BOOK-COVER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 77 9,161, dated January 3, 1905.
Application filed February 17, 1904. Serial No. 193,945.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HOLDEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Book-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to removable coverings used for the protection of books, and is intended to provide a cover which can be very easily and expeditiously applied to or removed from books, while at the same time making the same cover suitable for a very wide range in the sizes of the books upon which it may be used.
To this end my invention comprises a bookcover so formed and constructed that it may be available for books varying widely in width and also in height, the cover, moreover, being so constructed as to afford reinforcing-tongues of varying dimensions adapted when in use to extend across the back of the book to strengthen the cover at the points of greatest strain.
By the employment of the principles of this invention it is possible to adapt one size of blank to all ordinary or common sizes of books without being obliged to carry or provide a number of different sizes of blanks to accommodate the varying dimensions of different books.
lVhile the structure described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings is believed to be most desirable, the right is reserved to make such changes in the general form thereof as to adapt it to any book without departing fro the scope of the invention.
The drawing consists of one figure showing a plan view of the inside of a book-cover constructed according to this invention.
As shown in the drawing, the blank consists of a rectangular body portion a, which extends from the edge of one cover across the back of the book and to the edge of the opposite cover, covering the same completely. At each end of said body portion the end flaps 6 are located, extending the full height of said body. Centrally of the upper and lower edges of the blank are two lines of converging scorings or perforations 0 that portion of the blank between these scored lines constituting a tongue d, adapted to be folded in between the protective cover and the upper and lower edges of the back of the book, the angle of convergence of these lines being such as to adapt the cover to books of Varying thickness. Furthermore, the convergence of these scored lines 0 results in the provision of two angular tabs 6, (shown in dotted lines in the infolded position of the tongue,) which when the tongue is folded in, as described, are bound in between the cover and the side of the book in such manner as to constitute a lock for the tongue and which also form a reinforcement beneath the remaining perforations to strengthen the cover at- Located at each side of the tongues (Z on the upper and lower edges of the blank are the top and bottom flaps f, preferably highest toward the center of the blank and curving downward more or less toward the extremities thereof, substantially in the manner shown in the drawing. These top flaps terminate substantially at either end of the rectangular body portion (a Along the outer edges of these flaps and extending from the outer extremities thereof inward gum is applied, as at g, on the inner surface of the blank.
To use this blank to cover a book, which in its open position would be represented by the line it, the book would be laid in the center of the blank and the tongues d separated therefrom by tearing the blank along the scored lines 0 as far down as the upper edge of the book, then folding the outer end of the tongues in between the cover and the blank. The two end flaps b will then be folded in and the top flaps f folded in over the top and bottom edges of the cover and gummed to the end flaps 6. To adapt the blank, however, to be formed into a covering for a book of smaller dimensionsas, for example, one which would be represented in outline by the lines j--I pro vide scoring-lines whereby the endwise dimensions of the blank may be sufiiciently reduced for this purpose, said perforations or scoring-lines being indicated by is for the end flaps and by m for the ends of the top and bottom flaps. To permit the formation of a new end flap, whose outer extremity is indicated by the lines 70, the blank is scored, as at 0, between the ends'ot' these lines and the end of the lines m. "bus to reduce the dimensions of the blank to a book of a size indicated by the lines 1' it is only necessary to tear off from each end thereof that portion lying outside of the lines k and m, the scored lines 0- being torn down in this case to meet the line j.
While but one series of lines in and 0 has been shown in the drawings, thus adapting the blank to be used on two sizes of books only, it is obvious that other scoring-lines may be applied to the blank, adapting it to be used on as many sizes of books as would be practicable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. A blank for a covering of the character described, comprising a body portion and infolding top, bottom, and end portions, the latter having lines of scoring or the like extending transversely thereof, whereby portions of the ends can be detached therefrom to shorten the blank.
2. A blank for a covering of the character described, comprising a substantially rectangular body, top and bottom flaps located each side of the transverse center line of the body, there being converging lines of scoring from the edge of each flap toward said center line, whereby a triangular-shaped tongue may be formed by tearing the blank along said lines of scoring; there being also one or more lines of scoring extending across the blank near each end thereof, whereby the end wise dimensions of the blank may be shortened by detachingportions of one or both ends thereof.
3. A blank for a covering of the character described, comprising a body portion, infold- ,ing top, bottom, and end flaps, the latter being of the end of the blank may be removed to shorten the same, said scored lines extending through a gummed portion of the blank on the top and bottom edges thereof.
