IMPROVEMENT IN MIIRE-BOXES.

TOALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: v l
Beit known that I, CLARK ROBINsoN, of Fox Lake, in the county of Dodge, inthe -State of Wisconsin, have invented an Improved Mitre-Box; andiI dhereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a view of the under side of the box, showing the devices for setting it for cutting dierent angles.
Figure 2, a longitudinal elevation of the same.
Figure 3, a top view. c
My invention relates to thatclass of mitre-boxes arranged to be set so as to cut angles in horizontal and vertical planes; and its nature consists in the useI of slotted standards, pivotedto blocks made-to slide on rods, put longitudinally with the box, and held together by lmeans of bara-through which rock-slots are made to receive a rod made adjustable by nuts, so that said stan'dards may be set to or from each other for cutting an angle in a vertical plane, and be inclined on the same angle with each other for cutting a bevel at the-same time, and slotted rods arranged to swing on a centre pivot, and to slide on pins put in the blocks, to which thc' standards are pivoted, and to be secured at their intersections by nuts or set-screws, and thus permit the standards to be adjusted and then held in position. l
To enable otherssliilled in the art to make and use my invention, I have marked corresponding parts with similar letters, and'will give a detailed description.
A represents a wooden bottom, Awhich supports my devices, and can be made of such width and length as will suit the size of moulding to be cut. K shows metal rods fastened at their ends to the legs H, and used for blocks D to slide on, they having holes through them for this purpose, and also pins projecting outward at their under sides, as seen at P, iig. 1, for keeping the slotted ends of the rods N in position, and are pivoted to standi ards C, g.1,at I. I
These standards can be made of wood or metal, (the former being the best,) and should have slo'ts, F, made in the parts projecting above the bottom A with rounded corners, figs. 2 and`3, in order that a saw may worli easily'when said standards are-set in dili'erent positions, as indicated at the latter gure by V V.
`The slotted parts of the standards may, however, be set in sockets in the lower parts, mwhich case slot not'rounded will answer the purpose. p l
The lower ends of the standards C are rigidly attached to cross-bars B B, fig. I, having rock-slots, as vseeli at a a, iig. 2, made through them for supporting an adjusting-rod, L and permitting said standards to be inclined, as seen at red lines b, as when a bevel is to be cut. This rod is held in place by set-screws J J in .the slots a, and at the' middle, on a slotted support, S, rigidly attached to block E, fastened to the under side of the bottom, A, the rod L also having a slot, as seen at iig. 2, through which a set-screw, U, is put and arranged to slide in the support S when the standards are being inclined, 'and to hold them in place when set-on the required angle;
Slotted rods N are pivoted to the upper part' of the support S, and are used to keep the standards Cl an equal distance apart; and toaccomplish this, slots aremade through their ends, and arranged to slide on pins,
P,g. 1, the support S operating as an axis, and has a screw-thread, on which is tnrneda nut, R, for' holding the rods in place when said standards are set.
` Operation.
AIt will bessen from this description that the standards C can bemoved toward each other, as seen by red lines V V, iig. 3, by loosening the nuts U, J J, and R, and will be firmly held in place when said screws are tightened; and, further, that they canb'e inclined, las seen by red lines by loosening the screw the rocka slots a in the bars B permitting the latter to turn. The moulding to be cut should be put on the bottom, A, and the saw in the slots F, the angle being determined by a scale or bevel, as most convenient,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is d 1. The combination of standards C, cross-bars B, and rodL, constructed to operate substantially as described.
2. The combination of rods N, support S, rod L, blocks D, and rods K, constructed to operate substantally as set forth.
CLARK ROBINSON.
