Be it known thatI, EDWIN REUEL MERRILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in lVIining-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a mining-machine embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is atop plan view. Fig. L is a transverse section on the line m of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical section through the motor and gearing. Figs. 6 to 13 are detail views.
The machine is composed of two main parts, one being a bed-frame and the other a sliding carriage. The bed-frame has the longitudinal side bars A A, which at intervals are joined to cross-braces or frame-pieces a, each having' a ground cross-bar a and legs or uprights a2, which are secured to the side bars A. The side bars have a vertical portion t3 and a horizontal flange ff. At the rear end there is a cross-bar a5, which not only serves to firmly brace together the rear ends of the side bars A, but also provides means for moving' the machine laterally or otherwise on the ground, it having extensions as, against Which the operatives can place bars or levers. At the front end the side bars A are joined by a cross-bar B, which is also utilized to support the forward portion of the sliding carriage, it having a guide at b, furnished by downward extending' arms or hangers 7/. The front end of the machine is also provided with a jack or fastening device C, having theA legs c c hinged to the bed-bar, the sleeve c on the legs, the jack-point c2, carried by a threaded stem c3, the threaded sleeve 0*, and the hand-wheel 05, secured to sleeve c4.
The carriage or sliding portion of the entire machine consists principally of two frames, one a cutter-supporting frame (indicated as a whole by D) and. the other a platform or frame at the rear, (indicated as a whole by E.) The frame or platform E is fitted to move between the side bars A of the bed. It may be formed of a supporting-plate and the several necessary attachments whereby it can have secured to it a motor or engine and the lshafting and gearing necessary to act-nate the cutters and to move the carriage longitudinally of the bed, or the metallic parts constituting this rear frame or platform can be all or approximately all cast integral and shaped so as to serve not only as a general support for the aforesaid parts, but also so as to serve as the field metal of a motor. The latter plan of construction is illustrated in the drawings. F indicates the metallic part of a motor constituting a magnetic circuit of its field, and at the bottom there are arms or extensions, as at ff, projecting in suitable directions for providing a support. At the front edge of this frame or platform and preferably below it there are aguide for the rear end of the cutter-frame and means for adjusting said frame longitudinally and for fastening it and which will be described.
By inspecting the drawings it will be seen that provision is made for a motor having a vertical armature.
The armature-shaft is indicated by G, the lower end passing through a bearing at f2 in the bottom wal'l f3 of the casting for the platform or for the bottom of the motor. The commutator is situated atff. i shaft at its upper end has a bearing atf" in a cross-piece or closing-platef, secured to the motor metal and lying across the upper end of the armature-chamber.
H is the armature-pinion. It drives a larger gear-wheel I, which is arranged horizontally and preferably directly behind the armatureshaft. This wheel I is secured to a vertical shaft J., the latter also carrying at its lower end a sprocket K, which engages with and drives the cutters. Shaft J is mounted in vertical bearings at lfand j', carried by a bracket or brackets cast with or bolted to the motor or frame casting. This shaft has also secured to it a Worm L and a pinion Z.
M is a cross-shaft mounted on the rear part of the carriage, preferably in bearings at m, provided by brackets or arms m', cast with or secured to the rear frame or motor metal. This shaft M has carriage-moving pinions N N, which lie above and engage with racks an, that are rigidly secured to the side bars A of the bed. These are preferably lantern-racks in which the teeth are separated by apertures or passages extending vertically entirely The armature- IOO through the bars, so that slack, cuttings, or other foreign particles can escape or be crowded downward, and thus prevent choking, bind.- ing, or clogging of the racks and the wheels N. T is a clutch splined to the shaft M and situated between the loose wheels P and S. It can be moved to engage with one worm- Wheel or the other or can be situated in an inactive position. When the Wheel S is clutched to the shaft M, a relatively slow rotation Will be imparted to the shaft M and the pinions N, because of the speed-reducing gearat Z Q and the relations of the worm R and its pitch to the diam'eter and teeth of the wheel S. TheclutchTis provided with a series of grooves or ribs z5, and with these engage a ribbed or grooved plate U, carried by a lever V, which is pivoted at v and extends to a point 'behind the gearing and has its rear end curved or cam-shaped, as shown at e. W is a cam adapted to be adjustably secured tothe bed-frame bar a5. With the clutchthrowing devices a hand-lever V2 may be combined, adapted to operate in any suitable Way. When the clutch T is in engagement with the wheel S, the carriage will be advanced forward slowly-that is, with a' speed corresponding to the rapidityv vof the cut in the coal. `When it reaches the forward end of its path at the y'completion of Vthe cut,
latter is rotating in a direction opposite to that of the wheel S and with a higher speed, and therefore when the clutch engages with it the carriage Iis brought-back more rapidly, and the backward movement continues until the cam o on lever V strikes the cam W, whereupon the clutch is moved away from wheel P to its inactive position and the carriage stops, although the motor may continue in motion. The wheels P and -S lare revolving continuously and, as above said, oppositely.
' By arranging the gearing in the manner described I am enabled to bring the framework low and to place the entire mechanism cornl 2. The carrier 2 is practically a unitary part,
though I construct it of two side bars 4 4 and an intermediate brace, preferably formed of a channel-bar 5, the lianges of which are secured to the side bars 4 4. At the rear end this carrier is secured to a guide and fastening-piece 6, which has vertical flanges 7 and a cross-plate 8, provided with an aperture 9.
The above-described platform or framecasting F has a guideway at 18, formed by a slot or groove into which the bars 4 5 6 can be fitted and which permits it to be moved forward .and back therein.

11 is a screw engaging with the threaded aperture in the nut 10, this screw being supported at its inner end at a seat at 12 and at its outer end in a bearing at 13. 1n addition to the screw for fastening the nut 10 there is a clamping device having a nut 14 and a washer 15 cast together.
When i-t is desired to adjust the cutter-frame forward or back on the platform or rear frame, the clamp at 14 15 is loosened and the screw 11 is turned in the proper direction, and the draft thereby exerted causes the nut 10 to pull or push the carrier 2 and the parts connected therewith forward or back. 16 represents the chain, having the cutters 17 attached thereto. This chain engages with and is driven by the sprocket-wheel K and passes thence along the guides 3 and around the front'cross-head 1. lt is this chain which requires adjustment, either tightening or loos'- ening, from time to time and for which operation the screw 11 and nut 10 are provided.

In a mining-machine the combination of a bed, a carriage movable thereon, cutters on said carriage, a motor on said carriage-having i the bed, thecarriage having the cutter-frame a vertical shaft, a horizontal feed-shaft geared directly with said bed to actuate the carriage, two gearing members loose on said horizontal feed-shaft, means for connecting either of said members with the feed -shaft, 4two vertical shafts and ditferently-speeded gearings connecting the two vertical shafts with said loose gearing members respectively to turn them in opposite directions and means for connecting the motor-shaft with the cutters'to actuate the latter.

In a mining-machine the combination of a bed, a carriage movable thereon, cutters on said carriage, a motor on said carriage having a vertical shaft, a horizontal feed-shaft geared directly with said bed to actuate the carriage, two worm-wheels loose on said horizontal feed-shaft, means for connecting either of Asaid worm-wheels with the 'feed-shaft, two vertical shafts and differently-speeded gearings connecting the vertical shafts with said worm-wheels respectivelyfto turn them in opposite directions, and means for connecting the motor-shaft with the cutters to actuate the latter.

In a mining-machine the combination of a bed, a carriage movable thereon, cutters on said carriage, a motor on said carriage having' a vertical shaft, a horizontal feed-shaft geared with said bed to actuate the carriage, two gearing members loose on said horizontal feed-shaft, means for connecting either of said members with the feed-shaft,'a central vertical cutter and carriage-actuating shaft geared l with theimotor-shaft for relatively high speed,
a second carriage -actuating vertical shaft mounted eccentrically to the first-mentioned vertical shaft and geared with the latter, and differently-speeded gearing's, connecting said two vertical shafts respectively with said loose gearing members on the horizontal feed-shaft to turn them in opposite directions, and means for connecting the first-mentioned vertical shaft with the cutters to actuate the latter.
7. In a mining-machine the combination of a bed. a carriage movable thereon, cutters on said carriage, a motoron said carriage having a vertical shaft, a horizontal feed-shaft geared with said bed to actuate the carriage,
y a central vertical cutter and carriage-actuating shaft geared with the motor-shaft for relatively high speed, a second vertical carriage-actuating shaft mounted on a different axis from the first shaft and connected therewith by slowing-down gearing, a worm on the first vertical shaft, a loose worm-wheel on the feed-shaft,connected directly with said worm, a worm on the second vertical shaft, a second loose worm-wheel on the feed-shaft engaging with the last-said worm, a clutch between said loose worm-wheels on the feed-shaft and means for connecting the central vertical shaft with the cutters, substantially as set forth.
8. In a mining-machine, the combination of and the frame or platform at the rear, the motor carried by said rear frame and having a vertical armature-shaft, the two vertical shafts in rear of the motor, said shafts being `eccentric to each other, the gearing at the lower end of one of said shafts connecting it with the armature-shaft, the gearing at the upper ends of said shafts connecting them together, the horizontal transverse carriagemoving shaft, and the two trains of differently-speeded continuously-rotating gearing respectively connected with the said vertical shafts and both detachably connected with the carriagemoving shaft, substantially as set forth. v y Y 9. In a mining-machine, the combination of the bed, the carriage having a cutter-frame and a frameor platform at the rear, the electric motor on the said rear frame and having a vertical armature-shaft, a vertical shaft in rear of the armature, gearing connecting it to the armature-shaft, a chain-wheel at the lower end of said rear vertical shaft, a transverse carriage-moving shaft. bed-racks near the level of said transverse shaft, worm-gearing connecting said transverse shaft directly to the said rear vertical shaft, pinions on said transverse shaft in line With and engaging directly with the racks, said worm-gearing being adapted to rotate the transverse shaftin one direction for moving the carriage, oppositely-rotating devices comprising' a second vertical shaft, worm and worm-wheel for rotatingthe trans- ICO verse shaft in the opposite direction with a dif- Q ferent speed, and means for connecting said transverse shaft to either of said sets of gearing, substantially as set forth.
l0. In a mining-machine, the combination of the bed, the carriage, having'the cutter-frame, and the frame or platform at the rear, the electric motor on the rear frame having a vertieither of the sets of carriage-moving devices substantially as set forth.

In a miningmachine,the combination of the bed, the carriage having the cutter-frame and the frame or platform at the rear, the electric motor on said rear frame, a vertical shaft `in the rear of said motor geared directly to the armature, a transverse shaft, formoving the carriage, geared directly to the vertical shaft, a second vertical shaft eccentric to and geared directly to the first vertical shaft and geared directly to the transverse shaft, the two gearings 'for the transverse shaft being adapted to rotate it in opposite directions with differentspeeds, means for throwing into operation either of said sets of gearing and a cutter-driving wheel carried by one of the vertical shafts, substantially as set forth.

In a miningmachine,the combination of the bed, the carriage having the cutter-frame and the rear platform or frame, the motor on the rear frame having a vertical armatureshaft, the vertical shaft in rear of the motor geared directly to the armature-shaft, the horizontal chain sprocket-wheel on said vertical shaft, the transverse shaft, for moving the carriage, geared directly to the vertical shaft, the feed-pinion on the transverse shaft, and the rack on the bed below the pinion and having openings between its teeth, substantially as set forth, the raclrbeing engaged directly by the feed-pinion on the transverse shaft.

Ina mining-machine, the combination of the bed, a carriage having a cutter-frame and a rear frame or platform, an electric motor on the said rear frame having a vertical armatureshaft, a vertical shaft in the rear of the motor and geared directly to the armature-shaft, said vertical shaft having a relatively large gearwheel, a sprocket-wheel, a worm and a relatively small gear wheel or pinion, a transverse carriage-moving shaft geared directly to the said worm and directly to the carriage for moving the carriage rapidly in one direction a train of gear interposed. between said pinion and said transverse shaft for moving the carriage slowly in the opposite direction and the clutches interposed between said trains of gearing and said transverse shaft.

Inamining-machine,the combination of a bed, a carriage movable thereon, cutters on said carriage, a motor on said carriage, two vertical shafts, oneof which is geared to the motor-shaft and both of which are geared together, a transverse carriage-moving shaft geared` with said bed to actuate the carriage,
trains of diferently-speeded gearing interposed respectively between each of said vertical shafts and the said transverse shaft, and adapted to turn the said feed-shaft in opposite directions,the clutches interposed between said transverse shaft and each of said trains of gearing and means for connecting one of said vertical shafts with the cutters to actuate the latter, substantially as set forth.
15. In amining-machine the combination of a bed, a carriage movable thereon, cutters on said carriage` a motor on said carriage, a horizontal feed-shaft geared with said bed to actuate the carriage, two vertical shafts geared to the said motor and each directly geared to said feed-shaft and adapted to turn it in opposite directions and at different speeds. the clutches'interposed between said feed-shaft and the sets of gearing arranged to actuate it and means for connecting one of said vertical shafts with the cutters to actuate the latter, substantially as set forth.
