END-GATE FOR WAGONS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, 1905.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PI-IILETUS WALKER, of WVadena, VVadcna county, and ROBERT R. TICHENOR, of Feeley, Itasca county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Grates for Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in end-gates to be used on farm or other draft wagons; and it consists generally in the construction and combination hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 is an end elevation of a wagon-body with our improved gate applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line a: of Fig.1 Fig. 3 is a partial plan of the wagon-body shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an inside end elevation of a portion of the side of the wagon-body. Fig. 5 is a horizontal detail section. Figs. 6, 7, 8, 9, and are details.
In the drawings, 2 represents the sides of the wagon-body, which may be constructed of any convenient width. A top box 4 is arranged to rest upon the sides 2. This top box may be used whenever it is desired to use a wagon having a larger body than is pro vided by the sides.
An angle-plate 8 is secured to the inside of each of the side-boards 2 at or near its extremity. These plates are preferably made of metal and are provided with the openings 10. The rear of the plates is roughened, as shown in Fig. 7.
A plate 12 is secured to the inside of the top box and is arranged to be vertically in line with the plate 8 when the top box is in position upon the body of the wagon. An opening 14 is preferably formed in this plate near the top of the plate substantially similar to the openings 10 in the plate 8, though it may be shorter than those openings.
The plate 12 is provided with a dowel or projecting finger 16, which preferably projects downward upon the inside of the sideboard 2 and is received in sockets 18 upon the plate 8 for the purpose of securing the two sections together.
An end-gate 20 of substantially the same width as the side-boards 2 is provided.
We also provide an additional section 22 of the width of the side pieces of the top box.
The two sections when placed together will form an end-gate whichwill fill the opening at the end of the wagon to the top of the top box.
One end of each of the sections 20 and 22 is provided with two or more hook-shaped lugs 23, which are adapted to engage the openings 10 and 14 in-the irons 8 and 12. The other end of the section 22 is provided with a swinging bail-shaped lever 25, which is provided at its ends with the hooks 27. The lever 25 is fulcrumed upon the casting 29, which extends across the end of the section.
The end of the lever 25 is provided with a projecting end 31, and a pivoted arm 33 is arranged upon the section of the end-gate and is adapted to engage this end of the lever. This section of the end-gate is put in place by inserting the hooks 23 at one end in the openings 10 in the irons 8 and then inserting the hooks 27 in the openings 10 in the iron 8 at theother end of the body. The lever is then turned back against this section of the endgate and secured there by the pivoted arm 33.
The other section of the end-gate is provided with hooks 35 at one end and with a casting 37 at the other. Upon the casting 37 are the lugs 39. A lever 41 is pivotally secured upon the lugs, being connected therewith by the links 43. The lever 41 is provided also with hook-shaped ends 45, which are adapted to engage the openings in the irons 8 and 12. The ends of the lever 41 are corrugated or roughened on their inner surface, and the corrugated ends come against the roughened inner surfaces of the irons 8, and thereby keep the end-gate from slipping vertically on these irons.
With this device thus constructed the endgate 20 may, if preferred, be put in place close to the bottom of the body when the section 22 is not used or at a short distance above it. The lever 41 may be locked by means of a pivoted arm 47, secured upon the end-gate.
By this construction we are enabled to hold the sides of the body together without the use of cross-rods.
The lower section 22 of the end-gate may be inserted or removed without disturbing the other section, and that section will not slip down when the lower one is removed owing to the engagement of the roughened ends of its lever with the roughened parts of the irons 8. The upper section, it will be seen, engages both the side-boards 2 and the.
top box 4. It therefore not only holds the sides and the top box from spreading, but it also locks the top box upon the side-boards.
The bottom of the body is supported upon the sides by means of the bolts 51, which pass through the lugs 53 at the lower end of the plates 8, thus dispensing with the iron strap ordinarily used.
We claim as our invention 1. In a wagon, the combination with the sideboards 2 and the narrower top box 4, of the end-gate formed in two sections 20 and 22, one of said sections being provided at one end with a locking device arranged to engage with the top box and the side-boards, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a wagon having sideboards 2 and extension-boards 40f a less width than said side-boards of the end-board 20 having a width equal to that of the side-boards 2 and the end-board 22 of a width equal to that of the extension-boards 4, one end of said board 20 being provided with projecting hooks 23, adapted to enter slots 10 in the side board 2 and the opening 14 in the extensionboards 4, the other end provided with movable hooks adapted to enter similar slots 10 in the side-board 2 and opening 14 in the extension-board 4, said hooks being adapted to be locked in position when so entered, where by the side-boards and extension-boards are severally locked to the end-board.
3. The combination in a wagon of the sideboards 2 and extension-boards 4, angle-irons 8 with roughened inner sides and having slots 10 and angle-irons 12 having opening 14, endboards 20 and 22 provided with the projecting hooks '23 and the levers 25 and 41, said lever 41 being provided with a hook end roughened and pivotally connected to swing-.
