PATENT OFFICE.
TEIWVARD WALTER, OF KEYTESVILLE, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF THREE- FOURTHS TO J. J. ELSOFFER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
THlLL-COUPLlNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,487, dated February 28, 1905. Application filed January 25, 1904. Serial No. 1?]0505.
1'0 (tZZ whom. it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD XVALTER, a citizen of the United States. residing at Keytesville, in the county of Oharlton and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful lmprovemcnts in Thill-Oouplings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in thillcouplings, and has for its object a construction whereby the thills may be coupled to the axle of a vehicle without the use of bolts, screws, or rivets and also to provide means for preventingrattling. 1
A further object is to provide a coupling which shall be simple in construction, having no complicated parts to get out of order, and which shall withal be thoroughly reliable in operation.
in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View. Fig. 4 1s a plan view wlth the thilliron removed. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the thill-iron.
Referring to the drawings, 7 indicates a metal block having a socket 8 to receive the thilliron 9. Arms 10 extend rearwardly from the block across the top and bottom of the axle 11. A, bolt 12extends through the ends of the arms, by which they are drawn together against the axle, whereby the coupling is securely held in place thereon. Shoulders 10 abut against the rear of the axle and strengthen the hold of the arms thereon.
The thill-iron has a cylindrical head 9, which tits in the socket 8. The shank of the thilliron extends through a slot 13 from the socket to the outside in front. This slot also forms shoulders 13 in the socket, against which the head of the thill-iron bears and which prevents its withdrawal.
The socket opens toward the top of the block and contains a block 14 of rubber or other elastic material, against which the head of the thill-iron bears and whichretains it in the socket and also prevents rattling. The block 14 is held in place by a strap 15, which extends around the block 7 and is fastened thereto by a wedge-key 16, which extends through slots in the free ends of the strap, the bottom of the block 7 having a groove 7 to receive the key. The key has a suitable end lock, preferably a transverse pin 17, extending through a hole in the end thereof.
The coupling is readily attached by spreading the arms 10 apart and slipping them over the axle, after which the bolt 12 is inserted and tightened up. The arms are formed of suitable spring metal. The thill-iron is placed in the socket, the block 14 first being removed. The block is then placed in the socket and secured. by a strap 15, the latter being fastened as heretofore described. The device is readily attached and removed, and when the block 1% is worn it can be conveniently removed and replaced.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
A thill-coupling comprising a block having a socket to receive the thill-iron and arms which extend rearwardly across the top and bottom of the axle and have shoulders extending behind the same, a bolt through the arms behind the axle, an elastic bearing-block in the socket on the thill-iron, a strap around the socket-block over the bearing-block, and a wedge-key extending through the free ends of the strap.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWVARD \VALTER. Witnesses:
