To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that l, CHARLES W. DILL, a citi,- Zen of the United States. residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Machine for Securing Stoppers to Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a machine for-aflixing stoppers to bottles, embodying means for twisting the wire of the Stoppers placed around the necks of the bottles and then closing down the twisted portion upon said necks.
Figure l represents a partial side elevation and partial longitudinal section of a machine for securing Stoppers to bottles embodying' my invention. Fig. 2 represents an end view of a portion thereof. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a portion opposite to that shown in Fig. 2. Figs. 4L and 5 represent end views of the portion shown in Fig. 3, including transverse sections of the neck of a bottle during the twisting` and closing down operations. Fig. G represents an end view of the lever and connections at the left of Fig. l. Fig. 7 represents a perspective view of a bottie and a bottle-stopper in primary condition thereon. l

Referring to the drawings, A designates the .main shaft of the machine, and B designates a driving-drinn which is freely mounted on said shaft and provided with a sleeve or hub C, whose bearings are on the standard D, said shaft also passing freely through said sleeve. The portion of the shaft A opposite to the sleeve C has its bearings on the standard E, and the adjacent end of said shaft carries the power-wheel l?, it being noticed that a spring lfl is interposed between the side of said wheel ln and the standard lil, it being also noticed that said shaft has sliding' motions in its bearings, said spring F being intended to return said shaft to its normal position.
G designates a clutch member which is feathered on the shaft A, se as to be capable of sliding thereon to and from the drum B, it being' noticed that the side of said drum constitutes the opposite member of a clutch, said side having therein a recess lll, which is adapted to .receive the tooth J on said member whereby the members of the clutch may be interiocked, and thus cause the shaft A to receive motion from said drum and the clutch member G.
Connected with the terminal of the sleeve C is the conical head K, and connected with the adjacent end of the shaft A is the head L, in the forward end of which are the slots or recesses M, which extend at an angle to each other and are in communication with the recess N in the center of said head L.
Mounted on the head L are the jaws l?, which in the present case are four in number, and they are adapted to occupy said recesses M, respectively, and play therein, said jaws rearward of their axes being' carried by the limbs Q, whose terminal portions are adapted to be engaged by the conical head K, the tendency of which is to close said jaws and move lthem toward the central opening N in the head L. Connected with said limbs and said head L are springs R, whose object is to open said jaws and restore them to their normal positions. Opposite to the head L is the head S, which occupies a position at a right angle to said head L, said head S being rotatably mounted on the standard T. Projecting laterally from said head is the plug U, and surrounding the same are the lingers V, it being noticed that said plug is adapted to enter the mouth of a bottle and the lingers V to embrace the exterior of said mouth, thus supporting the mouth portion of the bottle against the head S during the operation of applying and twisting the neckwire of a stopper to the bottle. ln order to rotate the head S and its appurtenances, the former has connected with it the lever Wl of the form of an elbow, one limb Vil of which is connected by the spring X to the lever Y, which is connected by the rod Y with the lever Z, the latter carrying on its end a roller Z/ and having connected with it the spring' Z2, the latter being' attached to a lixed place and said levers being suitably mounted. K L is the spring K, for purposes to be hereinafter explained.
The operation is as follows: Power is communicated to the drum B and the wire of a bottle-stopper fitted to the neck of a bottle, as in '7. rlhe bottle is then presented to the head S and held firmly thereon by the plugll and lingers V. The clutch member G is now advanced toward the drinn B without rotating; but the shaft A moves with said member when the recesses M in the head L receive the projecting ends or legs of the neckwire. As the wheel F follows said shaft A, the spring F is compressed. As soon as the member Ur reaches the drum B it advances the saine and causes the head K to engage Between the heads with the levers or limbs Q of the jaws P while compressing the spring K. Simultaneously therewith the member G is clutched with the drum B when said member and consequently the shaft A and the head L are rotated. The jaws P are closed by the head K and so bring the legs of the neck-wire close together and fully wrap the same around the neck of the bottle. At the same time as the head L continues to rotate the projecting ends of the legs are twisted, they being embraced by all of the jaws and so are uniformly held. The operator now moves the lever IV, whereby the head S is rotated, when the adjacent finger V advances against the twisted ends (see Fig. 4t) and bends and closes the same against the neck of the bottle, as seen in Fig. 5. Simultaneously therewith the limb IV' of the lever IV moves the levers Y and Z and raises the roller Z and forces it against the terminals of the twisted ends and presses them fully home against the neck, as also shown in F ig. 5. The lever IV is then rotated in reverse position, when the head S and connected parts resume their normal positions, the roller Z being' removed from the twist of the wire. The member G is also operated or let go, so that the clutch is disconnected, when the spring K', being permitted to expand and pressing against the head K, forces the latter and the drum A to its normal position. The spring F' is also permitted to expand, when it exerts pressure on the wheel F and forces the same in the present case to the right, and with it the shaft A, when the head L and accessories are also returned to their normal positions.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction shown without departing from the general spirit of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in each case to the same.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is4
1. In a machine for securing a stopper to the neck of a bottle, a primary rotatable device, a driving-shaft on which said device is freely mounted, a head connected with an end of said device, a head connected with said shaft, and provided with recesses therein, jaws mounted on the last-named head adapted to play in said recesses with their other ends in the path of the head on said device to be directly engaged thereby, and means for moving the first-named head into engagement with said jaws.
2. In a machine for securing a stopper to the neck of a bottle, a primary rotatable device, a driving-shaft on which said device is freely mounted, said device constituting' one member of a clutch, a clutch member movabl y mounted on said shaft, a recessed head connected with an end of said shaft, jaws mounted on said head and adapted to play in the recesses in said head, and means on said device adapted to engage members of said jaws and close the latter.
3. In a machine for securing a stopper to the neck of a bottle, a primary rotatable device, a driving-shaft on which said device is slidingly mounted, a sleeve on said device freely receiving said shaft, a bearing for said sleeve, a conical head connected with said sleeve, a movable clutch member on said shaft adapted to engage said primary rotatable device, a recessed head on said shaft, and jaws mounted on the latter-named head and movable in the recesses thereof, said conical head being adapted to engage with said jaws to close the same.
4. In a machine for securing a stopper to the neck of a bottle, a primary rotatable device, a driving-shaft on which said device is slidingly mounted, a conical head on a side of said device, a recessed head on an end of said shaft, jaws on the last-named head adapted to play in the recesses therein, means for exerting pressure laterally on said device interposed between said heads, a bearing for said shaft, and means for exerting pressure laterally on said shaft interposed between said bearing and a fixed part of said shaft.
5. In a machine for securing a stopper to the neck of a bottle, a holder for the neck portion of the bottle composed of a head, a plug projecting centrally therefrom, and a finger projecting from said head around said plug, said plug and finger being rigid with and rotatable with the head.
6. In a machine for securing a stopper to the neck of a bottle, a holder for the neck portion of the bottle, means for rotating said holder, means for bending the neck-wire of the stopper around said neck, and means for laterally bending the twisted ends of the wire.
7. In a machine for securing a stopper to the neck of a bottle, a holder for the neck portion of the bottle, means for rotating said holder, means for bending the neckwire of the stopper around said neck, and means for twisting the ends of said wire.
8. In a machine for securing a stopper to the neck of a bottle, a holder for the neck portion of the bottle, means for rotating said holder, means for bending the neck-wire of the stopper around said neck, means for twisting the ends of said wire, and means for laterally bending the twisted ends of the wire.
9. In a machine for securing' a stopper to the neck of a bottle, a rotatable bottle-holder, and'pivoted means exterior of the holder for pressing the ends of the neck-wire of said stopper close to the neck of the bottle.
10. In a machine for securing a stopper to the neck of a bottle, a rotatable bottle-holder, means for twisting the ends of the wire, and means for pressing the ends of the neck-wire of said stopper close to the neck of the bottle, said means being connected with said rotatable holder and operated thereby.

In a machine for securing' a stopper to the neck of a bottle, a rotatable hottle-holder, a roller adapted to press the ends of the neck- Wire close to the neck of a bottle, a lever carrying said roller, and means connected 'with said roller and holder whereby the said roller is operated by the operation of said holder.
12. In a machine for securing` a stopper to the neck of a bottle, a rotatable bottle-holder,
a roller adapted to press the ends ol the neck- Wire of said stopper close to the neck ot' the bottle, a lever carrying said roller, a lever attached to said holder, and yielding connectlons for said lever.
