Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. DAVIDSON, acitizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Brush and Stopper for Bottles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of brushstoppers for bottles that have valve attachments; and it consists in combining with a brush-stopper a peculiarly-constructed valve device.

. The object is to provide a brush or sponge in connection with the stopper that can be saturated by simply tipping up the bottle and one that will not allow of any leakage. This object I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an elevation showing the upper part of a blacking-bottle having one of my brush-stoppers attached, the cap being removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, but showing the cap in position and the valve closed. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical section showing the valve open and the cap off.

In the drawings let B represent a bottle of any ordinary and convenient size adapted to hold liquid blacking, 850.

A is a block of wood or other suitable material made as shown and is attached to the part D, which is constructed to fit into the neck of the bottle.

A sponge or brush S is attached to the part A. The part S acts as a distributer and may be made of any suitable material that is adapted to temporarily hold a liquid and to freely give it out when compressed. An opening immediately below the substance S leads to the interior of the bottle, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. This opening is provided with a valve V, which has a stem V, which in turn is connected at V with a bent lever L L. The bent lever L L has afulcrum at or near its angle in the piece R. The piece R is of an elastic nature and while fitting fluid-tight it will permit of the swinging of the lever L L. By swinging the lever L L the valve V is made to raise and lower that is, to close and open.

A thin cap O is constructed to fit over the parts S and A, as shown in Fig. 2.

The operation of my device is as follows: When the cap O is off, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the valve V will be open, it being so arranged in connection with the elastic piece R that it will remain open unless forcibly closed, as it will be when the cap O is forced down onto it, as shown in Fig. 2. By tipping the bottle the fluid will flow into the part S and saturate it.

I claim- 1. A combined stopper, valve and brush, comprising: a cap; a stopper having a recess at its top constructed to receive a sponge, and having a valvular passage connecting said recess with the interior of the bottle; a sponge in said recess; a valve constructed to control said passage and having attached to it a bent lever, one end of said bent lever extending downward and outward whereby the cap, when put on, will comein contact with the said arm, and pressing it inward will close the said valve; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A combined stopper, valve and brush, comprising: a cap; a stopper having a recess at its top constructed to receive a sponge, and having a valvular passage connecting said recess with the interior of the bottle; a sponge in said recess; a valve constructed to control said passage and having a lever for operating it; an elastic piece in which the said lever is fulcrumed; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
