Description
@einen faire atmt @fitta DAVID S. HUTGHISON, 0F SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
Letters .Patent No. 78,669, dated June 9, 1868.
IMPROVED PLATE FOR ARTIFICIAL TEETH.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, DAVID S. HUTCHISON, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improved Dental Plate for Artificial rI'eeth; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are suicient to enable any person skilled in the art or Iscience to which'it most nearly appertains to make and use my .said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
The object of my invention is to provide a plate for artificial or false teeth, so constructed that there will be no danger ot` their loosening and dropping down when in use, and also to prevent the plate from irritating the palate, especially where the tissues ot' the alveolar and palatine arcl es are of unequal hardness.
My invention consists in having cavities of any desired form upon that portion of the plate corresponding to the external and internal borders of the alveolar ridge of the mouth, and connecting or not, as desired, with a chamber or cavity upon the central portion of the palatine arch; also, in having that portion of the plate which rests upon the palatinc arch, or any part of it, composed of a flexible material or compound, thereby securing a more perfect adhesion of the atmospheric plate to the root` ot' the mouth.
In order to more fully illustrate and explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a` part of this specilication, of which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, and
Figure 2 is a top view, showing the cavities.
A is a plate, to which artificial teeth are attached, having the usual atmospheric cavity, B, connecting with which are cavities or channels, an', b b', c c', made in the upper part of the plate, corresponding with the bordersof the alveolar ridge ot' the mouth.y Back of the atmospheric cavity B, where the plate comes in contact with the palatine arch, .I make a cavity, C, a little deeper than the atmospheric cavity, and place in it any elastic or flexible material, D. I prefer unvulcanized India rubber. vThis rubber or elastic material is fastened down in the cavity by small pins at each end, which permit of its being detached, for the purpose oi' cleaning it. When this cushion is in place, i-t makes that portion oi' thc plate slightly thicker than the parts surrounding it, so that when thc plate is inthe mouth, the elastic cushion will rest upon the most tender part ot" the palatine arch, and thus prevent irritation and soreness. The plate is held more firmly to the palate on account of the saliva, which finds its way under the elastic cushion, and prevents any access ot' air to the atmospheric cavity. These cavities may he varied, to suit any 4port-ion of the palate where there is any tendency to soreness.
This application ot' a ilc'xible material may be made to all kinds of plates, such as gold, silver, platinum, aluminum, or porcelain, and the vulcanite base, to bc used as obtarator-plates in remedying defects of the soft or hard palates, or as a base oi' any hind for artificial teeth, in whole or partial sets.
By this means -I have a suction-plate for artificial or false teeth that will not be continually looscninrar and dropping down, while the teeth will answer for the purposes of mastication, and arenot liable, like the old plate, to loosen when the back teeth aroused, and one that is altogether freefrom irritation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A exihle cavity-plate, having, in part or in whole, the palatine portion of the plate made of iexiblc material, D, in connection with a compound cavity or series of cavities, united or otherwise with a cavity on the centre or palatine portion of the plate, and upon, the internal yor external (or both) borders ot` the alveolar ridge, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
D. S. HUTCHISON, [1.. sl]
