JOHN R. STAPLES, OF GINCINNAII, ()IIIO.
BLANK BOOK OR ALBUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,286, dated February 14, 1905.
Application filed July 10 1902. Serial No. 115,097.
1'!) (MI whmw it NMLZ/ con/corn..-
Be it known that 1, JOHN R. STArLEs. a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blank Books or Albums, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a transparent hollow blank book or album leaf with apertures or slots at its margins to insert and exhibit pictures, designs, and the like on one or both sides.
My invention further relates to blank books or albums having holders at top for hczulings and at the sides and foot for different labels and having one or both sides of leaf transparent. The leaf or leaves are made of two transparent or one transparent and one opaque piece of material of the same size and are arranged adjacent and parallel to each other and fixed together at the margins by bindings or glue with a space between. A slot or aperture is made at any of its margins, one or more, for securing or receiving pictures, designs, and so on.
The object of my invention is to provide a blank book or album for stands, desks, and the like, having leaves where pictures, maps, drawings, headings, designs, and the like may be taken out and others inserted at any time desired; also, that they may be kept from Inutilation and free from dirt and the hollow transparent leaf may be easily wiped or d usted, thus preserving the picture. To illustrate, when being used for the name of hotel over the top of its register or forsidc or foot notes the surface can easily be kept clean.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cover for hotel-register, showing tabbed leaves inserted. Fig. 2 is a section on the line .1 .1: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3/ 1/ of Fig. 1 looking toward the right. Fig. I is a sectional view showing a cover having the label-holders around the margin elevated. Fig. .5 is a plan view of a hollow leaf transparent on either side, having a tab for attaching to a cover. Fig. 6 is a sect-ion on the line a a of Fig. 5. Fig. '7 is a section on the line I) l) of Fig. 5.
I prefer to construct my blank book or album as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. The cover I, of any suitable material, is hinged, as shown at The transparent material 3 is attached to the cover I by the holders I in such a manner as to leave spaces 5 between the cover 1 and transparent material 3. Openings 6, leading to the spaces, are provided on the edge of the cover for the insertion of display matter, as at T in Fig. 1. The holders 4: may all be on the same plane, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or those on the margin may be elevated above the central portion of the cover, as shown at I in Fig. I, this construction being for the purpose of raising the matter displayed in the marginal holders, so that it would not be obscured when a large number of leaves are held in the cover. The leaves may be inserted as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 or in any other convenient manner. A cover for a hotel-register of the character described above may be constructed of durable material and given a finish that will make it attractive and easy to keep clean. Labels, notices, or any matter displayed therein will be protected and may be withdrawn and other matter inserted conveniently.
In using my invention as an album a leaf is inserted composed of two transparent thicknesses 8 and 2), held together by the holders 10, so as to leave a space 11 between them. An opening 12 is provided on the edge ofthe leaf for the insertion of any desirable matter into the space 11, to be displayed through the transparent thicknesses 8 and t). The tab 13, of flexible material, is suitably secured to the leaf for the purpose of attaching the leaf to the cover at the hinged portion Thus any number of leaves of this description may be bound within a cover similar to the one above described, forming an album for the presentation and exhibition of prints, drawings, and the like in a form convenient for reference, while the album may always be kept clean and the matter may be changed conveniently.
I claim 1. In blank books or albums, a cover composed of an outer layer or thickness of opaque material, an inner layer or thickness of trans parent material with a space between said layers, and having an opening adapted for the insertion of matter between said transparent material and opaque material to be displayed through said transparent material.
2. In blank books or albums, a cover having opaque flaps each provided on its inner side around the margins thereof with elevated label-holders, each holderhavinga transparent inner lining and provided with a space bejacent the hinge part thereof and label-holders around the margins of the cover.
5. In blank books or albums, a cover having a pocket transparent on its inner side and provided with an opening adjacent the hinge part thereof, and label-holders around the margin of the cover.
6. In blank books or albums, the combination of a cover, a leaf having transparent sides secured together at their margins to form a space between saidlsides and having an opening leading to said space, and means for securing said leaf within the cover for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
