SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,606, dated September 20, 1904.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN PFEIFFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governors, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to a combined automatic and manually actuated governor for spring-motors.
The objects of the invention are to provide a governor with a yieldingly-supported brakeblock to act upon or be acted upon by the friction-disk of such governor; also, to form the said brake-block with a tapered working end to work in a correspondingly-formed annular groove in the friction-disk; also, to provide a governor which shall be quick-acting and'in which friction is reduced to a minimum; also, to provide a governor in which a very slow speed may be had at a uniform rate. These objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a centrifugal governor having my improvement applied. Fig. 2 is a Vertical sectional elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation at right angles to 3 Fig. 1. Fig. A is a plan view.
A designates a suitable supporting-frame provided with upper and lower horizontallyextending brackets A A in verticalalinement. These brackets are in the form of split sleeves provided with clamping-screws a a, by means of which the bearing-blocks o a are adjustably but rigidly held in place.
G designates the governor of ordinary construction and mounted to slide upon the shaft 4 Cr, which bears at its ends on the bearingblocks a a. The governor G is provided with the usual governor-balls or weighted arms g g, connected in the usual manner to the shaft G and to the governor, so as to raise and lower it on the shaft. The upper end of the governor G is provided with a frictiondlsk G having in its upper face an annular groove G The walls of this groove are beveled or wedge-shaped, as shown, for a purpose to be presently described.
The vshaft G is provided with a worm or screw G of very quick pitch, with which meshes a worm-gear E on a shaft E, geared in any suitable Way to the motor or machine which is to be controlled as to its speed by the 5 5 governor.
The brake-block h, of suitable material such as wood, leather, &c.is beveled to correspond to the beveled groove G, and is car.- ried by the lower end of a tubular carrier it, preferably provided with internal threads h to securely hold the block b, and into the upper end of said carrier is screwed the lower end of the brake rod or stem h The carrier h is mounted within the lower end of a tubular plunger 7L3, reciprocating in a bearing 71, secured to the frame A, and in a hearing if in the upper bracket A to one side of the upper bearing-block a. The upper end of this tubular plunger if is slotted, as at H, and into this slot projects a pin extending through the brake rod or stem it so that the brake block and stem will rise with the tubular plunger and yet have independent vertical movement. The interior of the tubular plunger 70 is in two diameters, so that a shoulder 71 is formed, and a spiral spring la is coiled around the stem h between this shoulder it and the corresponding shoulder formed by the upper end of the carrier h. This spring A" cushions the upward movement of the brake-block, while a corresponding spring it around the exterior of the tubular plunger k cushions its downward movement and also elevates it after each depression, or, in other words, acts to keep said plunger elevated. This spring h bears at its lower end on the bearing it and at its upper end on a split collar h, clamped to the tubular plunger by a transverse screw If, on the head end of which is mounted. the antifriction-roller it H designates ashort horizontal rock-shaft mounted in hearings on the bracket A and provided with a cam H, engaging the upper side of roller 71/8. as shown, and to the lower end of the arm is secured the end of a hand-operated rod H by means of the adjustable collar It. It will be seen, therefore, that the brake may be applied or adjusted toward disk G at any time by simply pulling on the rod H, which will cause cam H to depress collar 72 and with it the tubular plunger h, which through its shoulder h and spring it will depress the carrier h and its brake-block h, which latter will enter the beveled groove Gr in the disk G Should the speed of the motor or machine become too great, the governor will automatically raise the disk G and bring its friction-groove into engagement with the brake-block h. The use of -the cushioningspring it allows of avery slow speed at a uni- Moreover, the pitch of the worm or screw G is much quicker or steeper than usual, and by it I reduce friction to a minimum and get a much quicker action.- While a worm or screw having so steep a pitch is diflicult to control, my construction of brake effects a perfect control thereof.
The collar 7L serves as a stop for the brake device when the friction-disk is moved up automatically by the governor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the governorshaft and its disk, of a spring-controlled plunger, a spring-controlled brake-carrier mounted on the plunger to move independently thereof, and manually-actuated means acting on the plunger to move it any desired distance toward the disk; substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the governor-shaft and its disk, of a spring-controlled plunger, a spring-controlled brake-carrier mounted on the plunger to move independently thereof, a cam acting on the plunger to move it any desired distance toward the disk, and means for actuating the cam; substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a governor-shaft and its friction-disk provided in one face with a beveled annular groove, of a spring-controlled plunger, an antifriction-roll thereon, a spring-pressed brake-carrier carried by the said plunger, and movable independently thereof, a wedge-shaped brake-shoe on its carrier to engage said annular groove, a cam having a curved edge engaging said antifriction-roll, and means for operating the cam;
substantially as described. I
4. In a governor, the combination with the in which said carrier is slidingly mounted and means for operating the plunger.
5. In a governor, a brake mechanism comprising suitable bearings, a tubular plunger mounted thereon, means for ra1s1ng and lowering the plungena brake-block carrier mounted 5 in the tubular plunger and a spring interposed between the plunger and carrier to cushion the movement of the carrier.
6. In a governor, a brake mechanism comprising a tubular plunger shouldered on the inner side, a brake-carrier mounted in the plunger and provided with a stem, a pin-and slot connection between the stem and plunger, and a spring on the stem between said shoulder and carrier.
7. In a governor, a brake mechanism comprising a tubular internally-shouldered plunger, a spring for retracting the plunger, means for projecting the plunger, a brakecarrier in the plunger provided with a stem and having independent movement in the plunger, and a spring on the stem between the carrier and the plunger-shoulder.
8. In a governor, a brake mechanism comprising, a tubular internally-shouldered plunger, a spring for retracting the plunger, a cam for projecting the plunger, means for operating the cam, a brake-carrier in the plunger provided with a stem having a pin-andslot connection with said plunger and a spring on the stem between the plunger-shoulder and the brake-carrier.
9. In a governor, the combination with the governor-shaft and the governor-actuated friction-disk slidingthereon, of abrake mechanism comprising a tubular plunger having an internal shoulder, a collar on the plunger, a roller on the collar, a spring bearing on the collar to raise the plunger, a rock-shaft, a cam on the rock-shaft engaging said roller on said collar, an operating-rod connected with the rock-shaft, a brake-block carrier within the tubular plunger, a brake-block and a stem, there being a pin-and-slot connection between the stem, and plunger, and a spring on the stem between said shoulder and the carrier.
