Be it known that I, RUFUSDUTTON, of the city of New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, have inrentcd a new and improved Mode or Method of Constructing the Finger-Bar of Mowing and Reaping- Machines; and I do hereby declare that thef'ollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and making a part of this speeication.
The nature o1' character ofmy invention or improvement consistsg Firstly,l in forming, by suitable mechanism, a blank-or plate, of metal, of a width sufficient for two ingerd bars, having its edges raised or turned up, and having also two other raised-or elevated ribs or parts, parallel to and each'at such` a distance from each edge-of such plate, that when the plate is.cut diagonally lengthwise through its` central part, each part or half into which it is so cut will have its straight edge turned up or raised,
andwll also be raised or curved parallel to such front edge, and near to or towards the back side; and
Secondly, in forming a. finger-bar, with two parallel ribs or raised portions, one at the front or `straight edge, and the other near or toward the back side, whether such bar is made singly, or from a plato made wide enough for two bars, and. afterwards cut in two parts.

I consider it most preferable to rst form a plate or blank of metal wide enough for .two bars, and then cu't it in twdparts, as hereafter described. When this plan s adopted, a blank or plate of steel, or other metal, A13, is rolled out or formed', by suitable machinery or mechanism, of any thieknessdesired, and of a widthsnliicient for two iinger-bars. After the plate has been-so formed, and has been made the length required for the finger-bar, it is cut dr divided lengthwise, diagonally through its central portion, into two parts or halves, such diagonal line starting at one end ofthe plate, just behind one of the ribs or raised portions, c or d, `and terminating at the other end ofthe plate, just behind the other inside rib o r raised portion.
In gs. 1 and 2, the figures 1 2 indicate the starting and termination of such diagonal line` Each half of the plate, or each single bar A Aand B, has thus two raised or 'turned portions or ribs, one on the straight v edge of eac'h bar, andthe other parallel to it, and near'the back part of tho bar, and also forming the edge of the bar at its narrowest end. .At the widest end of the bar there will be, behind such back rib or elevated part, a Hat portion of the bar, which gradually decreases in width, and terminating at the narrowest end. Constructing the ngewbas of harvesters substantially as described, that is, forming a. metallic plate of n. breadth sul`n`cient for two bars, such plate having its cdges'taisecl or turned up, and also having ribs or raised portions towards its centre, and parallel with its .edgea so that when such plate is divided diagonally length- 1 wise, into two partsyit will form two bars, each having two parallel ribs or raised portions, substantially as set forth.
