Be it known that I, ROBERT BI'JHLER, a citichine and one or more mills or crushing-rolls.
The cutting-machine or pug-mill is located directly below the crushing roll or rolls, so that all the machines can be worked by a common vertical shaft carrying the rolls as well as the mixing and pressing blades of the pugmill. By means of this arrangement the upward pressure exerted upon the vertical shaft by reason of the action of the clay-cutting machine upon the clay fed into it is more or less equalized by the downward pressure exercised by the weight of the runner-shaft, so that the bearings of the latter can be much simplified.
One construction of machinery according to my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a vertical section of the plant, having two crushing-mills; and Fig. 2, a similar view showing the pug-mill mounted directly below one of the crushing-mills.

Below the bed-plate it of the lower mill and likewise concentric with the shaft 9 is the collector-pan Z, to the base of which is bolted the pug-mill casing m, the bottom of which presents a foot-step bearing n for the shaft IVithin the pan Z operate the rotating scrapers o, secured to the shaft 9, which also carries the pugging and pressing blades 1), in-
suitable well-known construction.
The clay from the crushing-rolls descend through their grates into the pan Z, Where it is swept by the scrapers 0 into the pug-mill casing 02,- the blades 1) forcing it down to the exit 9, from which it issues as a plastic bar and is divided by the cutting device 8.
The blades 1) in pugging the clay exert a lifting action on the shaft 9, which is more or less equalized by the downward pressure due to the weight of the runner-shaft, so that the step 12 and other bearings of the shaft may be of the simplest description.
Although in Fig. 1 of the drawings I have shown only a combination of a cutting-machine p with two crushing-mills it k c' and a collector-pan Z, it will be obvious that the cutting-machine can be equally well used with a single crushingmill of like description or with two crushing-mills without the collectorpan. In the latter case the pug-mill m 19 should be bolted immediately to the centrallyperforatedbed-plate it of the lower crushingmill it it" a", as illustrated by Fig. 2. A scraper 0 is provided on the runner-shaft for the purpose of conducting the clay to the pug-mill, as indicated at 0 in Fig. 1.
T/Vhatever arrangement is adopted the cutting-machine constitutes the actual molding apparatus, and works up the material fed to it directly from the crushing-mills, delivering it ready for being cut into bricks or the like.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a clay-working machine in'combination, a vertical revoluble shaft, a plurality of superposed bed-plates concentric with said shaft, the lowermost bed-plate having a central aperture and a concentric imperforate track, the other bed-plates having a perforated or grated circular track in line with one another and with said imperforate track, an edge runner for each of said bed-plates, conmill casing below the lower bed-plate, means to transfer the kneaded clay from said lower bed-plate to the pug-mill casing, pug-mill blades carried by the shaft and a forming discharge-nozzle at the foot of said casing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
