Letters Patent No. 77,399, dateclpflprz'l 28, 1868.
IMPROVED PACKING FOR CARRIAGE-SHAGKLES.
TO ALL WHOM I'l MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, F. BHORSE, of NewI-Iaven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Elastic Packing for Carriage-shackles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, and which said drawings constitute part of this speciiication, -and represent, in
Figure 1, a side View,
Figure 2 a top view,
Figure 3 a central section, and in Figure 4 the packing detached. j
This invention rclate's to animprovement in the construction ot' the elastic pud or packing which is ih'serted into the shackle behind the coupling, to prevent rattling, and is designed more particularly for the shaftcoupling patented to me, April 4, 1865; and to enable others to construct this improvement, I will proceed to describe the same as illustratedin the accompanying drawings.
A is the coupling, B the clip, upon whichthe ears C C are formed, through which, and the coupling, a bolt, D, passes to pivot the coupling between the ears. In the rear of the coupling a recess, a, is formed, as seen in Bg. 3, and denoted in broken lines, iig. 2. E, the packing, is formed of India rubber, or other suitable material, with a projection, F, corresponding to the recess in the shackle-and a lip,f, upon its upper edge, so as to set over the top of the shackle, as seen in the drawings, the said lip covering the joint, and giving a-inished appearance to the shackle, and also servesy to aid the projection F in holding thepacking in its place. The forward or front part ofthe packing is formed concave, to correspond to the surface of the coupling.
Owing to this construction, the projection F prevents the working of the packing, and the lipf covers the joint, sc that the packing need be only suilicicntly large to till the space between the coupling and the clip, whereas, when put in in the plain block-form of the Chapman packing, it is necessary to compress the packing to a great degree in order to secure it in its psition, lconsequently using vfrom two to three times the quantity of rubber or material used in the formation of the packing.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The packing herein described as an article of manufacture, and consisting of block E, with the projections F and lip f, as set forth. i
F. B. MORSE.
