UNITED STATES REINHOLD JOHN ERNEST METZENTHIN, OF WANGANUI, NEW ZEALAND.
Patented .Ianuary 10, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
SHAVE FOR THE HEELS AND FOREPARTS OF BOOTS OR SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 779,486, dated January 10, 1905.
Application filed May 31, 1904.
T0 at whom, it flea/y concern.-
Be it known that I, REINHOLD JOHN ERNEs'r METZENTHIN, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Druids Chambers, Wanganui, in the Colony of New Zealand, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shaves for the Heels and Foreparts of Boots or Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in shaves for the heels and foreparts of boots and shoes, the object being to provide a tool of this class which can be used with safety upon the heel or forepart of a boot or shoe without fear of cutting the upper no matter how much trodden over the said upper may be. An advantage also offered by the improved shave is that two knives of different shapes are fitted to it instead of one only.
Consequently the user only requires just half the number of these tools that he would of those at present in use. a
The angle-knife hereinbefore referred to can be used on the forepartsnamely, the soles as well as the heels, thus rendering a separate forepart-plane unnecessary.
Knives of various curves can be used with this tool, according to the shape of the heel, Whereas at present a different .tool must be used with each shape.
In carrying my invention into effect I proceed in or in about the following manner, making reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan and Fig. 2 a side view of the tool with the knives and gages omitted.
Figs. 3 and 4 are views of each side with the .knives fitted, and Fig. 5 is a plan of the tool shaped on each edge somewhat flatter than Serial No. 210,586. (ModeL) the curves of the knives to be used, and a convenient shape is that shown in the drawings at f and 9.
Above the part f is fastened the knife it, that above referred to as the angle-knife and having a very decided angle at the end i, which is attached to f by a screw at the extremity of this end being inserted in a groove is. The other end of it is screwed down to f by the screw Z. Above g is the other knife, on, one end being screwed at n to the top of g and the other to a bevel 0, provided on the handle. For each knife is provided a gage for adjusting the depth to which the knife shall cut, that for the knife hbeing shown at p and that for the knife m at q. Each gage has two legs a", in which are open-ended slots .9, through which are passed the screws 2,, by loosening and retightening which and shifting the gages the latter can be fastened at the required distance from the edge of the knife. The knives are sharpened on both edges, so that the respective gages can be used on either side of the web, according as the user prefers to push or draw the knife when Working.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A heel-shave having two handles connected by a web curved on opposite edges; a suitably-curved knife removably attached to one of the said curved edges and another suitablycurved knife removably attached to the other of the said curved edges; gages for adjusting the cut of the knives, each of the said gages having two legs in each of which is an openended slot through which is passed a headed screw, all substantially as hereinbefore described. 1
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
REINHOLD JOHN ERNEST METZENTHIN.
