DUMPING-CAR. i
Patented Aug. v 1, 1905.
.ippiicaaonmed-Aprii18,1905. serian). 256,180.
To @ZZ whom it may concern/.j
Be it known that I,'MOKINLEY BOYLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Dumping-Oar, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in dumping-cars of that class in which the dumping is from the sides.
In dumping-cars the load isgenerally piled to a considerable height above the car-body, and therefore when the opening between the car-licor and the open door or siding at the dumping side is limited practically to the height. of the end boards the discharge of material is retarded by the door, and therefore slow.
It is the object of my invention to provide a simple and novel means to swing the door to a plane considerably above the plane of the car-body and possibly above the ytop of the load, thus providing a Wide opening through which the load may quickly discharge.
I will describe a dumping-car embodying.
my invention and then -point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
. inwhich similar characters of reference in' dicate corresponding parts in both the figures. Figure 1 is an end view of a dumping-car embodying my invention, showingit in normal position; and Fig. 2 is an end view of the car in dumping position'.
The body of the car comprises a iioor 1,
fixed end boards 2, and vertically-swingingV doors or side boards 3. The body is mounted to swing on the truck 4, the swinging connection of course being at the center of the body. As the means for swinging the door or side board .open upon the dumping of a .car is the same at both sides, a description of one will answer for both.
Rigidly fixed tothe upper portion of the door 3 at each end is a link 5, the said links being pivoted to bolts 6 on the fixed end boards. From the low'er portion of the door links 7 extend to and are mounted to swing on the pivot-bolt 6 for the link 5. There is a swinging connection between each link 5 and the truck-frame. As here shown, each swinging connection consists of telescopic members 8 9. On one Vof the members is rigidly secured a loop 10, through which the other member slides. The member 8 is pivotally connected to the link 5, while the member 9 is pivotally connected toa lug 11 on the truckframe. The body is held in its normal 0r level position by means of chains 12, having hook portions 13 for engaging with links 14, attached to the truck. Y
In the operation when it is desired to dump the car the chain connection at the side opposite the dumping side is 'to be released and the body tilted. During this tilting movement the swinging connection between the car-body and the truck at the side opposite the dumping side will be elongated, while the connection at the dumping'side will retain its normal length. Therefore as the body is moved downward the door or side board at the dumping side will be forced upward Ito a point considerably above `the body, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2, thus providing a wide opening for the discharge of material. When the car-body is in normal position, the ends of the end members 8 of the connections between inwardly-extended lugs on the links 5 and the truck vwill engage between keepers 15 on the outer members, thus preventing any swinging movement of the members with relation to each other.
It will be noted that the pivots 6 are located off or laterally of the center of the end boards,
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a dumping-car, a tilting body, a door, a link extended from the upper portion of the door and having pivotal connection with a fixed portion of the car-body outward of the longitudinal center-of thecar, a link extended from the lower portion of the door and engaging with the pivot of the first-named link, anda swinging connecting-bar between said first-named link and the car-truck.
2. In a 'dumping-car, a tilting body, a door at the side thereof, a link extended from the upperv portion of the door and having pivotal connection with the end board of the body laterally of the end-board center, a link extended from the lower portion of the door and engaging with the pivot of the first-named link, and a swinging telescopic connection between said first-named link and the eartruck.
3. A dumping-ear eomprisinga tilting body having swinging side doors or boards and fixed end boards, links rigidly connected to the upper portions of the doors or side boards laterally of the end-board center having pivotal connection with the end boards, links having rigid4 connection with the lower portion of the doors and having connection with the pivots for the first-named links. and telescopic bars pivotally connected to the rstnamed links and having pivotal connection with the truck, whereby the telescopic bars opposite the dumping side will be elongated during the dumping, and the telescopic bars at the dumping side retain their normal length.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MCKINLEY BOYLE.
