SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 78d,111, dated March "1', 19015.
Application filed May 13, 1904. Serial No. 207,767.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK J. LAUTNnn, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful lmprovementin Candy-Rolling Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a candy-rolling machine constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the roller and its attachment. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the standard and the bearing-block carried thereby, and Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view through the standard and bearing-block.
This invention relates to candy-rolling machines; and one of the objects thereof is to provide means whereby a batch of candy can be rolled to the desired thickness in such a manner as to exclude the air therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the candy can be rolled to a uniform thickness.
A still further object is to provide means for automatically swinging the roller to inoperative position when not in use.
Another object is to provide a compensating hearing at one end of the roller to automatically adjust theroller to the weight placed on the other end of the roller.
Other objects and advantages, as well as the novel details of construction of this invention, will be specifically set forth hereinafter, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
The reference-numeral 1 designates a slab or table upon which the batch of candy or other material is to be rolled.
2 designates a standard capable of being secured to the base or table-top l by the clamping-jaws 3 and L, one jaw carrying set-screws 5, whereby the jaws will be caused to securely engage the base in an obvious manner. The
standard 2 is provided with an elongated slot 6, constituting a guidefor the sliding l. earingblock 7, which block is provided with edge flanges 8 and 9, overlapping the edges of the slot 6. 1O designates a roller, preferably covered with canvas or some fibrous material to prevent the candy adherilig to the roller as it is passed thercover.
11 is a rotatable fastening device, illustrated as a stub-shaft mounted in the sliding bearingblock 7 and secured therein by a nut or other fastening device 12. This rotatable shaft l is connected to the roller by a gimbal-joint 155, so that the roller will be capable of swinging in any direction with respect to the shaft 1 l. A suitable tension device is provided for the block 7, and this tension device comprises a sliding element 14:, interposed between which and the block '7 is a tension-spring 15. The sliding element 14 is movable in the standard .2. The distance between the element 14: and the block 7 can be adjusted by the screw 16, projecting through the end of the standard 2 and bearing against the element M, so that the tension on the block T can be regulated. By reference to Figs. 1 and 2 it will be observed that the free end of the roller l0 is rednced, and on the reduced end is a sleeve 1?, which will permit the operator to grasp said sleeve during the rotation of the roller. The countcrbalancc-weight 18 is connected to the roller by a flexible connection 1%), which passes over one or more superposed {Milli-TVS 20, so that when pressure is relieved on the free end of the roller it will be automatically swung in an upward direction, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
in operation after the parts have been assemblcd a determined quantity of candy is placed upon the base or table .l, and the operator may exert pressure upon the end carrying the sleeve 17 and move the roller over the surface of the candy to be rolled or pressed. The movement of the roller back and forth will spread the batch to the desired thickness and at the same time exclude any air or gases commingling therewith as a result of eooking. The gimbal joint l3 will permit of any easy movement of the roller, the shaft 11 partaking of the rotary movement of said roller during the operation. As the batch is reduced in thickness the tension-spring 15 will exert a sufficient pressure upon the bearingblock 7 to maintain the roller a uniform distance above the base or table 1. After the batch has been rolled to the desired thickness the operator may release the free end thereof, when the counterbalance 18 will immediately cause the roller to be swung in an upward direction, so that the batch can be removed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a base, of a standard carried thereby, a sliding bearing-block in the standard, a rotatable shaft in the block, a roller, and agimbal-joint connection between the roller and shaft; substantially as described.
2. The combination with a standard having means of attachment to a base, asliding bearing movable in a slot in the standard, a sliding element in the slot and spaced from the sliding bearing, a spring interposed between the bearing and the sliding element, means bearing against the sliding element to compress the spring, and a roller having a free end and connected at its opposite end to the sliding bearing; substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described,the combination with a standard, of a roller connected thereto and movable in all directions, and a counterbalance-weight connected to one end of the roller and adapted to move the free end of the roller in an upward direction; substantially as described.
4. In adevice of the class described,the combination with a standard havinga vertical slot, of a vertically-moving bearing in said slot, a shaft carried by the movable bearing, and a roller connected at one end to the slot and movable in all directions; substantially as described.
5. In a device for rolling candy, a base, a single vertical standard carried thereby, a sliding bearing-block in the standard, a rotatable shaft in the block, a roller connected at one end of the shaft and free at its opposite end, the free end of said roller being movable in all directions; substantially as described.
