Be it known that I, FRANK J. ROTH, of' Schenectady, in ,the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stuffing-Box Packing; unal I hereby dechire that the following is u true, full, and exact description of the sume, reference being had to the accompanying drawingmnnd to the lettersof reference marked thereon.

In the drawings annexed, which maken part of this specification- Figure 1 repnresents a diametrical section of .stuIing-hox and packing.

.Figure 2 is nu end view of packing, with cap removed.

The object of my mode ofpacking is to have steam to act upon the rear 'end of the follower in order to-pack the piston-rod. LZ d', the peeking-rings, are euch cut into three'sections, (see fig. 1,) and must be made ofhard composition. ling c, which presses against the pecking d', is to be cut only once.

C represents o conical-shaped. follower, which, with the pnclring-ring d', must he turned somewhat smaller than the here of stuffing-box a, solos to allow the packing to adjust itself` to the vibration of thepiston-rod.

S designates a. spring which is used to keep the pueking-rings d cl' :1nd conical follower c in Contact with inner surface of cnp b. Thejoints between follower e und d', und between follower c and ringe, must be made perfectly steam-tight.- When the depth of stalling-box will not admit of as long packing es is here described, the

.packing-ring fl can be dispensed with.

I represents the cnp, which is to be secured up to n. st eamjoin't against smiling-box a. The back of stuflingbox a will have n. bore somewhat larger than the here in cnpb, so that the piston-rod may ploy freely through it. In order to keep the pecking free from dirt, I employ either o cock, g, screwed into the cap b, or otherwise n connnection-pipe, to be userlin locomotives, or horizontal engines. This pipe will be connected with'thc cylinder-cock next to the stuffing-box, so that, when open, steam rushes through the stuffing-box and carries off any impurities than; may have lodged there.

I do not claim this vibration of the packing as my invention, but heretofore the vibration has been of no 'practical use, as it only requires a. short time to'jill it up with grease or dirt, and thus impede the motion ofthe said rod; but,

What I do claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is The employment of cock y, or its equivalent, when used in connection with stuing-box a, substantially as herein set forth and described.
