SPECIFICATION tori-11mg part of Letters Patent No. 78 3.399; dated March 14;, 1905.
\ .icatien tiled January 12, 1995. Serial 1%. 240,8 t0.
this speciiicatiom and to the ninnerals of ref-" erence marked thereon, in-which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the jack and longitudinal section ofthc handle, showing handle folded in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 .5, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of the jack sockethead and foot showing the cap removed.- hig. 4 is a detached perspective view of the cap. Fig. 5 is a face view of the foot.
The present invention has relation to ditch; ing-jacks; and it consists in the novel construction hereinafter described, and particuhnly pointed out in the claims.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures of the drawings.
1n theacconnianyingdrawings, i represents the'jack-stem, which may be formed of any desired length and is provided with an enlarged screvwthreaded portion 2, upon which screwthreaded portion is adjustablv attached thcjack socket stem or member 3. The jack-stem 1 is provided with the foot 4. which foot is securely attached to the jack-stem by means of the rivet 5 or its equivalent. or member-3 is formed integral therewith the head 6, which head is for the purpose of entering the socket 7, formed in thefoot 8.
The socket stem or member 3 is provided with the flange 9, which flange-is provided with the groove and the cross-slots 11. Around the flange 9 is located the yoke 12, to which yoke-is attached the flanged stem 13 and the flanged stem securelyclamped upon the flange 9 by suitahlc nuts 14:, by which arrangement the stem 13 is h ld in lixed relation with th socket stlan 3. W i ain the stem 13 is located the red "o iiting bar 5, which bar is provided with the shank 16 and around which shank is located the spring 17 which To the jack socket stem sprii'ig'is for the purpose of normally holding the reciprocating bar in engagement with thecross'slots H. To the outer end of the stem 13am pivotally attached the handle memhers 18, which handle members are preferably formed integral with the handle propen 19. Between the handle members 18 and the hen-- dle 19 is-loeated' the link-like portion 20, which link-like portion receives the outer end of the pull-bar 21, which pull-bar is provided with the eye or ring 22'. The pull-bar 21 is pivotally attached to the shank 16. It will be. understood that when the handle 19 is moved around a center forming the longitudinal axis of the jack-shank 1 and thesocket member 3 5 said sochet member will be rotated when the reciprocating bar 15 is engaged with'onc of the cross-slots 11, and thereby rotate the socket member 3-npon the screw-threads of i the shank 1, and when the socket member 3 is rotated in one dircctio it will move the feet 4 and 8 away from each other or, in other words, will expand the length'ofthe jack, and when the handle 19 is rotated in the opposite direction it will shorten the length of the jack by moving the feet toward each other. i
It is well understood that in ditching-jacks it is diilticult to give the handle a full revolution; but to overcome this difliculty the recip-' rocating bar 15 is provided and operated. by 30 the hand by means of the eye or ring 22. Thehandle after it has been moved as far as conven ient is released from opcrati vc contact with the socket member 3 by disengaging the reciprocating bar from one of the cross-slots, 5;
after which the handle 9 can be given a backward movement and 'the bar 15 engaged in a .-diii" rent cross-slot, after which aforward or operative movement can be given {to the handle. f
For the purpose of moving the handle out of the way after the jack proper has been adjusted to hold the planks or other structure of the ditch it is turned upon the pivotal points of the handle members 18, and in order theta 95 ivotal connection may he made between the pull-bar 21 and the shank 18 said shank and pnd za a e 'i 'otally connected together at a point near and a little to one side of the pivotal point of the handle proper, by which ar 9 main of'ashonjlder 24 and the bar15. How
rangernent the handle can be moved out of the. 5- F way Without disconnecting any of the operativei a'rts. For. the purpose of providing proper con- 5 tact'fontheheadsi and 8 said heads are pro- ;Widedvvith contact'teeth 23,- and for the purpose ofjf ornii ng a light structure and at the 'F sarhe time bringing a portion of the contact teeth-23's orne distance away from the axis of the jack'shankan'd socket members 3 the contactjendsiofgthe heads 4 and 8 may be of the m' of an ellipse, by which arrangement nieof-the hphtact-teeth are located a sufli- .cient. distance way from the axis to better. prevent anyajslippingof the heads. .;1;fl501';the parpes of holding thehead 6 in the spcketq'i thefc'ap24lis; provided, which cap is heldby suitable clamping bolts. 'The spring "{17 shouldoflconrse be confined at its ends by detailed description.
The stem @13 is 'provided ith the spaced flanges 1,3,- whicl spaced flanges are located pon bpbositeisid sfof the flange 9, by which "rangementthefstem 13iijs held against latera] displacenientf i d l eHaving fully describedniy invention, what Lclaitn as new, dsi reto secure by Letters ever, this is-s'iniply mechanical and needs no heieolnbination hfv F BEST AVAlLABLE C93 jack members adjnstably connected together, said members provided with feet, and one of said members provided with a-flange having an annular groove, cross-slots intersecting the groove, a yoke located around the flange, a
