APPLICATION FILED JULY 26, 1904 Patented, February '7'. 1905.
FRANK P. PF LEGHAR, JR, OF NINA HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
HINGE- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 781,905, dated February '7, 1905. Application filed July 26, 1904. S ia N- 218,269.
To a. wit/mt it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK P. PFL nenamJ r. a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New llayen, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in hinges; and itconsists in a hinge-member blank cut from a barofextrudedor rolled metal and having a normal transverse section of the same form as the correspondingsection of the completed hinge member.
My invention further consists in a hinge member cut from a bar of extruded or rolled metal and having its body of the same sectional form as the bar from which it was out.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents in plan a portion of a bar of metal with one of the hinge-member blanks severed therefrom, a broken line on the bar indicating where another blank may be severed therefrom. Fig. 2 is an end view of the blank. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of a bar of metal with the other hingemember blank severed therefrom, a broken line on the bar indicating where another blank may be severed therefrom. Fig. l is an end view of the blank. Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the hinge members when completed ready for assembling. Fig. ,6 is an end view of the same. Fig. '7 is a plan view of the other hinge member when completed ready for assembling. Fig. .8 is an end view of the same. Fig. 9 is a plan view of the'assemblcd hinge, and Fig. 10 is an end view of the same.
The bar of metal from which one. of the hinge members is to be severed is denoted by l and the bar of metal from which the other hinge member is to be severed is denoted by 2. These metal bars are formed by extruding or rolling the metal from a blank, thus densifying and strengthening metal from which the hinge members are to be formed. These bars have the same form in transverse section as the sectional form of the hinge members. The hinge members which are formed from the bar 1 are denoted by 3 and the hinge members which are formed from the bar 2 are denoted by l. The blanks which form the hinge members 3 are severed from the bar 1 of the desired length. One or more holes may then be cut through the blank for receiving the usual fastening-screws. Ears 6 and T are formed by cutting notches 8 and f) in one side of the blank. The other hinge-member blanks may be severed from the bar) of cor responding lengths to the blanks severed from the bar 1. One or more holes 11) are cut through the blank for receiving therethrough the usual fastening-screws. Ear-s11 and 12 are formed by cutting notches 13 14 in one edge of the blank, the cars 11. and 12 being littcd to be inserted into the notches S and 9 of the other hinge member at the same time that the ears 6 and T are inserted into the notches 13 1A for bringing the several cars into alinement when the hinge is assembled. Longitudinal holes 15 are bored through the ears 6 and T and longitudinal holes 16 are bored through the cars 11 and 12. A hingepintle 17 passes through the holes l5 16 for hinging the two members together.
It has been found practically impossible to cast a succession of hinge members of the same shape so as to insure the close litting of the two hinge members when assembled. This is due to distortion during the cooling of the castings and also to impossibilitw to mold accurately. By my present invention lam enabled to produce bars which will have the exact shape in cross-section which it isdesired for the members of the hinge. Furthermore, the hinge members may be very rapidly cut from the bar and will be thoroughly interchangeable.
By forming the hinge members from bars of extruded or rolled metal I am enabled to produce a very much stronger hinge than heretofore and one in which the liability of defects in the metal, which would tend to weaken the hinge, is obviated.
It is evident that the shape of the hinge may be varied to suit different requirements, the shape herein represented being only one of many which might be used.
of a hinge-pintle and the interengaging parts a of the companion member.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name, in pres- I 5 ence of two witnesses, this 22d day of J uly,
