STEAM-GENERATOR- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 772,059, dated October 11, 1904 Application filed August 27, 1908- To a whom, it may concern:
Be it knownthat James N. RICE, deceased, late a citizen of Scranton, Pennsylvania, invented a new and useful Steam-.(irenerator, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to steam-generators, and more particularly to that type characterized by a boiler coil arranged in close proximity to' the point of initial combustion and in communication with a teed-boiler heater in the form ofa heating-coil arranged to be heated by the products of combustion after the latter have served iirst to heat the boilercoil.
The primary object of the invention is to provide for the introductionot' water at the hottest point of the heating-coil andto lead the water from the opposite end of said coil to the hottest point of the boiler-coil, to the attainmentof a maximum economy in the consumptionof fuel Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the water is pumped into the heating-coil from a tank into which the overflow from the coil is directed when the supply is greater than the demand, steam from the boiler being utilized as the motive agent for the pump.
Other objects subordinate to those enumerated will appear during the following description of the illustrated embodiment of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing is shown a complete steam-generating system includingthe present invention, a portion of the said system having been claimed in the concurrent application of James N. Rice, Serial No. 120,549.
\Yithin a casing 1, preferably of cylindrical form and closed at its upper end by a wall 1, is located a sectional boiler-coil 2, having a drop terminal 3 at its lower end in communication with the upper end'ot' a heating-coil 4, supported within the casing above the boilercoil. The communication between the two coils is establishedby pipes 5 and 6, between which is interposed a regulator 7 in communication with a steam-pipe 8, leading from the upper end of the boiler, which regulator constitutes no part of the present invention, but

has been fully described and claimed in the concurrent application above identified. It may be stated, however, that this regulator is operated by steam-pressure to automatically control the flow of water or lmv-pressure steam from the upper end of the heating-coil tto the lower end of the boiler-coilZ. In addition to this provision for the automatic feed of water to the boiler the pipe 6 is provided with a manually-opcrated valve 9, bymeans of which the communication between the coils 0 may be entirely severed or the maximum feed determined. The wateris supplied to the lower end of theheating-coil 4 from a'wvatertank 10, communicating through a pipe 11 with a suitable steam-pump 12, preferably of the \Vorthington duplex type, which is in turn in communication with the heating-coil through the medium of a pipe 13, leading to the lower-end thereof. The pump 12 is supplied with steam from the boiler through a 7 valve-controlled pipe 14,tapped into the steampipe 8. To facilitate the starting ot' the apparatus, water is initially pumped into the heating-coil 4: by means-of a hand-pump 15, the cylinder of which is in communication with the pipe 13 and with the branchpipe 16, led from the pipe 11 or from the tank 10 direct as desired. The overflow from the heatingcoil sis permitted to, pass back to the tank 10 a through an overflow-pipe 17 communicating 30 with the upper end of the coil 4 and provided with a safety-valve 18, which opens under'pre: determined pressure and permits the Water to flow back to the coil. c
Within the casing 1, immediately below the '8 5 boiler-coil, is located suitable heating apparatus, preferably in the forin of an oil-burner 19, of any desired construction, supplied with oil from any suitable s0urceas, for instance, an oil-tank 20through the medium of pipes 9 21 and 22, between which the regulator 7 is interposed, this regulator serving,asdescribed in the aforesaid concurrent application, to effect the automatic regulation'of both the water-feed to the boiler and the 'fuel-feed to the burner. The oil is preferably vaporized within the vaporizer 23, formed by an enlargement of the pipe 22, located directly over the burner. This particular form of heating apparatus is not an essential element of the invention, but has been described to facilitate the disclosure.
'lheheating apparatus is started in the usual manner by a pilot-light, provision for which is made by leading a valve-controlled branch pipe 24 from the pipe 21 to the interior of the casing 1. immediately adjacent to the vaporizer 2i, therein.
Briefly the operation of the generating apparatus is as follows: The valve 18 in the overflow-pipe 17 is set to open at any desired pressure, preferably somewhat higher than that the pump 12; The pilot-burner is then lighted combination with a casing entirely closed at 5 combustion rising from the heater. means for supplying water to the lower end of the heating coil, and a pipe located exterior to the easing and directly connectingthe upper end of the heating-coil with the lower end of the boiler-coil. As soon as this generation is ullicient to supply the pump 12 the latter will be put in operation to force the circulation through the feed-water heating-coil l4 and thence to the boiler-coil. the r gulator 7 serving to regulate the supply of water to the boiler and fuel to the burner in accordance with the fluctuating demand upon the apparatus.
It should be particularly noted that the arrangment of the coil 4 in superposed relation to, the coil 2, located directly above the burner 19, facilitates the heating of both coils by a single burner, and that by arranging the circulation in the manner described the water is introduced to the heating-coil 4 at the hottest point thereof, and after then circulating through the entire length of the coil is introduced to the boiler-coil at the hottest point thereof and, in fact, in immediate proximity to the point of initial combustion. 'lhis arrangement obviously results in a maximum arranged to be heated thereby, a water-tank, pipes establishing connection between the water-tank and the opposite ends of the heatingcoil. and a pipe for establishing direct comg'mumcation between one end of the heatingcoil and the lower end of the boiler-coil.

In an apparatus of the character described, the combination with a casing closed at its upper end; of a boiler-coil and a superposed t'eed-water heating-coil located within the casing above the boiler-coil, a heater located below the boiler-coil, a water-tank, means for leading water from said tank to the lower end of the'heating-coil, said means including a steam-pump, means for leading hot water or low-pressure steam .from the upper end of the heating-coil to the lower end of the boiler-coil, means for leading steam from the upper end of the boiler-coil to the pump to operate the same, an overflow-pipe establishing communication between the water-tank and the upper end of the heating-coil, and a pressure-operated valve in the overflow-pipe.
