IMPROVEMENT 1N DIES Ponroneme nrt-noms.'
itin clgmle nimh in inthe: Stetten riznt mit mating putt nf .tte'smntf Y lO ALL WHOM IT CONCERN: A
Beit knownth'atI, FRANKLIN LEONARD, of Cleveland,` in the county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certainnew and nseful Improvements in Dies for Forging Eye-Bolts, Sto. g` and I do herebydeclare that the following is a. full and completo'description ofthe same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings,
making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1' is an end view of the machine. f
Figure 2, aj'tep view. Figure 3, detached dies. The other figures will-be referred to. x
Like letters of freference refer to like parts inthe diii'erent views. v Y A, iig. 1,*repre'sents a-block or 'ba.se,`4on"the top of which are secured the dies B 0. In the face of each die is sunk the form ofthe eye otfthebolt-rings D, Figure gone-halt the vthickness in euch die, which, on being placed upon `cinch othcryas shown in fig. 1, conform relatively to each other, forming e. matrix, fin which the ring is shaped. E, fig. 3, is a semispherical hollow, sunk in the fnce o f the-die C, which is the upper section. In the lower section,I B, is4 e. corresponding hollow, E', in the bottom-of which isfa hele, a, penetrating throughvthe die, thence down into the block, as .indicated by the dotted lines a', dgl-1. Gis a pedal, piratedV in the block, one end of which reaches inwardw throgh beyondthe hole the purposefot. 'which will-hereafter be shown. f
The practical use of this muchine'. is for forging rings or eye-bolts, so th'at the eye or ring shallbe without` e `jointgi'erging them'from fone-solid piece, thereby producing a strongcrringVthanfthose mede in the ordinary way, which is done by taking apiece of rod, of the proper size and length, and then bevelling one end into u loop orfoye. ThescringsLin consequence of the end not being welded,` or in any waysecured, are liable to spread if much strain is exerted upon them; hence they .arenot safe for purposes'where great strength is required; or ii, in some cases, the end is welded to the 'stom of' the bolt, the labor o f welding is A:tnrnatter .of `much tiln'eand lhence expense. This is not thc ense with rings made inthis machine, theybcing made out of solid head, in much less tiniefnnd' better-:1nd cheaper, in the following manner, vi.z`:}Ita.ke a piece oit' rod ot`` the propersize andlengtln'a's represented i'niig. 6, one end-oi' which-s then l1cated,anl the other inserted in the hole a. Enough of the rod projectslubove the face ot' the die to form n. head, which', on being upset, is rounded Vand shaped by the hollowsE E". '.lhis A,being done, the hented rodis then -pushed from the hole by means of the pedal zibove referred rod thus headed is 4shown iin Figure 4,vwhch,uwhile itis yet hot, is slightly flattened' bya blowvfrom'c. 'ham-mer, andthen 'placed inthe die ,D Theuppver secton,l0, is new closed' upon it, and the head therein madelto ass'ume'the. shhpe of the dies a few blows given upon the topi `oil-the,v
upper section, thus lformingn. jointlessring or loop'froin the solid head,.as shcwnin g.
What I claim as my'improvement, and desiretosecure by Letters Patent, is-'. l lhe-diesB when constructedand' arranged tn operate inthe-manner asf'and forthepnrpose specified.Vv
