PLATE-HOLDER KIT.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENGT J.YOUNG, of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plate-Holder Kits, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a plate-holder kit that will securely hold the glass plate or negative and can be filled or emptied without removal from the plate-holder.

A further object is to provide a kit into which a plate can be easily and quickly inserted and from which it can be as readily removed without danger of injuring the film or chipping the edges of the glass.

A further object is to provide a kit which will protect the plate from being injured by the opening and closing of the holder-slide.

A further object is to provide a kit that is capable of being nested with others to permit the use of the same holder with plates of different size, thereby adapting the camera for exposing a smaller size of plate than it was intended for. 7

Other objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description.

The invention consists generally in a plateholder kit composed of sections hinged together.

Further, the invention consists in providing a flexible back for the kit.

Further, the invention consists in providing guide-strips that protect the surface of the plate; and, further, the invention consists in the various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical perspective view of aplate-holder kit embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line a; m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 isaview corresponding to Fig. 1, showing the kit placed within a holder ready for use. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of a holder, showing the manner of inserting the plate into the kit without removing it from the holder.

In the drawings, 1 represents an ordinary glass negative or plate, and 2 a plate-holder of the usual construction having a slide 2. The

kit which I employ in connection with this holder comprises two sections 3 and 3, havin g their contiguous edges connected by hinges 6, so that one section of the kita s, for instance, the part 3is adapted to swing outwardly down over the other section to allow the convenient insertion or removal of the plate. A flexible back 7 is secured at one end to the section 3 and extends up in the rear of the section 3 and is adapted to be bent or fold ed away from said section to allow the operator to grasp the plate by the edges and remove it from the kit or insert it in a similar manner therein. This flexible back also serves to hold the plate in position in the kit while the holder is in use. The plate is also held in the kit-frame by means of strips or bars 5 and 5, that are secured to the sections 3 and 3 and have beveled overhanging edges 10, that serve as guiding-flanges, between which and the flexible back plate the glass plate is inserted. The strips 5' are preferably provided with finger-holds 4 for convenience in swinging the section 3 of the kit out away from the back to permit access to the plate. The strips 5 and 5' also serve to prevent the holder-slide 2 from contacting with the plate when the slide is inserted into the holder or removed therefrom, and the opposite side of the plate will be protected by the flexible backing.

It will be noted in connection with this invention that all metallic buttons and fastening devices for holding the plate in the kit are dispensed with, and I thereby avoid all danger of marring the film or chipping the edges of the glass, which frequently happens with kits as usually made. A portion of the kit-frame swinging away from the plate allows the photographer to grasp the edges thereof and in sert or remove the plate without the necessity of taking the kit out of the holder.

The kit may be made of any suitable material and of different sizes, according to the size of the holder, and several of the kits may be nested or placed one within the other to 9 accommodate difierent sizes of the kits to holders of the same size.

I claim as my invention- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a plateholder kit composed of sections hinged together near the middle of the kit for the purpose specified.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a plate holder kit having a flexible back secured at one end only, for the purpose specified.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a plateholder kit composed of sections hinged together, and a flexible back secured to one of said sections.

4. As a new article of manufacture, a plateholder kit comprising a frame having a flexible back secured at one end only thereto, and guiding-strips provided on the front of said frame, for the purpose specified.

5. As a new article of manufacture, a plateholder kit comprising a rectangularframe di-' vided transversely into two sections, and a flexible back secured to one of said sections and having an end adapted to be folded extending in the rear of the other section.

6. As a new article of manufacture, a plateholder kit composed of sections hinged together near the middle of the kit, and a back secured to one of said sections, for the purpose specified.

7. As a new article of manufacture, a plateholder kit having a hinged section adapted to be swungoutwardly to permit the convenient insertion or removal of a plate without re moving the kit from the holder, substantially as described.

8. As a new article of manufacture, a plateholder kit having a hinged section adapted to be swung outwardly to permit the convenient insertion or removal of the plate without removing the kit from the holder, and a flexible back interposed between the kit and holder substantially as described.
