cover on the receptacle at all times, lock it in position upon the receptacle, and permit said cover to be swung around and suspended at the side of said receptacle.
To this end the invention consists of a projecting arm adapted to be secured to the body of the receptacle and having a lug with an enlarged head adapted to confine a plate portion adapted to be fastened to the cover and having a slot partly straight and partly rounded out to permit it to swing laterally and to pass over the end of said arm, so that the cover can be hung from said arm at the side of the receptacle, but not allowing said slot to pass over the head of the lug on said arm, the straight portion of said slot adapted to fit around said lug and below the head thereof to lock the cover against upward movement with relation to the body of the receptacle. If the lug is made angular in cross-section, as shown in the drawings, and the straight portion of the slot is made to fit closely around said lug, the cover will be locked against lateral movement.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a broken elevation of my hinge attached to portions of the body and cover of a cylindric receptacle, the hinge being in a locked position. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a broken sectional view on the line w of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the plate, taken on the line y g/ of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an elevation looking inward toward the end of the arm, showing the plate connected to the cover turned and in the act of passing over the end of said arm; and Fig. 6 is an elevation taken from the same point as Fig. 1, showing the cover hung from'the arm at the side of the receptacle.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the hinge comprises a bracket 2, having an outwardly-extending arm l and an inwardlyextending lug 3, adapted to be seated upon a ledge of the receptacle 4. At the end of the arm is an upstandinglug 5, having an enlarged head 6. Said lug is preferably angular in cross-section, and it is attached to the arm by screw or other suitable connection. The outer end of the arm is enlarged and preferably rounded. Above said arm, adapted to work back and forth on said lug and confined to said arm by the head on said lug, the plate 7 connected at its inner end to the cover 8,A is provided with a slot 9 in its outer portion. Said slot is partially straight at its outer extremity and rounded out, as at 10, at its inner extremity. The walls of the rounded-out por# tion are inclined downwardly and outwardly, as at 11, to permit the opening to pass over the end of the arm to drop the cover at the side of the receptacle, but leaving the opening at the upper surface of the plate so small that it will not pass over the head of the lug. The arm is of such width, at least at one point, as at 12, to permit of the passage of the restricted portion of the slot therearound.
In the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the cover is in place on the receptacle and is looked against upward or lateral movement. To remove the cover, it is pushed back until the enlarged portion of the slot in the plate is around the lug. Said plate will then be free to revolve around said lug and the cover turned to either side to provide access to the receptacle. To drop the cover to the side of the receptacle, the enlarged portion of the slot is slipped over the end of the arm, as shown in Fig. 5, at a sidewise position, and said cover is turned so that it is suspended at the point 12 of said arm by the extremity of the straight portion of the slot. To place the cover on the receptacle, this operation is reversed.
If desired, the lug may be made round, so that the plate and cover may revolve freely around it, but still locking said cover-against upward movement.
I am aware that other changes may also be made in my invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof. I therefore reserve the right to make such changes-as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hinge comprising a bracket having a projecting ar'm provided with a lug having an enlarged head, and a plate portion having a slot and confined to said arm by the head of IOO IIO
said lug, a portion of said slot being adapted to fit closely around said lug and also having a portion wider than said lug but narrower than the head of said lug.
2. A hinge comprising a bracket having a projecting arm provided with a lug having an enlarged head, and a plate portion having a slot partially straight and partially rounded out, the straight portion of said slot adapted to fit closely around said lug, said plate confined to said arm by the head of said lug.
8. A hinge comprising a bracket having a projecting arm provided witha lug angular in cross-section, said lug having an enlarged head, and a plate portion having a slot partially straight and partially rounded out, the straight portion of said slot adapted to fit closely around said lug and lock said plate against lateral movement, said plate confined to said arm by the head of said lug.
4. A hinge comprising a bracket having a projecting arm provided with a lug having an enlarged head, and a plate portion having a slot partially straight and partially rounded out, the straight portion of said slot adapted to it closely around said lugs and the walls of the enlarged portion of said slot inclined outwardly and downwardly whereby it is adapted to pass over the end of the arm, said plate conned to said arm by the head of said lug.
5. A hinge Vcomprising a bracket having a projecting arm provided with a'lug having an enlarged head, said arm having an intermediate laterally-reduced portion, and a plate portion having a slot partially straight and partially rounded out, the straight portion of said slot adapted to {it closely around said lug, and the enlarged portion of said slot inclined outwardly and downwardly whereby it is adapted to pass over the end oi"l the arm so that the plate portion may be suspended by the extremity of the smaller portion of the slot engaging the intermediate laterally-reduced portion of said arm.
In testimony whereof I a'ix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
