PATENT OFFICE.
LEXV'IS B. STILLW' ELL, OF LAKEWVOOD, NEW JERSEY, AND FREDERICK R. SLATER, OF YONKERS, NEWV YORK.
ELECTRICAL-RAIL GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,238, dated March 7,1905.
Application filed September 16, 1904. Serial 110.224.,771.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, LEwIs B. STILLwELL, residing at Lakewood, county of Ocean, and State of New Jersey, and FREDERICK R. SLA- TER, residing in the city of Yonkers, in the pointed out in the claims concludingthis specitie by the bolts 5 5.
fication.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a structure, partly in elevation and partly in section, which involves our present invention. Fig. 2 shows a modified form of the same.
Similar reference-numerals indicate the same or corresponding parts in both the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings we have shown our invention in forms which are at. present preferred by us; but it will be understood that various modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention and without exceeding the scope of the concluding claims.
The following is a description of the structuresshown in the drawings: 3 is a railwaytie. 1 is an insulator-base attached to said This base is provided with the spindle 6, supporting the insulatorblock 7, and with a receptacle .8, into which the lower end of the post 9, which. is of insulating material, such as wood, is inserted, said post being held in position by the bolt 10. The sides of this post-receptacle are cut away for a portion of their depth, so as to leave flexible extensions 11 11, which can be drawn together by tightening the nut on bolt to securely hold the said post and take up looseness due to shrinkage, &c. On the upper end of post 9 is a bracket 12, fitting over the top of the post and having a horizontal extension 13, to which is attached a protector or guardplank 14E, of insulating material, such as wood. This plank is attached to the bracket 12 by means of bolts 15 15.
The contact or third rail 17 is attached to the insulated block by means of clamps 18 18,
embracing the bottom flange of the rail and fitting into cavities in the insulator-block.
19 is a bolt by means of which the clamps 18 18 are drawn together to hold the rail firmly in position.
The structureshown in Fig. 2 differs from that shown in Fig. 1 in that a single casting comprises the insulator-base, the upright 9, and the horizontal extension 13, to which the protector-plank 14: is bolted.
If desired, in addition to the protectorplank above the third rail side protectors for said rail may be employed on one or both sides. In Fig. 2 we have shown such a side protector 20 on one side, which may be attached to the uprights 9 in any suitable way. Other forms of side guards which may be adopted, if desired, are shown in an application filed by us on even date herewith bearing Serial No. 224,770. In said pendingapplication are claimed certain features shown, but not claimed herein.
It will be observed thatin both the structures above described the insulator-base and the base of the protector-carrier are formed of a single casting.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with an electric conductor, of a guard parallel therewith and insulated therefrom and an insulator for said conductor, the bases for said guard and insulator being formed of a single casting.
2. In a guard for an electric conductor, the combination with a longitudinal guard, of an insulating-post for the guard and a metal base having a yielding section whereby the base is adjusted to firmly hold the posts.
3. The combination with an electric conductor, of a guard parallel, therewith and insulatnames to this specification in the presence of ed therefrom and an insulator for said conductwo subscribing Witnesses. tor; the bases for said guard and insulator be- LEWIS B STILLWVELL ing formed of a single casting, an insulating- FREDERICK R SLATER post and a bracket with a horizontal extension attached to said post by Which bracket a guard Witnesses:
is supported. H. E. GROVE,
In testimony whereof We have signed our F. W. NEWSON.
