Application filed October 30, 1903. Serial No. 179,189.
To all, whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, FRANK E. FARNHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at'lrovideuce, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to the class of buttons, and more especially to that kind of button in which lever-arms are pivotally mounted on the post of the button and are capable of turning thereon to the extent of ninety degrees.
In the accompanying drawings, in Figs. 1 to 10, inclusive, is shown my invention and parts thereof in that class of buttons known as pointers and adapted for use in the neckband of a shirt to fasten a collar thereon and also to confine a necktie in proper position.
A represents a spring-section forming one part of the post of the button. It has a base with flaring portions (t provided with straight bottom edges It and an intermediate tang or projection a it also has the two square shoulders a" at its upper corners, and a curved central extension (15, (best seen in Fig. 2,) made with a three-sided seat a, the angular direction of each side of which is illustrated in Fig. 2. Said spring-section A also has a hole o near the base for the passage of a rivet.
B represents a rigid post-section having a base with flaring portion 6, provided with straight bottom edges 1) and an intermediate tang or projection. 6 .lt also has the two square shoulders I) at its upper corners and a central extension I)". The post-section B has a hole for the reception of a rivet.
O is the lever-arm, transversely slotted near its inner end, as shown at o in Fig. 8, so as to provide an integral cross-bar c rectangular in cross-section. This lever-arm (I may have either of the forms shown in Figs. 7, 8, 9, or 10, and may have slots of different shapes, as there illustrated. to make the same lighter or more ornamental.
The tangs a Z) are bent in opposite directions, and a button-head or ornamental front may be secured to said bent tangs by soft solder, as illustrated in Fig. 5, or a lining plate or disk D maybe used, which is centrally perforated, so that the tangs a. I) may be inserted through them before bending and afterward may be bent into contact with the under side of said disk or plate 1), and thereafter the button-front E may be fastened upon the lining plate -or disk 1) by rolling the edge thereof over it, as seen in Fig. 6.
The parts of my improved button are assembled as follows: The projection (1 of the spring-post A is inserted through the slot 0 of the lever-arm C, the cross-bar c of the latter resting in the seat of of said spring-post A. The two post-sections A and B are placed together in contact, and a rivet F, inserted in the holes a and is secured in place and fastens said post-sections together.
As best seen in Fig. 5, there is a difference in the length of the post-sections A and B, which is equal to the thickness of the crossbar 0 of the lever-arm C, and, as best seen in Fig. 6, the thickness of the post section A is the same as that of said cross-bar c. The consequence is that when the lever-arm G extends at a right angle from the post-sections the outer edge of said cross-bar c is in line with the outer edge of the shoulders Z) of the post-section B, as seen in Fig. 5, and when the lever-arm C is extended in the plane of the post-section A the straight edge of the leverarm 0 is continuous with and in line with the outer surface of the post-section A, as seen in Fig. 6. In this manner the lever-arm G is prevented from swinging beyond said line.
In Figs. 11, 12, and 13 is shown aconstruction by which my said invention is adapted to cuff-buttons by duplicating the spring postsections, as at A, and riveting them respec tively on opposite sides of the rigid post-section B. Two lever-arms C are mounted by their cross-arms in the seats of the curved ends a of the spring post-sections A. One of the lever-arms C may be made longer than the other, if desired, as shown in Fig. 13, to facilitate the entrance of said lever-arms through the button-holes of the cuff and also to enable the wearer to take hold of the lever-arms more easily after they have been inserted through the button-holes for the purpose of turning said lever-arms separately down from the entering position (shown in Fig. 13) to the wearing position. (Shown in Fig. 11.) cuff-buttons embodying my said invention the post-section B preferably has no tang, and the ornamental button head or front is secured in position by means of the bent tangs a The rigid post-section B (or B) serves not only as a firm support to which the spring postsections may be riveted, but is useful as providing a wearing-plate against which the square end of the cross-bar c of the leverarms C may bear and is especially important as constituting a locking-surface to receive the contact and pressure of the cross-bar c of the lever-arm C by the spring action of the curved end a. of the spring post-section A.

I claim as a novel and useful invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a button, the combination of a rigid post-section having opposite plane parallel surfaces, a spring post-section riveted near one end to the rigid post-section and formed with a three-sided seat at its opposite end, and a lever-arm having a slot to receive the lastnamed end of the spring post-section and provided with a cross-bar which is rectangular in cross-section, three sides of which are in contact and engageable with the three sides respectively of said seat in the spring post-section and a fourth side of which is in contact and engageable with the inner plane surface of said rigid postsection, substantially as described.
2. In a button, the combination of a spring post-section A, having the two shoulders a and the intermediate curved projection 60* which is provided with a seat a, the rigid postsection B having the shoulders b and the intermediate straight projection 6*, said projections (0* and 11* being flush with each other at the ends thereof but said shoulders (15 being distant from the shoulders 7) to an extent approximately equal to the thickness of the postsection A, the rivet F fastening said post-sections A and B together near the opposite ends thereof, and a lever-arm G having a slot 0 through which the projection (0* of the postsection A extends and also having a cross-bar 0' rectangular in cross-section and mounted between the post-sections A, B, in the seat a, substantially as described.
