- My composition consists of the following ingredients combined in about the proportions stated, viz: aqueous solution of magnesium chlorid of gravity about 23 Baum, three parts; calcined magnesite, (native magnesium carbonate,) two parts; beach-sand, four parts; carborundum (silicide of carbon) screened thirty to sixty mesh, three parts. These ingredients are to be thoroughly mixed by stirring. The mixture is placed in the grooves of the plates or frames commonly used and allowed to stand for about four or five hours and if the surface of the composition is of considerable width may then be smoothed down with a masons trowel or otherwise to the tops of the grooves. The material becomes hard enough for use in a few hours after troweling.
- This composition does not polish by the wear to which it is subjected, but retains a non-slipping surface in all weathers and is much cheaper than the lead commonly used for similar purposes and does not, like lead, track or discolor marble or other white stairs or adjacent floors.

COMPOSITION OF MATTER FORTILLING THE GROOVES 0F METALLIC PLATES, &C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,288, dated February 21, 1905.
Application filed October 20, 1904. Serial No. 229,232.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. LAMSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Composition of Matter to be Used for Filling the Grooves of the Metallic Plates or Frames of Stair-Treads and Vault-Lights and for similar purposes, of which the following is a specification.
My composition consists of the following ingredients combined in about the proportions stated, viz: aqueous solution of magnesium chlorid of gravity about 23 Baum, three parts; calcined magnesite, (native magnesium carbonate,) two parts; beach-sand, four parts; carborundum (silicide of carbon) screened thirty to sixty mesh, three parts. I claim as my invention 1. A composition of matter containing carborundum, magnesium chlorid and magnesium carbonate.
2. A composition of matter containing carborundum, sand, magnesium chlorid and magnesium carbonate.
