Description
PATENTED OCT. 18, 1904.
'3. HURLEY. PUMIGATING DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED-FEB-IB, 1903- NO MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented October 18, 1904..
JOHN HURLEY, OF LITTLEFALLS, NEIN YORK.
FUMIGATING DEVICE- SPEGIFICATIONforming art of Letters Patent No 772,359, dated October 18, 1904.
Application filed February 16, 1903. Serial No. 143,500. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HURLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Littlefa-lls, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fumigating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fumigatingdevices for disinfecting houses, rooms, &c., by means of formaldehyde gas; and it consists, essen tially, of a novel arrangement for generating this gas.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. is a sectional view of the device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of same. I
Similar letters refer to similar parts in both views.
A represents a container or shell which is preferably made of asbestos paper or other fireproof material. hollow center or core B and is further provided with air-ducts 0, located at the bottom of the shell and connecting the hollow center with the exterior of the container. Placed within this container and surrounding the hollow center is a body of polymerized formaldehyde D. Surrounding the formaldehyde is a body of combustible material E, preferably sulfur. Separating the two bodies is a partition F, provided at its upper portion with a slidable protecting-shield G. In order to facilitate the ignition of the combustible body, the same is preferably provided with a wick H.
In using the device the wick is lighted with a match, and the formaldehyde gas is generated by the heat of the combustible body transmitted through the partition. The extended portion of the partition prevents the ignition of the "formaldehyde gas. The hollow center and the air-ducts establish a draft directly in the path of the formaldehyde gas and causes same to be rapidly carried off and mixed with the surrounding atmosphere.
This shell is provided with a In order to obtain a large radiating-surface between the combustible body and the polymerized formaldehyde, the partition F is preferably made corrugated, as shown in the drawings.
I do not desire to limit myself to the particular construction as herein shown and described, as I am aware that some changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A fumigating device comprising a con tainer having a hollow center or core, airducts located at the bottom of said container and connecting the hollow core with the exterior of the container, a body of polymerized formaldehyde arranged around the hollow center of the container, a body of combustible material surrounding the said formaldehyde, an intermediate partition separating the two bodies, said partition having a slidable protecting-shield at its upper end, a wick placed within the combustible material, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. A fumigating device comprising a container having a hollow center or core, airducts located at the bottom of said container and connecting the hollow core with the exterior of the container, a body of polymerized formaldehyde arranged around the hollow center of the container, a body of combustible material surrounding the said formaldehyde, an intermediate partition separatingthe two bodies, said partition having at its upper end an extended portion forming a protectingshield, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN HURLEY.
