SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,610, dated November 1, 1904. Application filed July 7, 1903. Serial No. 164,577. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAPIN WAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing-at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Leading Furrow-VVheels and Guiding Mechanism for Disk Plows, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to new and useful improvements in leading or forward furrowwheel and guiding mechanism for disk plows; and it consists in mechanism for operating the front furrow-wheel, whereby the latter is rendered adjustable vertically and horizontally in relation to the plow-frame, and in mechanism of peculiar construction, hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The objects of this invention are to provide a means whereby the leading or forward furrow-wheel of the disk plow may be positively connected to the draft-beam of the plow to turn simultaneously with the movement of the draft-beam or to positively change the line of direction of the leading furrow-wheel to conform with the direction of the line of draft of the draft-beam and to construct said connecting means so that itmay be adjusted in length to correspond with the different positions of the draft-beam and to maintain said furrowwheel in normal position when said draft-beam is in its normal position and also to providea sleeve which is pivoted in a suitable bearing of the plow-frame, provided for the purpose, in which the vertically-extending post or standard of the forward furrow-wheel is adapted to slide to elevate or lower that portion of the plow-frame, to construct such sleeve in such a way that the same may be held in position in its bearing without the aid of set-screws, keys, or such mechanical devices for retaining it in position in its bearing, thereby simplifying and cheapening its construction. I attain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar characters of reference designate like parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a disk plow. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail plan View of the guiding-lever of the leading or forward furrowwheel, its connecting-rod, and a broken-off portion of the draft-beam. v Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail View of the pivotal screw-nut of the guide-lever connecting-rod. The plow-frame l, to which the disks 2 are pivotally and adjustably secured, is mounted on the forward furrow-wheel 3, the rear furrow-wheel 4, and the land-wheel 5, and the said frame is provided with a draft-beam 6, which is pivotally secured to said frame 1 and connected by suitable mechanism to the standard or post-turning mechanism of the furrow- Wheel 3 to turn the said furrow-wheel 3 in unison With the draft-beam 6. The draft-beam 6 may be of any suitable form of construction and is pivotally secured to the frame 1. I prefer, however, to use the form of draftbeam herein illustrated in connection with this invention and which form of draft-beam forms the subject-matter of another application, the serial number of which is 164,574.
The forward or leading furrow-wheel 3 is journaled on the bent or cranked end 7 of the vertically-extending post or standard 8, which latter is preferably of a square section. The post or standard 8 is adapted to fit the longitudinally-extending square bearing of the vertically-extending sleeve 9 and is adapted to slide longitudinally therein. The sleeve 9 is externally cylindrical in form and is adapted to turn in its bearing 10, which latter bearing is provided with the arm 11, into the recess or socket of which the tongue 12 is fitted and is securely bolted in position therein by the securing-bolt 13. The sleeve 9 is provided with the retaining-collar 1 1, which bears on the upper end surface of the bearing 10 to retain said sleeve in position in its bearing. On the bottom peripheral edge of the said sleeve 9 is formed the radhilly-extending retaining-lug 15, which is provided for the purpose of retaining the said sleeve 9 in position and preventing its upward movement. A slot 16 is formed in the bearing 10(shown particularly in Figs. 8 and 11) and is of a depth and width to permit the lug 15 of the sleeve 9 to freely enter when it is required to either place the sleeve 9 in position in said bearing 10 or remove it therefrom, and the position of the said retaining-lug 15 on its sleeve 9 is such that the range of turn or swing of said sleeve is insufficient to bring the said lug 15 in position opposite or in line with the slot 16,
under which latter condition said sleeve 9 would work out of its bearing 10. Integral on the collar is of said sleeve 9 is formed the arm 17, to which is secured a forked arm composed of the lower bar 18 and the upper bar 19, each of which are bolted together and bolted to the arm 17 of said sleeve 9 by suitable securing-bolts 20. A tapped nut 21 has its reduced ends 22 litted in bores formed in the ends of the lower bar 18 and the upper bar 19, and the tapped hole 23 of the said nut is adapted to receive the threaded or screw end 2& of the connecting-rod 25. The connectingrod 25 has its end 26 bent and provided with a supporting-collar 27, which is adapted to bear on said draft-beam 6, and the said bent end 26 is adapted to lit in a bore formed at or near the free end of the draft-beam 6, and the bent end 26 of said connecting-rod is held in position in the bore of said draftbeam 6 by the supporting-collar 27 and a suitable retaining-pin or cotter, and thus as the draft-dream 6 is deflected or moved in the direction of the arrow (6 the arm 17 is similarly deflected or turned in the same direction to turn the furrow-wl'ieel 3, and thus the furro\ wheel 3 is operated in unison with the movement of the draft-beam 6. The top portion 28 of the standard 8 is of a rounded or cylindrical form to receive the top and bottom caps or washers 29, between which is situated the standard-block 30, which is bored to receive the said reduced rounded or cylindrical portion 28 of said standard and to permit said reduced rounded portion 28 of said standard 8 to turn in said standard block 30. A flanged bearing-seat 31 is formed integral on the standard-block 30 and projects on each side of the latter to form an extended flat bearing-surface, (see particularly Figs. 10 and 12,) and to said seat is secured the stem 32 of the latch-lever segment 32. A latchlever 33 is pivoted on the fulcrum-pin 3 1, secured on said foot 31 of said standardblocl; 30, and the said latch-lever is provided with a suitable latch 35, which is adapted to engage any of the notches 36 to lock said lever 33 in any desired position. To the free end of the shorter arm 36 of the latch-lever is pivotally connected the top end of the fulcrum-connecting rod 37, and the bottom end of said fulcrum-connectingrod is pivoted to the fulcrum-lug 38, formed integral on the arm 11, and thus when the lever 33 is moved downwardly or in the direction of the arrow 5 the forward portion of the frame 1 is ele vated on the standard 8, and when the said lever 33 is moved in an opposite direction the said frame 1 is consequently permitted to move downwardly.
Having thus fully described this my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to cover by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, is
1. In a disk plow, the combination with the disk-carrying frame thereof and its draftbeam pivotally connected thereto, its standard, a sleeve provided with a longitudinallyextending bore adapted to receive said standard to slide longitudinally therein and to turn with said standard, and means for retaining said standard in position relatively to said sleeve, of a bearing on said frame having a sleeve-receiving bore adapted to receive said sleeve and wherein the latter turns, a slot extending longitudinally of said bore, a lug projecting radially from the lower peripheral edge of said sleeve, a bearing-collar integral on the top end of said sleeve, a radially-extending arm formed integral on said collar of said sleeve, and means for connecting the end of said radially-extending arm with the free end of said draft-beam.
2. In adisl; plow, the combination with the disk-carrying frame thereof and its draftbeam pivotally connected thereto, its standard, a sleeve provided with a longitudinallyextending bore adapted to receive said standard to slide longitudinally therein and to turn with said standard, and means for retaining said standard in position relatively to said sleeve, of a bearing on said frame having a sleeve-receiving bore adapted to receive said sleeve and wherein the latter turns, a slot extending longitudinally of said bore, a lug projecting radially from the lower peripheral edge of said sleeve, a bearing-collar integral on the top end of said sleeve, a radially-extending arm formed integral on said collar of said sleeve, a connecting-rod connecting the free end of said radially-extending arm and the swinging end of said draft-beam and means for adjusting the length of said connecting-rod.
3. In a disk plow, the combination with the disk-carrying frame thereof and its draft- IIO beam pivotally connected thereto, its standard, a sleeve provided with a longitudinallyextending bore adapted to receive said standard to slide longitudinally therein and to turn with said standard, and means for retaining said standard in position relatively to said sleeve, of a bearing on said frame having a sleeve-receiving bore adapted to receive said sleeve and wherein the latter turns, a slot extending longitudinally of said bore, a lug projecting radially from the lower peripheral edge of said sleeve, a bearing-collar integral on the top end of said sleeve, a radially-eX tending arm having a bifurcated end, a screwnut pivotally mounted between the bifurcations of said bifurcated arm, and provided with a threaded bore, and a connecting-rod provided with a threaded end adapted to be screwed into said threaded bore and a bent end adapted to engage the swinging end of said draft-beam.
4. In a disk plow, the combination with the disk-carrying frame thereof and its draftbeam pivotally connected thereto, its standard, a sleeve provided with a longitudinallyextending bore adapted to receive said standard to slide longitudinally therein and to turn with said standard, and means for retaining said standard in position relatively to said sleeve, of a bearing on said frame having a sleeve-receiving bore adapted to receive said sleeve and wherein the latter turns, a slot extending longitudinally of said bore, a lug projecting radially from the lower peripheral edge of said sleeve, a bearing-collar integral on the top end of said sleeve, a radially-extending arm formed integral on said collar of said sleeve, upper and lower removable fork members secured on said arm, a screw-nut pivotally mounted between said fork members and provided with a threaded bore, and a connecting-rod provided with a threaded end adapted to be screwed into said threaded bore and a bent end adapted to engage the swinging end of said draft-beam.
