SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,089, dated September 13, 1904. Application filed July 25, 1904. Serial No. 217,994. (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HARVEY A. MoYER, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dump-VVagons, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in dump-wagons, in which the dump-box is provided with laterally-swinging bottom doors meeting at substantially the longitudinal center of the box and have their meeting edges overlapping one upon the other. 7
My present invention relates more particularly to the means for controlling the operation of these doors; and my object is to control the action of both doors by a single cable passing under one of the doors and having its ends rendering over suitable sheaves on the doors and front and rear ends of the box, the front end of the cable being attached to a horizontal rotary drum, while the rear end is anchored to the rear end of one of the doors opposite to that under whichthe cable passes.
Another object which results directly from the use of a single chain connected in the manner hereinafter described is to enable one of the doors to be closed slightly in advance of the other, so as to insure the overlapping of one upon the other without liabil ity of the meeting ends abutting against each other, and thereby preventing positive closing of the doors.
Other objects and uses will appear in the i ratchet-wheel to rotate the drum in the same following description.
In the drawmgs, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a dump-box embodying the features of my invention, portions of the rear end of one of the side walls being broken away to 1 show the rear chain connection with the door. Fig. 2 is a front end view of the parts seen in Fig. 1, the bearing for the drum-shaft in one of the sides being shown in section and the front end of the opposite sides being broken away, the swinging doors, however, in this view being shown in their open position instead of closed, as seen in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear end view of the mechanism seen in Fig. 1, the doors being closed and the rear ends of the sides being shown in section. Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic perspective view of the winding-drum and chain and the sheave over which said chain passes. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the bracket on the front end of the box for supporting the sheaves on said front end and also for supporting one end of the shaft of the winding-drum.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The dump-box shown comprises front, rear, and side walls 1, 2, and 3 and dump bottom doors 4 and 5, which are hinged at 6 to the lower edges of the sides of the box and meet near the longitudinal center of the box when closed. A shaft 8 is journaled in suitable bearings 9 and 10 upon the front end of the box and is provided with a drum 11, which is located at one side of the longitudinal center of the box in a substantially horizontal position. One end of the shaft 8 extends through and beyond the bearing 9 to the outer side of the box and is provided with a ratchet-wheel 12. A bracket 13 is secured to the side of the box adjacent to the ratchet-wheel 12 and projects upwardly therefrom, and to this bracket is pivoted at 1A a lever 15, carrying two pawls 16 and 17, which are pivoted to said lever 15 at opposite sides of the pivot 14 and substantially equal distance therefrom. The pawl 16 overlies the pawl 17, and the latter pawl, 17,
is connected by a link 18 to a hand-lever 19,
which is also pivoted at 2 0 to the upper end of the lever 15 It is apparent from this description that both pawls operate upon the direction as the lever is moved in opposite directions, so that when winding the cable upon the drum the motion is practically continuous, as described in a pending application, Serial No. 208,331, filed May 17, 1904, of Thomas Faulder.
The bearing 10 forms a part of a bracket 21, which is secured to the front end wall 1, and in this bracket is journaled a rotary sheave 22, which is located above and in substantially the same vertical plane as the meeting edges of the doors 4 and 5. Another bracket, 23, is centrally secured to the rear end wall 2, and in this bracket is journaled a second sheave 24:, which is also centrally arranged above and in substantially the same vertical plane as the meeting edges of the doors, so that the axes of the sheaves 22 and 24: are alined with each other substantially midway between the sides of the box. The bracket 21 has a laterallyextending arm 25, in which is journaled a buEer-sheave 26, this latter sheave being located directly beneath the drum 11 and at one side of the sheave 22 and directly over the front end of the door 4. It now appears that one of the doors, as 4:, is directly under the drum, while the other door, 5, is arranged at one end of the drum.
Journaled in a suitable bracket 7 on the front end of the door 4 near its meeting edge is a sheave 27, having its axis parallel with said meeting edge, while the opposite or rear end of this door is provided with an anchor 28, fixed thereto. Secured to the opposite ends of the door 5 near its longitudinal meeting edge are separate brackets 30, in which are journaled separate sheaves 31, having their axes extending at right angles to the meeting edge of said door 5. A cable or chain 32 has one end attached at 33 to one end of the drum 11 farthest from the meeting edges of the door, said chain being extended downwardly and around the sheave 26 and then under the sheave 7 on the front end of the door i, from which it extends upwardly over the sheave 22 and then downwardly under the sheave 81 on the front end of the door 5 and thence rearwardly under said door and also under the sheave at the rear end of the door 5, after which it is brought upwardly over the sheave 24: and downwardly and has its rear end secured to the anchor 28. It is thus seen that the intermediate portion of the chain or cable 32 passes lengthwise of and under only one of the doors, while the opposite ends of said chain or cable extend transversely of the line of draft from said door over the sheaves 22 and 24: and to the other door, the front end only of the cable being connected to the drum 11.
It will be observed that owing to the direct connection of the drum 11 with the door L this door will be closed first, and therefore in advance of the other door, 5, which latter door is then brought to its closed position by the continued rotation of the drum, and being of slightly-greaterWidth transversely than the other door it overlaps, or rather underlaps, upon the bottom face of the adjacent edge of the door 4:.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is
1. In a dump-wagon, the combination with a dump-box having laterally-swinging bottom doors meeting near the longitudinal center of the box, a horizontal drum rotatably mounted on the front end of the box, means to rotate the drum, a single sheave centrally mounted on each of the front and rear ends of the box above and in substantially the same vertical plane as the meeting edges of the doors,sheaves on the opposite ends of one of the ,doors, a sheave on the front end of the other door, and a single continuous cable having one end attached to the drum and its other end passed around said sheavesand under the door having two sheaves and anchored to the rear end of the door having the single sheave.
2. In a dumpwagon, the combination with a dump-box having laterally-swinging bottom doors meeting near the longitudinal center of the box, a sheave on each end of the box in substantially the'same vertical plane as the meeting edges of the bottom doors, a horizontal drum rotatably mounted on the front end of the box at one side of and above the meeting edges of the doors, means to rotate the drum, a sheave on the front end of the'door underlying the drum, a sheave on each end of v the opposite door, a cable having one end attached to the drum and extending downwardly over the sheave on the underlying door, and then upwardly over the sheave on the front end of the box, and then downwardly and rear- Wardly under the opposite door and its sheaves, and then upwardly over the sheave on the rear end of the box and its rear end anchored to the rear end of the door which underlies the drum.
3. In a dump-wagon, the combination with laterally-swinging bottom doors of a dumpbox, a rotary drum located above and at one side of the meeting edges of the doors, and over the front end of one of the doors, sheaves on the ends of the opposite door, a cable extending lengthwise under the latter door and its sheaves and having its front end attached to the drum and its rear end anchored to the rear end of the first-named door, and sheaves on the front and rear ends of the box for supporting portions of the cable above the plane 'H.
