PATENT OEEICE.
ENVELOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 776,712, dated December 6, 1904.
Application nai March 24, 1904.
To all whom it Wto/zj concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES WILLIAM WIL- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Linden, in the county of Cleveland, Oklahoma Territory, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Envelope; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in envelops, and more particularly in the means for opening the same.
The object of my invention is to provide an envelop or like container with a simple, inexpensive, and effective means for quickly and easily opening the same.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a rear elevation of an envelop, illustrating one application of my invention thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of the same with parts in section to more clearly illustrate the manner in which the opening cord or wire is applied to one of the flaps of the envelop. Fig. 3 is an elevation of ka portion of an envelop, showing one end or side of the same partially opened by my improved opening means.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 denotes an envelop or similar container consisting of a front 2 and a back formed of end flaps 3 and side iiaps 4c, and 5 denotes my improved opening device in the form of a thread, cord, wire, or any other suitable strip 0r string of flexible material. Said cord may be applied to any of the flaps at either the ends or sides of the envelop and is applied by looping it around said flap, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. It will be seen that the central portion 6 of the cord is placed along the outside of the iiap, and the end portions 7 are folded in opposite directions upon the inside of the same,
Serial No. 199,788. (No model.)
the extreme ends 8 of said end portions 7 projecting slightly outside of opposite corners of the envelop, as shown, in order to permit them to be readily grasped. Said ends 8 are preferably knotted, as shown, to permit them to be more easily grasped by the lingers when it is desired to open the envelop and to prcvent them from slippingl within the envelop.
The operation of the invention will be readily seen upon reference to Fig'. 3 of the drawings. I/Vhen it is desired to open the envelop, both ends 8 are grasped and pulled, so that the portions 7 will slip through the envelop, drawing the central portion 6 after them and causing it to cut the lliap from each of the ends of the latter, as shown in said Fig. 3. It will be seen that the device is simple in construction, comparatively inexpensive to produce, and very effective in operation.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An envelop having a iiap, and an opening cord or wire on the outer side of the iap at the point where it joins the envelop, said cord having its end portions reversely bent to engage the inner side of the flap at said point, the ends of the cord or wire extending in opposite directions, passing through opposite corners of the envelop and terminating near said corners, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribingwitnesses.
CHARLES WILLIAM WILSON.
