APPLICATION FILED Nov. 6, 1903.

PATENT QEETCE.
ELORENZ PLASSMANN, OF DORSTEELD, GERMANY.
DOCUMENT-BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 779,000, dated January 3, 1905.
Application tiled November 6, 1903. Serial No. 180,012.
To @ZZ whom it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, ELORENZ PLAssMANN, a subject of the King of Prussia, Emperor of Germany, residing at Dorstfeld, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Document-Binders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in document-binders for wire-binding papers of all kinds; and the objects of my improvement are- First, to provideY a tool or apparatus for making' the holes for the metal binding-clips in the back or fold of the document, not by the clip itself, but by perforators or needles provided for the purpose. .The perforators also serve at the same time to draw the clips through the holes which they have pierced without its being possible for the leaves of the document to become disarranged.
Second, to afford facilities for the proper adjustment of the needles, so that by means of one and the same apparatus binding-clips of various lengths of back and Shank may be employed, just as the size and thickness of the documents may demand.
I attain these objects by the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Eigure l is a perspective view of the apparatus; Eig. 2, avertical longitudinal section of the same, partly in elevation, the handle being broken away to save space in the drawing. Fig. .3 shows one of the hollow perforatng-needles, and Eig. 4 illustrates the method of employing the apparatus.
|Ihe apparatus consists of a handle a, to which is secured the block o. holes or passages CZ are provided at certain distances apart, serving to receive the hollow perforating-needles c. The latter consist of fine tubular pins having a sharp point at one end. These perforators c are retained in the holes l of the part 7) by means of set-screws e, provided at either end of the block b.
In the particular construction of binder here shown the part Z1 is provided with four holes d, located at certain distances apart, so that the apparatus can be employed for three In the latter,
different sizes of clip. The two central holes are employed for thesmallest clip, the two outer ones for the largest clip, and one central and one outer hole for a medium-sized clip. The part Z1 is also tapped transversely to receive the set-screws e.
The method of using the apparatus is as follows: The perforators o are inserted in those holes Z of thebart 6 which correspond to the size of the clip to be employed. The binder is then taken in the right hand in such manner that the sharp ends of the perforators point upward and the fold or bend of the document is pierced with the said two perforators from within outward. The Shanks of the Wire clip a', Fig. 4, are then pushed into the hollow perforators with the left hand, as shown in Fig. 4. The apparatus is now Withdrawn, the clip a: being at the same time pushed with the left hand up to the back of the document. The document is now opened, so that the back of the clip m finds support on the desk or table, and the perforators c are wholly Withdrawn. The Shanks of the clip have thus been introduced through the material of 'the document without any trouble. The back of a pocket-knife or other suitable instrument is then held above the upturned ends of the clip, while the shanks are pressed over with the thumb of the right hand. In the event of eXtra strong clips being employed the ends of the clips after they have been bent over should be pressed down with the handle of a knife or in other suitable manner, so that the Shanks lie close to the fold of the paper, and thus cannot cause injury to the hand.
In binding very thick documents or the like it is advisable instead of the hollow needles o to iirst use solid needles to perforate the paper in well-known manner, the hollow needles being only employed subsequently in the described way for guiding the clip Shanks through the perforations in the paper. The
means of U-shaped clips, the combination of In testimony whereoflhave signed my name a handle part, ci, I), provided with vertical to this specification in the presence of two suhloores, d, With tWo hollow needles, c, adapted soribing Witnesses.
for the insertion of the Shanks of a clip to FLORENZ PLASSMANN. 5 guide the clip and fitting i'nto said bores, and Witnesses: y
means for retaining the needles in the bores, AUGUST WINTER,
substantially as described. MAX SIELING.
