SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 780,258, dated January 17, 1905.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL C. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whitewright, in the county of Grayson and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Harness Attachment, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to harness, and has for its object to produce a simply-constructed and easily-applied device wherebythe backband or saddle straps, the girth-straps, the draft-traces, and the hame-traces may be readily and securely coupled and connected and at the same time an efficient and easilyoperated thill or shaft support provided; and the invention consists in elongated metal loops to which the back-band, girth, drafttraces, and hams-traces are attachable and provided with integral spaced lateral loops for receiving the thills or shafts.

1n the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of the embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the invention is not necessarily limited thereto, as various changes in the shape, proportions, and general assemblage of the parts may be resorted to Without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages, and the right is therefore reserved of making all the changes and modifications'which fairly fall within the scope of the invention and the claim made therefor.

In the drawings thus employed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan view.

Fig. 5 is a side elevation, on a reduced. scale, of the improved device applied.

The improved attachment comprises an elongated metal loop 10, preferably of malleable iron or steel, to which the back-band strap 11, girth-strap or billet 12, draft-trace 13, and

hame-trace 14. are attached, as by sewing or riveting in the usual manner. Extending laterally from the loop are spaced integral loops 16, adapted to receive the free ends of the thills or shafts, one of which is indicated at 17. The loops 15 16 will be cast or otherwise formed integral with the loop 10 and in some cases may be incased in flexible ferrules 18 19, of leather or the like, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4-, and 5, to protect the thills or shafts from abrasion. By this means a very simply constructed and efficient coupling means is provided between the parts of the harness above enumerated, and at the same time an equally-efficient thill or shaft support is provided integral with the coupling means.

The device can be inexpensively manufactured and plated or otherwise coated or protected to conform to the other metal portions of the harness and can be of any ornamental or fanciful form and manufactured in any desired size to adapt it to the other portions of the harness.

Having thus described the invention, wha is claimed is A harness attachment comprising an elongated loop, the opposite end portions of which are bent inward for engagement with the inner side of a thill and for connection to the trace members, and a pair of curved loops connecting the side bars of the elongated loop at a point intermediate of the ends of the latter, said curved loops serving to embrace the outer side of the thill and acting also as side guards to prevent lateral displacement of the back-band and girth straps when the latter are attached to the side bars of the elongated loop.
