ESPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,659, dated February 28, 1905.
Application filed September 14, 1903. Serial No. 173.162.
1'!) (NZ 1071,0171, if; Hutu cancer/t.-
lie it known that I, IIORACE JOHN runks, a subject of His iYlIajesty the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing in Manchester street, Christchurch, in the Provincial District of Canterbury, in the Colony of New Zealand, have invented anew and useful Stop for \Yindows or Doors, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention provides a cheap and effective device whereby a window or door to which it is applied may be secured against opening from the outside beyond a predetermined limit.
:lte'lerring to the drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure l is an inside elevation of a sash-window; Fig. 2, a front perspective elevation showing the stop closed; Fig. 3, a similar view showing the stop open, and Fig. 4C is a side sectional elevation,
The same numerals indicate the same parts throughout the figures.
The bracket 1 is disk-shaped, so that it may be readily titted into a circular hole formed by an ordinary boring-bit in the window-sash 2, the face of the bracket being flush with the surface of the sash. Holes 3 receive woodscrews 4:, by which the bracket is secured. A catch-lever 5 lits within a diametrical recess 6 in the bracket and is pivoted therein near its edge at one end upon a pivot-pin 7. A liat spring 8 within theu'ecess and held in position by a rivet 9 bears against the under side of the pivoted end of the catch. The forward end of the catch is beveled to permit a linger to be passed beneath it to turn it upon its pivot,
When it is desired to prevent the window from being opened from the outside, the catch is turned upon its pivot into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 8 and in dotted lines in Fig. 4-. The point at which the catch is pivoted prevents it lrorn ti'irning after the catch is at right angles to the bracket, and when attempt is made to open the window the lower sash contacts with the catch.
hen applied to a door, the bracket is sunk in the floor, and when the catch is raised the lower edge of the door contacts with it and prevents the door from opening farther.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
For the purpose indicated in combination a disk-shaped bracket having holes to receive screws by which it is held in position, and a diametrical recess, a catch-lever fitting said recess and pivoted therein, the forward end of said catch-lever being beveled, and the pivot arranged so that said catch isprevented from turning beyond a right angle to the bracket, and a Hat spring secured within the recess adapted to maintain the catch in position when turned upon its pivot at right angles to the bracket substantially as set forth and illustrated.
.In witness whereof ,I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
HORACE JUHN W ICEKS.
