JOHN PHINIS HEY, OF GASCILLA, MISSISSIPPI.
CULTEH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 776,135, dated November 29, 1904.
Application filed May 25, 190%. Serial No. 209;?!31- (N0 model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN PI-IINIs HEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at (Jascilla, in the county of Tallahatchie and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Colters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to means of adjusting the colter to and from the plowpoint and for holding it in adjusted position.
As hereinafter more fully described, it comprises two eyebolts located, respectively, over and under the plow-beam, and the colter-stocl extends up through the eyes of these bolts and through a mortise in the plow-beam, so that it may be adjusted vertically therein and also swing in a vertical plane to give adjustment to and from the shovel.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail in section. Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the plow-beam is indicated at 6 and the shovel stock or standard at 7, secured to the rear end of the beam in the usual manner. The colter is indicated at 8, and its stock 9 extends through a double-beveled mortise 10 in the beam, in which mortise it is adjustable vertically, and the bevel permits it to be swung in a vertical plane to and from the shovel. For the sake of strength and to prevent the colter-stock from cutting back into the wood of the beam a bolt 11 extends crosswise through the beam at the back edge of the tends. The tails of the bolts extend through holes in the plow-standard 7, behind which they have nuts 16 for adjustment. The grassrod is indicated at 17, extending through the beam and the plow-standard in the usual manner. The slot 15 in the lower bolt is of considerable length to allow the passage thercthrough of the grass-rod.
In use the bolts 14: and 15 when tightened strain the colter-stocl against the rear side of the mortise and hold the colter as adjusted. To vary the depth of the colter, the bolts are loosened, and the colter may be then raised or lowered to the desired extent. To vary its pitch, one bolt is slackened and the other is loosened, which will swing the colter-stoek accordingly. The eye 14% of the upper bolt works under the head 17 of the grass-rod, so that it is prevented from lifting or sliding up on the colter-stock.
W hat 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination with a plow-standard, and a beam having a tapered mortise therethro ugh, ofbolts having elongated eyes, on the upper and under sides of the beam, which bolts extend through the plow-standard and are adjustable lengthwise along the beam, a colter the stock of which extends through the eyes and the mortise, and in which it is adjustable vertically to vary the depth and longitudinally to vary its pitch, and a grass-rod connecting the beam and plow-stock and extending through the eyes of the bolt, and having a head engaging over the upper bolt, to prevent slip thereof on the colter-stock.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN lPHlNlS HEY.
