Letters Patent No. 78,957, dated June 1G, 1858.
l -IMPROVED HORSE-POWER.

T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN.:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. GREEN, of North ,Vaterfori in the county of Oxford, and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improved Horse-Power; and I hereby declare' the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and use my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification', in whichv Plate 1 shows a top plan.
Plate Q, Figure 1, a side elevation of the revolving post and opening and closing wheel.
Figure 2, a side view of the adjustable friction-pulley.-
The purpose of my invention is the production of an improved horse-power for sawing and such like purposes. y
yA is any convenient base for the machine. BA is the revolving post set on its pivot, a. This post has the head C, in which are sockets Set' in and pivoted in these sockets are the arms c, which turn on their pivots up to a horizontal position, or can be turned down to rest against and around the post B, as indicated in fig. 1,` plate 2. Y Y l' These arms are further steadied Yby arms d, jointed to the 'arms c, and also to a sliding ring, e, which will slide upward and downward en the post, and allow the arms 'c to contract or expand, ns indicated, the same being similar inoperation to the arms or braces of an uinhrella-top.V
This is for convenience in carrying the said machine, as the arms c can thenV be lo\vered around the post B, and the whole occupyr but little space, and still constitute a `large wheel when expanded.
Around the periphery of the wheel thus constituted passes theoord f. The post B is braced bytwo diagonal horizontal arms g g. These nrenotched on to two upright posts at h, and then on to the top, 2.', ofthe post B. h
These bracesrg y are removable, so that they can be easilypaclsed with the other parts.
The cordfpasses around 4the adjustable pulley j, and then twice around the sha-ft k at l.
This horizontal shaft is set in the two uprights m m. The method of rendering the pulley j adjustable is seen at n by the means of a stud and slot. Thus the tightness ofthe cordf is controlled around the arms e and the shaft 7:.
Upon the shaft k is the large wheel o, which has a hand passing around it'and the shaft p. On this shaft l is set the saw g.
r is a bed withr slots and studs e, to adjust it and the saw q and shaft p in relation to the wheel o.
t is a rod, Vin staples or other devices in the lower side of the braces g g', and having at its end a truck, u,
which plays against the cordf, se as to keep the two turns of it around the shaft c separate.
Y By drawing the rod toward 1, the pulley will press' against the cordf and keep the two turns around k separate. The posts m m can be removed, and also the bed r, by means of its slots and pins s. i
Thus it'nill bc seen that the whole machine can be taken down and packed up into a small compass, coussting ofthe post B, with the collapsible top or wheel, braces g g', shaft 7c, posts m m, and bed and fra-me r, with the shaftu and saw q, and can be very easily set up again.
The operation of the machine is obvious, the revolution of the wheel made by arms c, carrying the belt f, revolves the shaft le and its wheel o, and this the shaft j) and its saw q with great rapidity.
By, the operation ofthe spring the pulley j is rendered self-adjustable, being pressed outwardly, so as to tighten the cord or beltf. i
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The removable, portable, and collapsible wheel, composed'of the arms e,- set in sockets b on the post B,
. having ring e and arms CZ, all as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combina-tion of the said wheel, composed of arms c, with the shaft r, wheel o, and saw-shaft 71, by means ol' cords or bandsfand e, as herein set forth.
3. The adjustable pulleys or friction-rollsy' and 2&as and for the described purposes.
l. The combination, in the manner herein set forth, ofthe different parts described, in the. manner and for the purpose of constituting a portable horsepower sawing-machine, capable of being taken apart and put together, as set forth.
